I think we need to think of the potential children here. You are potentially going to pass away at what 75/80+ so the child would go through their own what late 20s onwards lives loosing their parents early. You’d potentially never meet grandchildren etc.

If you have kids at 40 and live to the average age (into your 80s) how are you kids going from ‘late 20s onwards’ without parents? Check your workings.

40 isn’t old

Agreed, you can fall pregnant in your forties. So….. you want a child? What is the point of this thread?

LakieLady · 30/05/2026 08:31

A former colleague of mine got pregnant at 46. They'd been "trying" for years and years and had resigned themselves that it was never going to happen.

Her husband took early retirement at 50 as he'd always intended to, but instead of spending his days on the golf course as planned, he was doing child care and school runs.

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/05/2026 08:45

If this thread is genuine and not a wind up it paints a concerning picture of the quality of the education system in this country. On many levels.

Imagine having this little understanding of the biology of reproduction and being married…

Notsandwiches · 30/05/2026 09:02

Aa the mother of 2 children conceived whilst in my 40s, age is a poor form of contraception.

User3456 · 30/05/2026 09:08

Depends if you want a baby or not?
I am 55 and only just thinking about stopping contraception, still get the odd period, hoping they will give up completely soon...
If you want a baby start taking folic acid and be careful what other supplements you take (best to stick to ones suitable for pregnancy).

hypnovic · 30/05/2026 09:11

Unless he has the snip or its been one whole year since your last period this is how babies are made!! Your eggs dont turn to dust at 40!!

rrrrrreatt · 30/05/2026 09:13

I don’t agree with the posters making out 40 is really old to have a baby, plenty of people do just that.

My mum came off contraception just before 40 because she thought she didn’t need to worry - that’s how I came to exist. If you’re comfortable with that risk, fill your boots.

Meeeeeeow · 30/05/2026 09:21

Crap no. I’m 40 and I got pregnant last year. My mum got pregnant at 44. It’s no rarity.

DavidStopActingLikeADisgruntledPelican · 30/05/2026 09:24

Are you wanting to stop using all forms of contraception because you actively want to get pregnant and will be trying for a baby, or because you don’t think you can get pregnant once you turn 40? It’s unclear.

If you want to try for a baby at 40 then good luck hope you get what you want. If you don’t want to get pregnant then good luck, hope you get what you want.

feckingmassivecakeandvesttop · 30/05/2026 09:25

I love my oopsy 14 year old. I'm 55.

40 isn’t old

Geriatric mother is an outdated medical term for pregnant women 35 and over.

Have you gone through menopause (i.e. periods have completely stopped)? Has your partner had a vasectomy? If not, then there is a risk you'll get pregnant.

TeamGeriatric · 30/05/2026 09:39

I'm not entirely clear if you are trying to get pregnant or just have a more relaxed attitude to the possibility of having a baby later in life. I had my two kids in the second half of my 30s and was keen to try for a third pretty much as I hit 40. I was though very under prepared for the bruising experience that followed. We didn't use contraception when I was between the ages of 40 and 45 and that resulted in several (maybe 6 or 7) first trimester miscarriages and a pregnancy then ended in a termination due to a down syndrome diagnosis. Clearly there are many women successfully having babies in their 40s as evidenced by other posters, just sharing my own experience to give some balance, but wishing you all the luck in the world if pregnancy is indeed your aim.

So sounds like you actually want to get pregnant?

As long as you’re both on the same page, then go ahead!

This post could have been written by my mum 26 years ago! So glad she wrongly assumed her baby making days were over 😂.

Most people will struggle to conceive naturally at that age, but your body may well give it one last push and next thing you know you’re pregnant! Speak to your nurse before you make any decisions.

Gettingbysomehow · 30/05/2026 09:42

You .ust be joking my sisters had babies at 47 and 48.

Then you want more children?

How does your husband feel about that?

As someone who struggled with fertility for years, I had babies at 32, 38 and 41, so, good luck with that if you are hoping to avoid children.....

thejadefish · 30/05/2026 09:46

I had DC2 at 45 (naturally/no intervention). If pregnancy would be a happy outcome then yanbu/pregnancy is still a "risk" as it were. Good luck whatever you decide OP.

PepsiBook · 30/05/2026 10:01

Why does it matter if you're 40? If you stop contraception you could still get pregnant. I have many friends who had babies in their 40s.
If you don't want more kids, why can't your husband get the snip?

pigmygoatsinjumpers · 30/05/2026 10:12

Pointless thread unless the poster clarifies whether she intends to get pregnant or whether she does not want to get pregnant but thinks that at 40 her chances of conceiving are low.

So are you planning another baby or what?

monkeysox · 30/05/2026 10:14

68days · 29/05/2026 22:32

40 isn’t old

Beg to differ. Unless you don't have any DC yet then last couple years to try for 1.

BreatheAndFocus · 30/05/2026 10:31

You want to stop ‘conception’ - ie make sure you do NOT get pregnant, in which case you’ll need to continue with your contraception? Or are you trying to say that you want to stop your contraception (pill, coil, etc)? If it’s the second one of those, do you want a baby, or do you think being 40 magically means you can’t get pregnant so don’t need contraception?

The answer is simple: if you don’t want to get pregnant, you need to continue using contraception; if you do want to get pregnant, then stop contraception.

From your only other comment here about ‘40 not being old’, it sounds like you might want a baby or want to leave it to chance because you can’t decide? It’s better to make an informed decision after discussion with your partner. For a start, you’d need to take folic acid prior to conception if you plan to conceive.

Why not speak to the Family Planning nurse at your GP surgery? They can give you facts and talk things through with you and ensure you understand.

Well we are trying for a third. My husband is 55 but I am 39. Yes there is that risk but you can also die young at any age.

Coffeeandbooks88 · 30/05/2026 10:43

I should say I am nearly 40. We are having one last go with our last embryo and if it doesn't work DH is going for the snip. He is also doing that if we have a third. If we with infertility are thinking of doing that then you shouldn't give up contraception either.
