To not support England?!

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

The England fans will have to beHave when they lose. USA police are armed, and carry pepper spray and tasers…

I was born in England but to Scottish parents, you know who I'm supporting 🤣 As my Uncle always said (Scottish but living in London) "There's no Scot as Scottish as one who left"

Perfectly put 😃

Mine are hazel. I just have Irish/Scottish looks but I think we may have some Spanish in us (black Irish?) as my eldest son has black, curly hair. Could also be Italian mind. 😊

My boys are the polar opposites of each other, one dark curly hair, brown eyes and the other straight blonde hair and blue eyes but they weirdly still look like each other.

One thing they both have inherited is really thick hair. You should see my husband if he goes two weeks without a haircut. He's like a member of the hair bear bunch. 😂

Possibly! I remember reading that some people from the Spanish armada got washed up on the Scottish coastline and intermingled with the locals.

Your boys sound lovely. 😊

Lol. That sounds funny! I can well imagine that. 😁

You are entitled to support who you like! Perhaps you should tell your work colleagues what they should wear or where they should go on holiday and see how they like it 😀

You live in England but support any team but England and you have told your colleagues this. Unsurprisingly they are irritated. Nowhere else in the world would this be OK.

If you feel such disdain for England, why do you live here?

TheZanyScroller · 12/06/2026 20:43

An interesting post.

There are plenty of folk who flock to England and can't stand England. I find that weird tbh and a wind up. There are enough folk who flock here to use and abuse our country who have the audacity to get offended by our England flag. You move here and don't support England is one of many users in this country. You do you. Don't rub our noses in it.

Yes, it's rude to live in a country and announce to your colleagues that you support any country but the one you live in. You would only get away with that if you lived in a middle class bubble. Most ordinary English people would take a dim view.

They both keep saying “ one thing we never have to worry about is going bald” 🤣

Hellohelga · 12/06/2026 20:57

Support whoever you like, but you sound a bit obnoxious.

Didimum · 12/06/2026 20:57

I supported Spain last time. My husband was aghast.

MirrorMirror1247 · 12/06/2026 21:06

I'm Scottish and had a summer job in Lincolnshire during the 2006 World Cup, so I was living down there too. I proudly wore a Scotland Tshirt in amongst all the English flags. It didn't matter that Scotland hadn't qualified, hell would have frozen over before I supported England!

5MinuteArgument · 12/06/2026 21:09

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 17:07

I can root for them from here, the matches are in the US … also, the weather…

But why live in a country you feel such disdain for? It makes no sense.

Jamesblonde2 · 12/06/2026 21:12

Why are you choosing to support a team you KNOW are not going to win? (Sorry to any Scots on here - not the OP).

You’re odd. But then again you sound as if you like to be controversial. For some reason.

No-one likes a spoilsport.

A country, believe it or not, is defined by many things. I would say, could be wrong, that not one of them is their football team.

If that was the other way round I bet you would have felt more under threat. Certainly more dangerous.

I think historians probably know what they are talking about. I read the dark hair is more a throwback to the people who lived in Ireland before the Celts.

She then seems to be very puzzled about why she has no friends here.

Yes, but if you announce to your colleagues that you support any team but England, while continuing to live here, you are making a statement about how you feel about the country. That's why it went down badly with the OP's colleagues.

StormGazing · 12/06/2026 21:33

🙄 …. Biscuit

borage13 · 12/06/2026 21:34

Yanbu. Support who you like, and enjoy the tournament. It’s only sport.

MrBernardCheeseman · 12/06/2026 21:35

You sound like you are deliberately trying to wind people up. Behave. Nobody cares.

How disappointing.
I thought this was an interesting question about supporting one's country when it has bad governmental policies. Imagine my disappointment to find it's only about sports.
I think the world would be better off if people supported a team on the basis of the team itself - or maybe better if there were no sports. To support one's home team mindlessly is just as silly as refusing to eat French food, or read Russian novels, or listen to American music.
