To not support England?!

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

Hard agree. It's just another rage bait post.

Generally there is an affinity between the Irish and the Scots.

Is there? I heard an Irish man calling for ‘Scottish ancestry’ Northern Irish people to be deported back to Scotland on LBC a few days ago.

Feetballislife · 12/06/2026 09:41

Saw a lovely video of some Scots supporters in Boston ( at an Irish pub) singing their hearts out, wearing kilts etc and it all seemed very good humored. The locals seem to be enjoying the whole football thing… so far anyways!

I’m English and I don’t expect support from Irish people at all, I expect them to support Ireland Confused even then I don’t care if they support someone else entirely, or nobody.

But this thread wasn’t ’AIBU to expect everyone to support England’, it was ‘AIBU to make a song and dance of supporting anyone BUT England as they’re AWFUL’ (pretty much). It gets very boring after a while.

We're not allowed cheer for England at football or any other sporting event. That's the whole point. It's written clearly in the 1916 Proclamation of The Irish Republic. It would be unpatriotic at best, possibly treason.

They were playing pipes at 6am. Not sure that is appreciated by neighbours.

God no support who you want. No English I know expect you to support them and suspect that is a small minority. Most Irish aren't like OP anyway who seems to spend most of her waking hours hating the English (previous threads).

Possibly shouldn't support Manchester Utd then...🤔😛

What the English expect is of little concern to us.

Now this is just silly. I suggest you watch Brave heart, it's all explained very clearly there.

Some England fans. I am sure some Scotland fans are also aggressive and drunk and violent. Manchester and others probably don't want the Old Firm down here very often.

Edited

Yes you are absolutely right, the Rangers fans particularly are known to be violent and unsocial and have caused trouble when travelling, you can spot them with their union jacks and many support England too. Celtic have been welcomed and praised the world over although of course there are factions that cause trouble but it's much less prevalent with them, and probably more specific to the old firm. I say this as a fan of neither and someone who hates the secterian divide in Glasgow. It's a good point you make though the strange difference between club football and the national team, it is very different. I am now wondering myself if it's because the hardcore rangers and celtic don't support the national team in favour of England and Ireland. Who knows

Yes no idea why. Asking for Scottish heritage people to be deported is madness!

TunnocksOrDeath · 12/06/2026 10:11

It’s the assumption that anyone “should” care one way or the other that pisses me off.
My last employer lets people off work to watch England in the football World Cup, but got arsy about me doing flexi-time (still full hours) to actually compete at some high-level events in my own sport.

Oh behave. It's perfectly natural to respond to people speaking to you about England that you don't support England.

I don't support England. I've always followed my heritage team because of my parent supporting them. I don't feel like I have to pretend otherwise. If people are so fucking fragile that they're offended by someone not supporting the same football team as them then they need help.

I think that's different though, OPs heritage team didn't qualify so they've just arbitrarily picked one, most people as a second choice would pick the country they've made their home, or would not actively support any team and just enjoy the tournament generally. I suspect there's also something in the way this choice was communicated

Maybe it was her afternoon nap as it was 6am in the US.

It was ages ago, but I’ve never watched anything with Lorraine Kelly* ever since she said on (IIRC) Loose Women that she’d be supporting Germany in a big England vs. Germany match.
*ghastly woman anyway, IMO of course….
