Are adults who give babies tablets showing American cartoons at full volume in medical waiting rooms the lowest form of life? (Serious, not in any way light-hearted)

Yabu these are clearly educational opportunities for the little one and far preferable to picking their nose and gawping around looking at judgy sick people.

And the mother may have had a really hard day and normally spends every second reading to her child and this is the first and only time that child will see a moving image.

Yeah cause it’s better to annoy the crap out of everyone around you and give zero f’s about social politesse.

A child doesn't need to be glued to a screen on full volume, at a doctors office, on a train, in a restaurant, etc etc etc.

Perfectly well behaved children who will run around and moan if they don't have a tablet?

Even the best behaved children make noise, sadly children aren't robotic.. I think a lot of these comments are from older people who just generally don't like children

I think a minority of comments are from lazy parents who shove tablets at their kids to avoid parenting.

Yes and before tablets it was snacks they'd shove at them.

I was at the antenatal clinic a few weeks ago for a growth scan. I needed a checkup on a non-life-threatening problem but still a serious pregnancy complication. I was pretty anxious.

All the info says NOT to bring your children to appointments. Yet the hot, crowded, waiting room was full of children. All of them were being ignored except for when they did something they shouldn't do or they were watching their tablet on LOUD. Then they'd get bored of the tablet, shriek, and be loudly scolded.
I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the same for every child in that waiting room and there were about 5 groups with children.

I appreciate childcare is hard to come by but if you have no choice but to bring them with you then the onus is on you to stop them impacting on others.

So sick of this attitude. Children are their own person. You cannot control a child anymore than you can control an adult. If a child acts like a child and they refuse to stop or starts doing something else that people don't approve of then what? What is this magical control that parents are meant to have? I hate this turn of phrase and cannot fathom it!

Comtesse · Today 17:36

It’s annoying but they are not the lowest of the low, so no I don’t agree. Sorry you are having a crap day.

TheBusyMoose · Today 17:37

Australian cartoons are worse, Bluey's parents are much too happy to interact and play and talk with their children. How dare they.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · Today 17:42

On a level with parents who let their kids ride scooters in shops

ThejoyofNC · Today 17:45

No I think the lowest form of people is the judgemental arseholes.

I couldn't give a fuck what someone's kid is doing in a doctor's waiting room. They're hardly spoiling an enjoyable experience are they?

I don't allow my own kids to use iPads at all. But if that's what gets another parent through the day then good luck to them.

Gloriia · Today 17:51

Just awful. Shove them in front of s blaring screen at home to avoid parenting but in a waiting room, particularly a medical area where people will be stressed, it's so inconsiderate.

Id have had to say can you mute it please and show some consideration.

LoisGriffinskitchen · Today 17:54

BingBongBish · Today 17:16

Are you saying you think full volume is acceptable when in a medical waiting room?

Bizarre if you do.

Nope, I’m saying sneering people are irritating.

BeardySchnauzer · Today 17:55

I feel quite sad there isn’t a sneering emoji

PumpkinSoupIsBetterThanYouThink · Today 17:57

Bigbrat · Today 16:42

I think thats's unfair. I do this with mine albeit I make sure it is as quiet as possible. However the alternative would be running around, moaning, constant chit chat... Sometimes we have to weigh up pros and cons

I never, ever did it with mine. Colouring in, small toys (fuzzy felts were great), little puppets, books... If they don't expect it, they won't ask for it. It really is intrusive even at a low volume and especially if everyone does it.

I hate it on the bus, train, restaurants, too.

None of the rest of us should have to listen to other people's electronic noise, ever.

Bizarre . Of course you have control over your children , would you let them run in front of a bus ? Then make them wear headphones or maybe try entertaining them yourself?

Well, I really like children! (I am a primary school teacher). I don't think screens should be the default and I actually think we are doing kids an incredible disservice if they are.

BeardySchnauzer · Today 18:01

The noise of cartoons on an iPad is far worse than a child giggling or making ‘playing’ noises with a doll or such like

its not noisy cartoons vs screaming child

BertieBotts · Today 18:03

CurdinHenry · Today 16:35

But can you think of lower forms of life?

Erm, yeah.

How about parents who don't care about their DC's feelings enough to even bother entertaining them in even the most annoying way? Parents who never take their DC out of the house, don't attend to their medical needs, prioritise their own drug use or whatever over the child?

It's a low bar I'll grant you, but still. Not quite the lowest.

Why can't you just give them headphones though? Everyone is happy then.

Yep. Kids are very easy to keep occupied without disturbing others.

Lol at all the 'sneering judgemental arsehole' attacks from folk who park their kids in front of screens in public Grin.

ShetlandishMum · Today 18:10

Next time ask them to put something Japanese...

And yes of course you should use headphones for the child.

Grapewrath · Today 18:19

I work in a health care reception and often have to tell parents to turn it down.
They have no consideration for other people who are unwell or people trying to work.
i say this as a parent to an autistic young person too
id far rather chatting or playing than the same noise on repeat at top volume

Itsasecretnow · Today 18:21

FrogsAreMean · Today 16:47

I think you are being completely unreasonable and ridiculously over dramatic to say “they are the lowest form of life” and “but can you think of lower forms of life”.

YES I can think of lower forms of life - how about criminals such as murderers or paedophiles etc!

You must have lived a sheltered life is all I can say!

I mean, don’t we all read a news article about a man who annihilates his family and think “welp, it could’ve been worse! tThank fuck it wasn’t a toddler with a noisy American cartoon blasting at full volume at the local gp surgery!” Because, yes, what on earth could be lower form of life than that?! I dunno, maybe op’s first thought would be more along the lines of “that’s one less potentially noisy pond scum to annoy me when I’m waiting for my ingrown toenail appointment”…

ETA: just in case I need to actually say it, yes that was sarcasm 🤦🏼‍♀️
and yes, noisy children in busy places is of course annoying, I could give many “back in my day they’d have had a crayon and a piece of recycled paper and they’d be strapped in and would behave like angels” etc anecdotes like so many have. But, ffs asking some pp “can you think of any lower forms of life?”. And actually stating they’re deadly serious that this is the lowest form of life? Yeah. Tell that to someone whose kid has died, or the family dealing with devastating csa, or the woman who was raped last year. Think you’ll find these might actually be lower forms of life, since you asked and couldn’t actually think of any yourself.

MummyWillow1 · Today 18:25

CurdinHenry · Today 16:35

But can you think of lower forms of life?

Yes, the ones who completely ignore the child and let them cause havoc.
