AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

If you bought a loaf couldn't you have just had brunch at home?

Don't worry, her Husband can afford it! This poster is not short of a few quid, and likes people to know about it.

FlorenceAndTheVagine · Yesterday 10:37

YABU for buying bread from Gail’s, might as well have just chipped a brick off your (no doubt massive) house.

0/10 for rage-baiting stealth boasting too 🥱

Lomonald · Yesterday 10:37

We spent about £250 over the weekend but we did the food shop and had lunch out and I bought a couple of birthday cards, your doing nothing is someone else's doing something.

I wonder if it is the same poster who forgot they had 35k in a forgotten bank account 🤔

Well you've been shopping and our to eat Op, that's hardly doing nothing

DeedlessIndeed · Yesterday 10:39

I think you need to reframe what you consider "doing nothing".

Growing up, eating out was a rare treat you'd look forward to. Getting a random coffee out wasn't really a thing, but if you did go for a tea/coffee and cake it was, again a nice treat.

If you start to consciously appreciate the little things, you wont save money, but you might not feel as crap spending £500 on "nothing".

Exactly, I spent about £60 on Saturday on a nice day out to a historical city on train fare, lunch, couple of bits from shops and a tea for the train home. Not free but affordable and a nice/memorable day out to somewhere I'd never been before.

I would not be surprised. I thankfully missed that particular thread.

op you’re hard work and you can’t count.

Sorry if being vague - multi tasking.

I guess my point is we literally haven't left anywhere that's not walking distance from our house, haven't done anything fancy, and it's amazing how quickly the coffee's etc add up.

Surely you have coffee in your house? If your ordering in coffees it’s not rocket science it will cost money.

Sorry if people are really that interested, but I promise you it's very dull.

And I am going to round up for ease.

Saturday morning £4 coffee while youngest two had swimming club.
Saturday ordered Tesco's £180 for Sunday (can't really count that)
Saturday £30 at Boots on shower gels, toothpaste etc.
Saturday Butchers £45 on chicken breasts and burgers
Saturday evening Chinese takeaway for 2 adults and 3 kids £70

Sunday £10 on coffee x2 with husband
Sunday £5 3 Famous Five Books from charity shop
Sunday £4 Sourdough from Gails
Sunday Brunch hubby only at Bills £50
Too good to go Rodeo donuts £8
Chopping Boards TK Max £15

I told you it was dull!

That’s not doing nothing then. Yabu.

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 10:44

I kinda understand you, OP.
I was chatting to someone yesterday that I'm just going to come home and hide under my duvet for the rest of the month. I'm also switching my phone off, because the phone and outside equals £££.

I popped into the petrol station to top up my tank (I needed less than 1/2 tank) - £47.
Stopped at Costa with my daughter- £20.
Popped into Tesco to get some water - £23.

All in less than 3 hours.

MiddleAgedDread · Yesterday 10:45

So you didn't "do nothing", the kids went swimming, you had coffee, went shopping quite a few times, had a takeaway and went out for more coffee and brunch. It might be within a mile of your house but it's not exactly "doing nothing". try staying in all weekend next weekend.

Well…. I earn well, and I would do all that over a month!!
You did loads, so spent loads. You barely ate at home, not even boiled a kettle!
It’s nice that you’re doing your bit to support the economy.
You go girl…… just don’t moan!

Are they that bad? I drove past one last week and thought, at some point I'll go see what the fuss is all about.

Nobody is taking it too literally you went out and bought stuff!

FudgeFudy · Yesterday 10:47

Threads shouldn't be this much like hard work. But it is bonkers - I spent over a grand this weekend just gone doing nothing. Well nothing except for all the trips to the shops, booking a holiday, going out to eat several times, going to the casino, going to the pub, and chucking the occasional twenty pound note out of my window. Where does the money go?!?!

shinypen · Yesterday 10:48

I agree, time flies when you're having fun?!
I do think phones sap up a lot of energy you would usually spend being bored. So maybe boredom is a natural part of resting up.

Lomonald · Yesterday 10:47

I did - but my point was nothing of consequence.

My only real point is that it's super easy to spend on a weekend you stay within a few minutes of home, and don't do anything of any real note.

Coffee bad, cakes bad, mostly over priced for the quality - but their seeded sourdough is lovely.

I don’t think I’ve ever spent £500-£600 over a weekend. Even when we could afford to go away, we’d spend about half of that. In some ways I think I’m happier with less disposable income - it’s made me a much more conscious consumer and less wasteful in general.

It seems that spending money is how you like to use your leisure time, so not surprising that it adds up. Keep doing it if you like it and can afford it. Stop doing it if you can't.

This weekend DS and I played with his toys, watched a couple of TV shows/movies at home, parkrun, beach. Spent about a tenner in the arcade.

BringBackCatsEyes · Yesterday 10:52

I presume all you “oh I don’t know where it all went” folk can afford the frivolous spending.
You have £, you spent it.

See that's where your going wrong £50 notes fly out of the window better.
