Is it too late to turn the uk around?

Is it too far gone now?

I wouldn't be taking any moral guidance from the likes of Jimmy Carr - the tax dodging so called comedian. He's part of the problem. What he did might have been legal at the time but was most definitely immoral.

And nobody is afraid of British culture. That's just more Great Replacement Conspiracy bollocks. The issue is that too many people suffer from toxic nostalgia and are always looking back to the mythical 'good old days' whilst refusing to see anything positive in what has changed in their lifetime.

The way it was before

Before when?
Give us a date to work with OP.

I'm old. Happy to compare the UK today with another day in the last 60 years

It'll only be a bit of anecdata, but can't see you're going to get, or want, much from this thread.

WaryCrow · Yesterday 21:38

I refuse to believe that it's too far gone as I'm stuck here, and anyway I'm not sure you can ever say that change is not possible. Of course it is possible. Gladstone, David Lloyd George and Clement Attlee were all part of one hell of a change away from rotten boroughs in the first place, so we even have road maps.

The question is do we have any leaders who have any motivation or anyone here who cares to help our people instead of the intercontinental jetset of billionaires.

Yes, I live in another European country and think the same

So you don’t even live here?

Where are you getting your information from?

Who is taking moral guidance from him? I saw this post about multiculturalism and saw another post about grief and bereavement and agreed and found comfort( on the bereavement post) with what he said. You don’t get to take the moral high ground and police what other people have found that has resonated and helped them.

and pah haha, your second paragraph I beg to differ

DogAnxiety · Yesterday 21:52

It’s definitely not too late to turn it around, Reform had its 15 minutes of fame in the local elections, it’s basically peaked too soon and people
dont seriously think Reform would
make a good government. Reform is now losing traction and engagement despite intense engagement farming, and Restore isn’t mopping up the racist vote so much as splitting it. The thing is, Reform politics rely on people being thick as mince, truly prejudiced, and very unkind. And that, mercifully, only really
applies to a small proportion of the UK population.

Oh, there's always the same thing underlying the nostalgia fetish. No, OP, you won't ever be 25 again. Sorry. But you getting old hasn't actually made the whole world miserable and scary, I'm sorry it feels that way to you.

BMW58 · Yesterday 21:55

Are you very young OP?

When you've lived as long as I have you'll know that ALL countries rise and decline, over and over again.

At the moment the UK is not much worse or better than anywhere in Europe. Every country is struggling post Covid.

Out of interest and for transparency what country in Europe are YOU living in?

JazzyJelly · Yesterday 21:56

No, continental drift has gone too far, there's no hope of walking to France again.

dottiehens · Yesterday 21:58

30 years ago it was much better. You could see progress happening and now we are going downhill. There are too many people here. Rentals probably are the same rubbish but much more expensive than 30 years ago. Food was not so good but now terrible again. Places cut corners for profit. Now there is not hope for younger people to buy.

nomoreforks · Yesterday 22:00

Whoever is in government needs to get the economy growing otherwise we are in big trouble. There are too many people on benefits (including pensions) and it is unsustainable without a growth in the economy. I am in my 50s and i am not counting on my state pension because I am not sure it will be there when I retire. I think most people are unaware of how much trouble we are in financially if we continue as we are. It is scary. My kids all talk about leaving the UK and so do my friends' kids. We need our young people to stay, We need to change now. Another thing I worry about is food security when climate change properly gets going. We need to prioritise growing our own food as we will not be able to rely on imports in a world with food shortages.

RollOnSunshine · Yesterday 22:03

Sadly i think so yes. Probably about ten years ago..

Too many people taking out
Not enough people putting in
Not enough money going into education and broadly not enough support for teachers
Too much crime and not enough deterrents or punishments
Many areas in cities are no go areas or at least borderline shitholes
The shitshow that is immigration
The economy is in a bad place

Quashsquash · Yesterday 20:58

Sorry. Euro here. You fucked up beyond all conceivable fuck-ups almost exactly ten years ago, and it is really hard to see how you could ever fix it.

Probably this.

BurntBroccoli · Yesterday 20:51

No - it’s not. Just in the mind of bigots.

Just need to read Mail readers comment section.
Britain has it's issues but it's not broken.

SingtotheCat · Yesterday 22:21

I saw two piles of human shit in disused shop doorways in Bristol City centre today.
It’s not a measure of things, but looking around, trying to access the NHS or any government help, seeing the lack of opportunities and everything for young people… looking really bad to me. I have not seen everything as shit as this right now in my 50-odd years.
I feel for my adult kids, racists are emboldened to come together and march in the streets, form a political party which many have voted for and we’ve allowed billionaires to exist, to be celebrated while people live in tents and broken-down caravans.

Turn the clock back to pre 1997 before Blair started the monumental fuck up that we now have to live with. Stop kowtowing to certain groups. Put the armed forces on the streets to do what the police cant/wont do.
Round up all the illegals and kick them out.
Thats a start

What can’t / won’t the police do?

Dont you read the news?

That’s not really an answer to my question.

Specifically what do you want the army to do that the police currently can’t or won’t do?

DogAnxiety · Yesterday 22:42

These “patriots” who all live in other countries. I mean, you couldn’t make it up, could you?

Anyone commenting on the economy and it not growing really needs to improve their analytical skills. UK growth is on par with the eurozone, and above Canada and Japan. This isn’t a uniquely “Uk going down the pan” situation. Honestly, it boggles me how people are so unconcerned with actual facts.

RedVanYellowVan · Yesterday 22:48

How it was before?

Like when half the population died of bubonic plague?

Or when Vikings were invading, raping and pillaging as they went?

Or when children were sent up chimneys to clean them?

Yeah, the good old days weren't they?

So during the last Labour government in the 1990s?
