AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

I'm saying, as I've said previously, that if I can do it better and cheaper at home, then I don't buy it out.

So coffee, we make excellently at home for very little cost, we don't go out for it. Whippy ice cream, we enjoy but can't make at home, so we will buy that out for a treat on a day out, and we'll enjoy it.

I can make a fantastic pizza, a great pasta sauce and lasagne. We almost always find cakes bought out don't match what I make at home. But I haven't yet cracked a curry so well that we wouldn't go out for one.

If we won't enjoy it as much as at home, no we don't spend money on it. I'm not sure why that's so hard to understand. But maybe that's because you seem to have to spend money or be out of the house to be happy?

Sorry I was just clarifying.

I think I get it - if you can do at home to a better standard you wont pay for it out, but if it's something you can't do at home you are happy to pay for it. Yes that makes sense.

Are there ever any conveiance exceptions? I suppose I am thinking airports, motoray service stations, theme parks etc?

If we know we're travelling over meal times etc, we either plan to be somewhere that we would be happy to spend money on, or we take food with us.

Picnics are a lot of fun, and they don't cost the earth. Plus, you know the kids are gonna eat it and not be grouchy cos they're hungry and didn't like the stuff at the services.

Theme parks we take a picnic and use the budget we have to buy the treats like ice creams.

Yeah I get that - and at most UK theme parks the food is awful anyway.

And we can probably actually agree that the food at theme parks is ALWAYS over priced.

I mean yes it's a captive market isn't it.

I like any captive market, Airport, theme park, service station, it makes commercial sense to charge higher prices.

So yes would agree those places are over priced.

The gist is that we have much better things to spend money on to make our lives what we want them to be than food or drink we don't enjoy as much as if we'd made it ourselves for half the price. So we plan accordingly to make sure we don't need to pay for that.

I hear what you are saying, and it does make sense when you look at it at purely on quality. I mean why for example pay our for a fry up if you can make a better one at home?

I use fry up as an example, because I make a great one. But there is always the convenience factor as well. I mean lets say we have a 9am flight - I am not waking up at 4am to cook everybody a fry up - and am happy to pay for one that will probably be lesser quality at the airport.

That’s why I was banging on about making smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for a tired weekend brunch! Ordering it in, alongside, say, almond croissants and strawberries and even pre mixed latte like califia, etc, to be delivered from Sainsburys on a Saturday morning is going to allow you not to cook, ( much) , and to have something actually nice without finding your funds drained on mediocrity.
For me it works because I prefer to sit in my home chilling out, than in a public place.

In our family if there's a 9am flight there is not a chance anyone could stomach more than a slice of toast before it, so it's not an issue we have.

Dinner time would be harder, but there's usually options of having a big lunch at home then taking a picnic and snacks or something.

I suppose what I am saying is that when I buy food/drink out of home I am looking at two things. 1) Am I going to enjoy it and 2) Is it providing me convenience.

I am happy to pay for convenience, but still only up to a point.

We used to go to Lego land a couple of times a week, and the food was that bad I refused to buy anything there - not even coffee.

Even if it's convenient, it has to be enjoyable enough that I won't resent using the money on it.

I agree, and Legoland wasn't even enjoyable. In fact it was utterly dreadful.

You should have used your money on actual Lego sets then......😂

Lego land didn't see any change out of us, the yearly passes were about £75 a year and I am not kidding I think we went twice a week during term time.

You could have got several sets for that amount and stayed home to build them so you don't accidentally spend £££ on other stuff 🙂

If you read the exchanges, you would see it's specifically talking about the food offering at Legoland.

The park itself I have some wonderful memories.

Ok.
Apologies.
My mistake.
(still think buying actual Lego is better....😁)

Lego is great, I hope they never grow out of it.

I used to love LL in term time when they were little. Pick them up from school at 3.30 and we could parked up and in the park by 3.45. Used to just walk on and off rides with no queue.

Used to get a couple of hours in the park before dinner, but then Merlin got tight and made it a 5pm close and it wasn't really worth it anymore.

I genuinely can’t understand your logic. How you were doing nothing when you did a lot? I usually buy takeaway coffee once a week. You had coffee twice and out with DH for a brunch - for me and DH it would be equal one month of events.
Im not saying that my way is right or yours but you can’t say that you did “nothing”. It doesn’t matter if everything happened not far from your house.
