AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

Well that's a bit sad and hardly the standard of life most people are aiming for, so not sure what your point is. Money is no good once you're dead

It's not a bit sad to not have coffees out. It's just not a priority for everyone. Why would you think that the standard of life most people are aiming for is to have coffee out? There much more to life than that.

What's the point in telling someone they're a bit sad because they don't buy overpriced coffee? To make them feel less than?

PrueRamsay · 10/06/2026 07:17

Your idea of doing nothing/nothing much at all is very much at odds with the average family and how they spend money on a typical weekend. That’s why you are getting the responses you clearly weren’t expecting.

Still waiting for up date on my monthly budget versus a weekend at home.

From who?

OP posts:
bafta16 · 10/06/2026 09:04

2 of us here, semi retired. Still paying a mortgage, all the usual bills. The weekend budget mentioned by OP is our monthly spend.

A weekend doing nothing? Really?

She was expecting it. And wanting it. She posts multiple threads about how much she’s spent with faux wide eyes

it's amazing how quickly the coffee's etc add up.
I have never been out for a coffee before and I am 60.

You've never once had coffee at a cafe/airport/park/christmas fayre etc?? Confused

Surely everything that isn't made at home with basic ingredients is "overpriced"? That sandwich you had at the cafe? over priced. The hotdog you had at the village fete? over priced... the cake you bought with the cup of tea at the kids school fete for £1.50 ... overpriced.

There has to be a drip feed as in she doesn't like coffee and has tea etc.

And I am not sure it's always "over priced"

Sure it can be at times.

But at home you are not paying business rates, business insurance, wages, public liability etc etc.

We work with quite a few independent cafes (and they are busy) but the margins are still really tight.

I think between 500-600 doing absolutely nothing!

How is that possible to have done nothing and have nothing to show for it? Unless you gambled it away - but that’s doing something I suppose.

The OP has established she actually had a very busy weekend doing lots of things.... except she thinks she didn't 😂

Realised after I posted that I was a couple of days late joining the thread. The thread was highly infuriating from the start so I should have just kept my beak-out!

Yes, the faux wide-eyed thing is very disingenuous. With the irritating ‘oops I somehow spent £500/£1k!’ depending on what thread she is starting.

I am all for people being able to spend however much they want on what they want and to enjoy life. But this continued need of a seemingly wealthy person to post this kind of stuff, is just weird and crass!

Too tired to scroll back. Go on OP, tell me, how do you spend 600 quid in a weekend doing nothing please.
Think you said a takeaway maybe?

Remove the word overpriced. My point still stands. And the majority of coffee bought out IS overpriced. Have you seen the prices in coffee shops recently?

Telling someone it's sad that they don't buy coffee out is only done to make them feel bad. And it's still not the standard of life the majority aspire to. "Ooh I'll know I've made it when I can buy a Costa". Daft logic.

Found it. A big shop, brunch and a few bits.

violetcuriosity · 10/06/2026 10:38

I get it, we can’t seem to leave the house without spending at least £50. If it was just us we would happily eat what we have in, read and watch tv all
day- maybe buy a bottle of wine. Sadly we have feral kids at the moment so even a trip to
B&M or the park is a requirement which always involves a coffee or icecream.

I wonder if the whole coffee and cake thing gained momentum in lockdown? I can remember going places without cake, a water bottle,a £5.00 coffee and so on.

Daisy12Maisie · 10/06/2026 11:21

I think if you are at home doing nothing you tend to do things like order birthday presents for people in advance or pay a few bills that don’t come out automatically.
I spent £14 earlier just buying the ingredients for a simple stir fry for 2 people. That’s a lot more than it used to be.
