I need the most annoying toy for a 5 year old

My sister and I are in a war of annoying toys, she bought my 3 year old a set of mini bagpipes.. I need the most annoying but equally awesome for the child at 5 years old. I want something that she’s going to despise and he’s going to love. Budget about £100. I’m not unreasonable but she was to buy mine bloody bagpipes!!

I’m still traumatised by this fucking bear my dd had a baby and she’s 13!!!

I can still hear the song

“I’m a friendly light up bear
ill teach you
one two three
a sleepy hungry happy bear
hey come and hug me”

You are VERY unreasonable to put this song back in my head, my first child is now 18 and this delight ruined my life for five years cause he's autistic and it was precious nanas first present to him 🫠🙃

A drum kit
A detective kit that includes black fingerprint powder
A young scientist kit with experiments
A noisy fake gun
A mini piano

Can someone explain the bunchems hate please? From a quick google it looks reasonably innocuous.

aquestionforya · 12/06/2026 07:58

My sister got my son a drum kit. V annoying
my mum bought him an outdoor trampoline (that I had to build) - a different level of annoying !

A cousin got my DC and toddler electric guitar. I thought about returning the favour with a toddler drum kit, but ended up getting something else.

I got my nephew one too. It lives at his grandparents house which is where I gave it to him. It’s not that bad actually.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/06/2026 08:16

My aunt and uncle got my nephew a sort of dinosaur toy that moved and made noises. Sent to my mum’s house and I saved it and gave it to a local family with young kids. SIL hates noisy, loud noises toys. They’re all kept at my parents house or mine if they’re presents.

I was going to get DNephew a hamster for his birthday (end of this month, he’ll be 8) which he’d love and he’s the right age for it, but then they recently got a mouse in the house and SIL is terrified of them so no hamster this year. I did get an LED robot thing which DNephew picked out but it looked so complex to make when it arrived (would end up with DB making it, DNephew I’m sure couldn’t manage it) that it went straight back and I got Lego mech and Warhammer. The prices some of those Lego sets go for though. £200-£300! 😱

DC had a clock that chimed animal noises on the hour. That was annoying. It was quite loud and I'd get the fright of my life when it went off. Eventually I took it off the wall and disabled the sound.

My DM has an RSPB clock which does bird sounds on the hour. Freaks you out a bit if you hear an owl out of the blue. She gifts them to friends. Prob less annoying than your clock though.

As a nanny who’s about to leave a job where they’ve treated her like rubbish and wants to buy the 3yo a gift to go with their siblings drum set she’s bought them, where does one buy mini bagpipes?

I've heard of them getting stuck in hair

Yep, like this.

Apparently it’s common with them and an American mom is suing the makers for this reason.

igelkott2026 · 12/06/2026 12:01

I saw the title and was going to suggest a recorder - and then I saw that you were trying to outdo bagpipes!😂

A recorder filled with glitter (obviously I'm joking, but can you imagine the noise & the mess!!).
Peppa Pig Musical Band set (although depends of if the child actually likes Peppa).
Minions & Monsters Fart blaster

Five is still maybe a bit young but next year get them Pokémon cards, a book listing all the pokemon and a substantial folder to keep the cards in so that they can catch em all (at great ongoing expense).

AImportantMermaid · 12/06/2026 17:39

What about a kids techno DJ set?

My DNephew has all this. He’s 7 (almost 8). There’s an animal like a Pikachu from Australia that I was tempted to buy him as a pet but thought better of it. He gets all things Pokémon from me though. Got him LE special cards recently £14!

Kazoo, about 50p!

....leaving you approx £99.50 to do something really annoying like spend it on yourself misses point

Edited due to terrible maths

How about a box of kazoos 😅

Ultravox · 12/06/2026 18:22

You need a sound effects machine - one that does fart noises as part of it. And perhaps a voice changing megaphone?
