To not support England?!

Feetballislife · 11/06/2026 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

You can support who you like. Thankfully, we don't live in a police state.

@Goditsmemargaret- you’re Irish yourself, aren’t you? 😂😂

JackGrealishsCalves · 11/06/2026 21:45

Honestly love, no one gives a shit who you pretend to support.
Bet you can't even name 4 players from your "adopted" team. Yay, go you

Norman T was the MP bombed in the Brighton bomb attacks that disabled his wife. Back in the 80s

Your pseudo lighthearted and jokey posts aren’t doing a good job of disguising your very clear bigotry.
Even if England don’t do well, they’ll be doing better than Italy 😹

I sure am! (I may have joined in with the taunting of DH too. )

Support who you like obviously but you live here so don’t know why you’d choose to support a different country you have tenuous links to…

I’m half French so always torn between the two and don’t mind who wins out of them.

Why would English people want Scots to support England? Of course they're not going to. But the op isn't Scottish.

I can't speculate why, but they frequently do. It's regularly featured in the media around big tournaments that it's ridiculous the Scots don't support England. Then we had the year of the anyone but England T Shirts and that all kicked off. Our fans are very different to English fans, the Tartan army are beloved, fun, respectful but obviously do drink and party, the English fans are a bit edgy, there's a fear they'll kick off if they don't win or that they might cause trouble and be rowdy - they always seem to expect to win and have the chops to do it but then fluff it, there's an arrogance and and edge to some sectors of the English fan base that really is off-putting. I know many of us Tartan Army are prepping to get the hell out of Boston before the English arrive, if it was the Welsh or the Irish I am certain we'd be factoring in a joint party.

JacknDiane · 12/06/2026 07:38

Do what you want its not a big deal is it.

VivienneDelacroix · 12/06/2026 07:38

I support France for men's football and England for the women's. No one has to support England at all. I find it bizarre that people are saying you should.

You don't have to name players to support a team. How odd to think you do.

Some England fans. I am sure some Scotland fans are also aggressive and drunk and violent. Manchester and others probably don't want the Old Firm down here very often.

DontBuyAnotherBook · 12/06/2026 08:11

Why also presume it will be violent when the English fans arrive in Boston? Most are fine.

Yes, I'm sure all the Rangers supporters among the adorable cuddly tartan army would be really looking forward to partying with Irish fans!

Seriously, there are bad elements among all fan bases. The idea that England supporters are uniquely violent is decades out of date. England, unlike other countries, has made great efforts to tackle bad behaviour among fans, and it's mostly been successful.

Generally there is an affinity between the Irish and the Scots.

In my experience the vast majority of Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh people get on perfectly fine.

There may indeed be an 'affinity' between Irish and Scots. But there is also lingering anti-Irish sentiment among certain football fan bases. Far worse than in any English club.

But you are English yes? I often hear my English rellies, colleagues, friends, acquaintances declare confidently there is NO issue with England and Ireland and never was.

There certainly was in my lifetime.

However there is very very little these days, the tiniest bit... Literally not cheering for England in sports is the only bit left and I've never seen it be anything but good natured.

drammmalllammma · 12/06/2026 09:10

We are English but we as a family support Wales for rugby because my Mum was Welsh aand England for football. I will also be supporting group D because that my family sweepstake group 😀

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/06/2026 09:18

If anyone actually asked me, I’d just say I don’t support any of them, I’m not interested in football.
But I’d still be quietly pleased if I heard that England had won a match, and ditto Scotland and Wales - as long as it wasn’t against England…

I’m reminded of the bloke with a T shirt that said ‘I SUPPORT NEW ZEALAND - AND WHOEVER’S PLAYING AUSTRALIA’. 😂

Yeah it's the exact same vibe - I don't know why a English people get so offended or expect support from Irish people. We can work with you, befriend you, love you, sleep with you, marry you, have kids with you... But don't expect us to cheer for you in sports.

I’m English and I don’t expect support from Irish people at all, I expect them to support Ireland Confused even then I don’t care if they support someone else entirely, or nobody.

But this thread wasn’t ’AIBU to expect everyone to support England’, it was ‘AIBU to make a song and dance of supporting anyone BUT England as they’re AWFUL’ (pretty much). It gets very boring after a while.
