Why so much hate for Landlords on MN?

Who do LL's get so much hate on MN?

It seems so much more hate than there is any real life.

I have seen so many posters claiming that landlords can charge whatever they want when it's blatantly untrue. It's like Landlords claiming that banks can charge whatever they want when it comes to remortgaging. Ultimately unless you have a monopoly, which housing definitely isn't, then you will be at the mercy of market forces. If demand exceeds supply then rents will go up. This suggest though that you need more landlords, not less. If existing landlords sell up then yes, an owner occupier might buy the house but it will also contract the supply of available rental properties further. This is bad news for renters.

It's just a bizarre train of thought it really is.

I wish it were true - but sadly for me it isn't!

Absolutely not. She’s a LL rolling in the dough and gleeful that some family money has enabled her to be in the position.
I’m just saying - one woman, no kids with 4 houses/flats etc- massively profiting from the housing market while younger generations can’t find somewhere affordable to live. I get why people are pissed off sometimes.

I think people are pissed off at the wrong people.

I think people need to stop being envious and pissed off with people who have more than them and funnel all that energy into improving their own lives

It’s not just on MN - most people dislike those who profit off a very expensive necessity. Also when you are struggling to get on the housing ladder, it grates to see others with multiple properties living off the hard work of others.

And lastly a lot of landlords are shit, tight-fisted and don’t look after their properties.

It would be bonkers not to look after your own property imo.

Agreed. Whilst they earnestly insist they're "making no profit"

So that mortgage is interest-only is it? 🙄

A lot of buy to let mortgages are interest only.

Many don’t.
Because they are tight-fisted.

I am a landlord, when not screwing over tenants in barely fit for humans accommodation I spend my time eating babies and clubbing seal pups.

Commodification of housing. That's why.

Have a google.

You are talking nonsense. Housing IS a commodity, and is necessarily monitised, otherwise there would be no incentive to provide it, and therefore no housing available for rent.

There was never golden age when housing was cheap to buy or rent. These kind of woke sentiments are never part of the narrative when you lease a car, or pay for anything else you have to pay for, so why apply them to renting a house?

Because a house or a roof over your head is a basic need. Yes some can be traded, but it does not negate the fact that it is a basic need. Leasing a car isn't.

No one’s stopping people from having a roof over their head

There are properties to rent or buy

Actually, a lot of landlords are stopping just that, by hoarding properties that aren't available for others to buy.

Did they do it to your detriment? I’m sure if you made a fair offer when the house was on the market, you could have bought it.

This Is just like the billionaire thread.

Given that house prices aren’t likely to go down to affordable levels any time soon, what do you suggest someone who lived alone does? I left school nearly 40 years ago and worked all the time since yet I couldn’t buy a house.

Well no
because there’s aren’t enough to rent anyway
Louds have been sold off in recent years.
Landlords aren’t hoarding them empty. They are renting them to people who need a roof over their head.

Not everyone is born with a deposit, not everyone wants to be tied down to home ownership.

Not everyone wants to line the pockets of people who own dozens or even hundreds of properties either.

Why can't they afford houses? Because some people are bloody hoarding them.

How is that a problem
People need options

what do people do who need to rent if there are no rentals

Students need rentals
People who’ve just started out need rentals , they don’t all find work near mum and dad
Divorcees and recently made single need rentals
Returners need rentals
People with bad credit need rentals
People who don’t want the hassle of owning need rentals
etc
etc
If theres none to rent not only is choice being taken away but they are left out in the cold with no where to live

Okay so you think that if they all sold their property portfolios, then people would be able to afford to buy a house?

There has never been a shortage of houses for sale in my area. But it has never been affordable on one average salary. I would not have been able to afford a house despite being in a relatively good wage even if they did dump all their portfolio.

So again, what do you suggest for those of us who can’t buy their own place?
