2 charity climbers booed ,because they went before the queue to touch the top!Had already done the 3 peaks challenge and were exhausted .A man physically tried to stop them by putting his hand out! YABU they should have waited .YANBU they should not have been booed

AFAIK the queue was for people who wanted a photo of themselves posing at the trig point, whereas these 2 charity hikers just wanted to touch it to complete their challenge. Why should they be expected to queue for something they don't want?

Yes exactly.

The queue is surely only relevant if you want to take a photo of yourself at the trig point. If all you want to do is touch the trig point then walk away then I really don't see that it warrants a queue.

Climbers sometimes queue for the Everest summit.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/05/2026 10:44

I’m a bit torn because tbh it would annoy me to have to stand in a long queue just to tap something because others are fannying about taking selfies.

On the other hand, if the queue is the queue these two weren’t special just because they’d done two other mountains first. There could have been others waiting who also just wanted to tap it.

I think that’s the lack of clarity - is the queue just for selfies and should “tappers” be allowed to skip past, or is it a queue for all?

I’m going up in the summer and tbh I think I’d not bother to tap it if there’s a stinking great queue - I don’t really do queues! (As in, I don’t bother with things if theirs is one, not that I skip them as that’s rude and entitled).

Climbers sometimes queue for the Everest summit.

Often but there's only really one route up and down Everest, and climbers need to clip onto fixed ropes and climb ladders etc. so they have no choice. There are loads of routes up and down Snowdon and when you get to the top, you can pretty much approach from 360 degrees. Queuing with people who want photos makes no sense.

Getting people to give money for you to do an activity you want to do anyway then acting like you’re somehow special and more important than the people in the queue is antisocial and finishing a made up challenge in an arbitrary time limit is not an excuse.

Funny how these activities are never “collect 50 sacks of roadside litter in 24 hours” or “drive the day centre minibus every Saturday for a year” - it’s always some fun activity like skydiving or hiking they’d want to do anyway.

Ah! I was just about to say all of this but you said it better.
Loathe the whole charity/activity thing.
Just go do what you clearly want to do anyway- don't emotionally blackmail people for money- people who are busy doing life while you're doing your important activity.
And give your own sodding money to the charity!
I remember my sister-in-law raising money for airfare to go to China to walk the Great Wall ....for charity!

ChalkOutlines · 29/05/2026 10:47

The queueing thing is stupid as fuck. It also sounds(but I might be mistaken) that they took a different route to avoid the queueing and they didn’t want the whole photo op at the top .

Booing them was ridiculous, but so was going to the papers to cry about it.

Hoardasurass · 29/05/2026 10:48

The arrogance of those two men is outrageous.
How dare they try and shame people for booing them over the queue jumping, just because they were fundraising. The way they spoke about other people who complained about poor behaviour and excusing it by claiming that their charity t-shirts should have prevented it.
Honestly I thought that they were twats before I read their comments but now having read them and there oh aren't we so special and everybody should move aside for us crap I really hope that they get a social media pasting

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 29/05/2026 10:52

He was putting it on social media just like everyone else, so they should have just waited their turn.

CoyGoldenKoi · 29/05/2026 10:53

It's a mountain. The concept of a queue is inherently ridiculous and created by the social media obsession with a perfect shot.

IMHO no-one should be queuing. Take a (quick!) photo and accept that it'll have other people in it, you're not that special.

To me the inherent question is "Should people's desire for social media content be allowed to inconvenience others?"
To which, to me, the answer is clearly No.

So while I think they're ridiculous for getting upset about being booed (cos it's completely foreseeable that others who have decided to queue will be annoyed), I don't think they're unreasonable for bypassing a self-inflicted queue.

Pigeonatthewheel · 29/05/2026 10:55

The queue only exists because of people taking selfies. I think next time they should remember to pack a hi vis each and shout ‘mountain rescue coming through’ as they go past the queue.

RoseField1 · 29/05/2026 10:57

Did they cause anyone else queuing to have to wait longer? Were people annoyed because they got in someone's photo background and therefore slowed down the selfie line? Because if so that's pretty fucking stupid and I'm with the tappers. But if they physically got in between someone else and the trig (whatever that is) and actually delayed the queuers then I agree they were wrong. I'm inclined to think they weren't unreasonable though.

MyThreeWords · 29/05/2026 10:57

Ugh! Queues at a trig point! Presumably this is hordes of people for whom the actual walk up a mountain is less important than the Instagram moment at the top.

It's a queue for a photo-op and it is a kind of pollution of the summit.

Presumably the charity people had to touch the trig point just as a formal completion of the task for which they were receiving donations. There is zero reason why they should play along with a novel set of expectations generated by our increasing obsession with photos for social media.
Trig points have various roles. Why should their new Instagram role set conventions that dominate people who use them for other purposes?

