AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

I take your point. 10 years ago I would have easily eaten out and had takeaway in the same weekend and thought nothing of it but I'm actually thinking you had quite a decadent weekend!

Just shows you how our expectations have changed in a decade.

I kinda understand you, OP.
I was chatting to someone yesterday that I'm just going to come home and hide under my duvet for the rest of the month. I'm also switching my phone off, because the phone and outside equals £££.

I popped into the petrol station to top up my tank (I needed less than 1/2 tank) - £47.
Stopped at Costa with my daughter- £20.
Popped into Tesco to get some water - £23.

All in less than 3 hours.

You spent £23 on water?????
Don’t you have a tap?

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 10:58

OP are you one of those Mumsnetters who thinks that a £100k salary 'is not that much', lives in 'a modest 4 bed house' but claims you are frugal because your car is 'just a 15 YO Golf' that you hardly ever have to use because you live in walking distance from an area that is affluent enough to have a Gail's and has all the other amenities you need?

It's easily done, particularly if you were tired and/or bored.

I went to the local Spar to get some milk. Ended up with crisps, nuts, cream, fruit, two magazines... twenty odd quid for some milk.

I was hungry and just thought 'oh, while I'm out in the car, save me popping in another day...' I had to apologise to the man behind the till and tell him that I do usually eat normal meals, because I bought such a pile of crap.

This is one of the weirdest posts (on a very weird thread). You apologised to the cashier for your shopping? He won't give a shit what people buy.

tealandteal · Yesterday 11:02

It doesn’t sound like you went nowhere and did nothing though? You went out several times it looks like, and went out to eat and got takeaway in so it will add up.

I also didn’t go more than a mile from home but love quite rurally so those things you have described would involve driving quite far. I did spend a few quid on plant food and sweets for the children.

I used to be a cashier and people did it to me all the time! And yes, we did used to sometimes think 'blimey, that's a lot of crap for one person'.

So I know how it feels from both sides of the counter.

Tiptow · Yesterday 11:06

I had a chilled weekend. I went for long walks , Saturday and Sunday. Drank coffee at home. Ate at home. Watched movies at home. £50 Sainsburys delivery on Friday…. Fish N chip supper from that, plus Sundays roast chicken dinner, and the toast and eggs, bought a £8 M&S pad Thai though, as well, so slightly wild. Actually had a lovely weekend.

But you don't know how many people it's for or over what timescale it's going to be used. They could be sharing amongst a family or taking it with them to see a group of friends. It could also take them weeks to get through.

I also don't understand the 'twenty odd quid for some milk' posts. If you bought £20 of groceries including milk, then surely you'll spend less in future, because you've got all the other things as well as the milk.

Sorry if people are really that interested, but I promise you it's very dull.

And I am going to round up for ease.

Saturday morning £4 coffee while youngest two had swimming club.
Saturday ordered Tesco's £180 for Sunday (can't really count that)
Saturday £30 at Boots on shower gels, toothpaste etc.
Saturday Butchers £45 on chicken breasts and burgers
Saturday evening Chinese takeaway for 2 adults and 3 kids £70

Sunday £10 on coffee x2 with husband
Sunday £5 3 Famous Five Books from charity shop
Sunday £4 Sourdough from Gails
Sunday Brunch hubby only at Bills £50
Too good to go Rodeo donuts £8
Chopping Boards TK Max £15

I told you it was dull!

Out of curiosity how was the rodeo tgtg? Reviews are mixed

Of course 100k salary is a lot, it puts you in the top 5%.

Terrible, look fantastic - taste awful.

Krispy Kreme (which are also on too good to go) much better at half the price.

I never understand why people buy shampoos etc in boots. It's £2-4 more expensive than other shops, go to savers, b&m, home bargains, supermarkets etc. I would say the reason you spend so much is because you spend willy nilly, you could have easily got them in your tesco order.

I think she means she went in for water and came out with all sorts of other stuff as well.

Buscobel · Yesterday 11:14

You can spend a fortune simply being at home, if it’s when bills leave your account.

I spent over £200 one day last week. I went to the dentist, food shopping and the hairdresser. The hairdresser was the cheapest.

BillieWiper · Yesterday 11:15

I suppose you could spend 600 on crack and then having nothing to show for it a couple of hours later?!

TheWineoftheChicken · Yesterday 11:15

This thread is so weird. It reminds me of when DH said a few weeks ago ‘how have we spent so much money this week?’ and I replied ‘because we bought stuff. That’s what happens when you buy stuff… you spend money 🤷🏻‍♀️’.

So you don’t really enjoy eating out or getting a take away, of coffees and treats? Why not spend your money on things that bring you joy rather than find dull?
Why are you so exhausted you can’t cook for youself and make coffees?

LasersInTheJungle · Yesterday 11:17

So you had a weekend shopping and eating out.

Yes, those things cost money, sadly HmmGrin

TheWineoftheChicken · Yesterday 11:17

coulditbeme2323 · Yesterday 10:49

I did - but my point was nothing of consequence.

My only real point is that it's super easy to spend on a weekend you stay within a few minutes of home, and don't do anything of any real note.

Well yes, of course it is, if you fritter money away.

Food. Swimming. Books.
How is that "nothing of consequence" ?
Your view on life is very odd.

We just had a really busy week as a family, so needed a weekend doing not much.

Swimming wasn't included, swimming club is a monthly DD.

On what planet is this "going nowhere and doing nothing" because that's a long list of places you went to and things you bought
