Are adults who give babies tablets showing American cartoons at full volume in medical waiting rooms the lowest form of life? (Serious, not in any way light-hearted)

Aaaaaaaaaa

OP posts:

OP is talking about a baby and the conversation has been around young children

the government is not responsible for parenting children. Thank god

I mean the government has issued guidance for parents on this.

None of which absolves anyone, child or adult, for inflicting the sound from their crappy tinny speakers on others in shared spaces.

This guidance came out very recently so not all will be aware - and the guidance for babies is no unsupervised screen time, so if its supervised with fun educational and bonding activities then government says its ok.

I was just thinking if I were on a ward I'd go on a killing spree

Why the fuck is it allowed

The staff sometimes use it as a pain distraction tool especially if medication is wearing off.
Like all things, there is a place for it.
i much preferred the low volumes of a few devices over the screaming child running around playing with their transformers at midnight in the ward.

Jessiesjammy · 30/05/2026 19:44

100% agree

Why are headphones not used? I always call people out on it and they act like they are surprised no one else wants to listen to their racket.

Well not quite.

How much screen time should my child have?
Limit total screen time for young children, wherever possible.

  • Under 2 years: Avoid screen time other than for shared activities with family that encourage bonding, interaction and conversation.
  • 2-5 years: Try to keep it to 1 hour a day. Less if possible

Very clear on limiting it for all under-5s (and goes into greater detail as well.)

I take your point that it's new but u don't agree that it's just for the government to fix. Detail on the impacts of screens weren't exactly lacking before.

OonaStubbs · 30/05/2026 19:53

I don't care how much screen time children have. But they should wear headphones/earphones so that they do not annoy others.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 30/05/2026 20:02

I don’t know why you didn’t ask the parent to lower the volume, the parent could be hard of hearing and not realise how loud it is.

You don't need to be hard of hearing to know that screens without headphones is going to annoy others, what ever the volume

Where are you @CurdinHenry whats the context ?

what’s stopping you from telling the parents that they either use headphones or the tablets will learn to fly.

No need for full volume though

Flamingojune · 30/05/2026 19:09

Interesting you didn't mention headphones once

Well, obviously “the government” should provide those. No parent could ever be expected to purchase them.

I don't like american chocolate, does that make me a xenophobe too? Or just someone who has taste buds?

If you don't like the Tate e that's fine. If you don't like to because "its nasty American and America is So Uncivilised" - yes.

I think thats's unfair. I do this with mine albeit I make sure it is as quiet as possible. However the alternative would be running around, moaning, constant chit chat... Sometimes we have to weigh up pros and cons

But the teaching them to be bored, wait, make small talk, means they have a blue print for the future.

JLou08 · 30/05/2026 22:02

As you're being serious and not at all lighthearted, of course they're not. There are things so much more worse than this.

Velumental · 30/05/2026 22:02

CurdinHenry · 29/05/2026 16:35

But can you think of lower forms of life?

The man watching something random and loud, new programme I think. On his phone, he must have been 60ish, while in the cardiology waiting area recently was pretty mind blowing. I feel like he could have worn headphones or tolerated the quiet for the 10 mins he had to wait. I can see why a toddler would struggle with those things though which is why, yes, I imagine the re e are lower forms of life than a parent try in g to get through a hospital in tal appt

And you think doing that when you need them calm and able to deal with a medical appt is the time? You've no idea how often that kid has been in a hospital or what for. The things my eldest has endured in a hospital I'll let him do whatever he needs to survive follow ups. He's 8. He is not old enough to either go volume zero or headphones but that's with years of learning to cope with sensory issues. At 3/4 it was a different story.

canuckup · 30/05/2026 22:05

American or not, yes.

Yes they are.

OonaStubbs · 30/05/2026 22:26

The only reason why use of a tablet is calming to a child is because parents use them at home to distract their child. Instead of, y'know, actually being a parent.

You have a problem. Just because someone doesn't like something it doesn't automatically mean they are against a country or it's population. That's crossing into paranoia .

Edit
I notice that you are trying to sidetrack the thread though. Got any views on twattish parents letting their kids have tablets with the volume up?
