To not support England?!

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

Yes you are absolutely right, the Rangers fans particularly are known to be violent and unsocial and have caused trouble when travelling, you can spot them with their union jacks and many support England too. Celtic have been welcomed and praised the world over although of course there are factions that cause trouble but it's much less prevalent with them, and probably more specific to the old firm. I say this as a fan of neither and someone who hates the secterian divide in Glasgow. It's a good point you make though the strange difference between club football and the national team, it is very different. I am now wondering myself if it's because the hardcore rangers and celtic don't support the national team in favour of England and Ireland. Who knows

Oh and the way you've worded it "I'd NEVER support English sport teams EVER" it does come across as a bit, I don't know, pointed?

Being anti-England in everything is considered acceotable, try and apply that to a country further East and see what the response would be. I won't be watching any England matches or even looking at the score until well after the final whistle, that's how much I would like to see them win again!

I think that's different though, OPs heritage team didn't qualify so they've just arbitrarily picked one, most people as a second choice would pick the country they've made their home, or would not actively support any team and just enjoy the tournament generally. I suspect there's also something in the way this choice was communicated

I would totally pick the country I was living in... Unless of course that country is England! I'd never be allowed home again.

It was ages ago, but I’ve never watched anything with Lorraine Kelly* ever since she said on (IIRC) Loose Women that she’d be supporting Germany in a big England vs. Germany match.
*ghastly woman anyway, IMO of course….

And this surprised you??

🤣🤣🤣🤣

The delusion is adorable.

My children are season ticket holder to be fair but no Irish connection whatsoever, but I grew up in a very orange family so seen all sides, but I'm wondering if likes of the more extreme from the green brigade and whatever ranger equivalent don't have much interest in the Scotland team and that's what keeps the tartan army extremely sociable and friendly and fairly trouble free, we were so complimented and admired in Germany two years ago honestly but I'll find out soon if Boston and Miami is the same. Maybe it's because we're mostly there for the party and can't really be too ambitious haha

You could be right. I have both sides in my family too. Makes it interesting! But our best friends are RFC season ticket holders and they also support Scotland.

The tartan army are getting a lot of coverage in US press and all of it positive…

Support who you want but seems deliberately inflammatory to announce you never support England to a group of England fans.

Exactly this

Tbh if I had to pick between supporting Scotland and England, I’d pick Scotland although i don’t live there and I don’t have to. I doubt the Scots are going very far though, sadly.

I don’t have much faith that England will be reliving their 1966 victory either.

Im just hoping the games done bring the same good dose of racist fans’ comments to light when Black players fail to meet expectations. It’s boring.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/06/2026 12:31

Yanbu I work with a lot of people from all different countries. They are supporting their own countries.

You're one lucky person with that heritage!

Thank you! My dad's mum was Italian, and his dad was Welsh. My mum's dad's family originated in Scotland and just moved further south over the years (his parents were from Sunderland and he was born in Oxford.) My mum's mum's side of the family are from Oxfordshire, and there's apparently a Spanish gypsy woman in that side of the family somewhere as well. I'm a very mixed bag. 😅

Historian0111101000 · 12/06/2026 12:43

I always support my own country. If they don't make it to the World Cup, I support England.

Mostly because I'm not passionate enough about football for it to matter that much to me. I also enjoy how the whole country comes together during major tournaments. Having drinks with my English friends and cheering together is something I really enjoy.

I also don't really see the point of choosing a random country that I have even less of a connection to than England.

But if that sense of shared excitement isn't important to you, then just support whoever you want.

Great though 😁

It is! I once had a woman from Malta ask me if I was Spanish, and when I explained I was part Italian she said she thought I looked Mediterranean, which I took as a compliment. (One of my favourite bands ever is from Italy.)

DS has inherited my dad's curly hair as well, although his is brown. He was born with black curly hair and I was really excited he was going to have hair like my dad's, but then that fell out and grew back brown. Oh well, he's still gorgeous. 🥰 His eyes are the same colour as mine, although they were black when he was born and then turned grey before going hazel.

Mine are hazel. I just have Irish/Scottish looks but I think we may have some Spanish in us (black Irish?) as my eldest son has black, curly hair. Could also be Italian mind. 😊

My boys are the polar opposites of each other, one dark curly hair, brown eyes and the other straight blonde hair and blue eyes but they weirdly still look like each other.

One thing they both have inherited is really thick hair. You should see my husband if he goes two weeks without a haircut. He's like a member of the hair bear bunch. 😂

Hollybollyhughes · 12/06/2026 18:15

I'm English but live in Wales, racist generally and insular people, sadly. I never understand how people support English clubs, their players etc. yet are so hostile to the English team. You don't have to support any team but don't be so antagonist against England. They're in the World Cup after all.

Single50something · 12/06/2026 19:02

Support who you like. Can't believe how many people have said you should support where you live. English and yet we support another country we have links with. I dont feel it makes me any less English.. and not sure with the way England is at the moment that I am proud to be so :(

Your colleagues are weird. I lived in Oz and didn’t support Australia in the ashes or any sporting tournaments (well if they were playing against England). I had one colleague who found it weird but so what.

And not a single Irish person I know living in England supports England!