Is this one of those mountains that can be approached by some pretty easy-peasy routes as well as the much harder ones? It is horrible when you complete a very challenging and isolated walk and find a crowded summit.

TheFrendo · 29/05/2026 10:58

If the two queue jumpers took selfies then they are in the wrong and should have joined the queue to take their turn.

I was up there on Sunday last with friend, doing a longer circuit.

I don't queue to touch the trig point. Never have, never will.

The queue is for folk taking selfies. It started with social media and has got ridiculous.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 29/05/2026 11:00

Everybody else was also tired.

Not a photo at the top though. So queue for what?

This mountain has a train that goes to the summit. Honestly.

StandingDeskDisco · 29/05/2026 11:01

What fresh hell is this?

In years gone by, if you climbed a popular mountain there was sometimes a small crowd people at the top, drinking or eating sandwiches whilst sitting around the trig point or cairn, and if you wanted a photograph, they were in the background. Nobody would dream of queuing for photos or expecting other people to get out of the way.

Do you now have to stay away from the summit until it is your turn?

We are going on holiday to North Wales in a couple of weeks. I am now wondering if we should give Snowdon a miss?

So if there’s a queue of people waiting to pay by card and a new till opens that says cash only and you go there you would stay queueing? It’s the same principle. They didn’t want or need the selfies at the top so they didn’t join that queue.

foreversunshine · 29/05/2026 11:03

If more people would employ common sense such as these two climbers, maybe we can get rid of the moronic "queuing at the top of a mountain" thing altogether.

ohyesido · 29/05/2026 11:04

I’m torn because they come across as arrogant and self righteous, expecting to be given bows and scrapes for their altruism…yet booing them and physically interfering with them is also very mean spirited.

I’d probably have tutted and then just forgotten about it as I do whenever anyone rudely cuts me up

5foot5 · 29/05/2026 11:04

This reminds me of this recent thread complaining about being expected to queue to go to view points etc. even if you don't want to take a photo.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5533539-am-i-alone-in-feeling-off-beam-about-phone-culture-in-museumsgalleriesnice-scenic-areas

Only a few people voted on this but here it was a unanimous vote for thinking the queuing is ridiculous.

I personally feel the queue on Snowdon should only be if you want to take a photo. Seems ridiculous to not be able to just walk to the trig, slap it and move on.

Am I alone in feeling off-beam about phone culture in museums/galleries/nice scenic areas? | Mumsnet

These past few years I've noticed that anywhere that's pretty like nice viewpoints in Venice, Capri, Paris, even a little pool I went to in Crete fgs,...

Its a bit phil and holly

44PumpLane · 29/05/2026 11:06

The queue is for those who want to take a pic without everyone in the background, everyone waits their turn to take their "I've made it" insta worthy pic.

For those who just want to get up to the top and touch the trig point and don't care about just snapping a selfie why would you queue?

It's like going to any natural beauty spot and saying EVERYONE must queue so that people who want an insta worthy pic can spend 5 minutes a piece taking the perfect selfie without anyone in it.....life is for living not just for putting on Instagram whilst pretending the whole rest of the world doesn't exist!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/05/2026 11:06

His touching of the trig point is included on his video. He's the same as everyone else there.
He's an arrogant twat who thinks he's too important to wait.

Thank you for the link @SandwichSuperstar

Last time I climbed Yr Wyddfa there was chaos - I had gone up the more challenging Crib Goch way with my two sons and emerged after not seeing anyone to a queue in about 3c while each person and group took turns to get multiple photos, one as we arrived was filming a short piece to camera etc. My sons and I ignored the queue, walked up to the base* of the rocks on the summit, snapped a selfie and left. I don't need to step up to the trig, and I certainly did not want to get cold waiting for others to faff around so I could do so.

Sounds like these two did just jump the queue to get right to the trig - and do sound somewhat entitled to suggest that by wearing a charity t-shirt they should be entitled to push past...

Ironically on the way down we were shouted at on the lead into the Pyg track as there was snow. So an even bigger queue had developed both uphill and downhill while folk took turns to nervously navigate the rocks past one section. My sons and I just glissaded (sledged) down on our bums past everyone and away from the path...I was given a right telling off by some chap about being safe in the mountains and how dangerous it was to show kids this. I asked for the gent's qualifications to tell me off - apparently 'common sense' from him trumped my Summer and Winter Mountain Leader, day job as Chief Instructor at a busy outdoor centre that walked Munro's in Scotland every week with groups of kids, and probably my 10th time up Yr Wyddfa...
