WIBU To ask for a different lady to scan my shopping?

goodoldsussexbythesea · 20/05/2026 19:13

I do my big shop in Tesco once a week. I usually have around 100 items. I do scan as you shop and I seem to get picked a lot for a random basket check. Fine.
There's one lady who always seems to be working on the self-scan when I go in. She's an older lady and she is incredibly slow. It's so frustrating as I usually don't have a lot of time.
I don't just mean a little bit slow either. I mean about 10 seconds or so between scanning each item. With lots of sighing and breaks and stopping. I think last time she could see the frustration on my face because she said "it's stressful, isn't it?" and I'm like yes... because you are being so slow (didn't say this out loud). I almost asked if she'd like to give me the scanner and let me do it for her but I didn't want to be rude.
Last time, the scanner was telling her she needed to scan over 80 items so it took absolutely forever.
And she puts it all back into the bags wrong too.

So anyway, today I went to tesco, got selected for random bag check and saw this lady was on. My heart sank. I needed to rush home and put it all way and then go on the school run. I didn't need another 20 minutes adding on. She started making her way very slowly towards me and I said, in the politest voice I could muster "do you mind if your colleauge does it?" She looked really taken back so I said "it's just I'm in a bit of a rush, sorry" I tried to look as apologetic as I could but she looked really confused and a bit upset.

The colleague heard the conversation, came over and started scanning. I was out of there and in my care in under 5 minutes.

I feel so bad though. I don't like upsetting people and I keep thinking of her face. I just couldn't do it though, it's so bloody painful.

I don't want to be mean enough to say anything to her supervisor but I really don't think she should be on that section. She should be sitting down on one of the tills, where she's not on her feet and customers haven't chosen a quicker option.

WIBU?

I can't get the slots I need with no notice. They fill up.
I can't order in advance without money in my account. A PP has even explained why I can't.
I explained why I don't use normal checkouts.
I literally posted my entire weekly schedule for you people.

And still people are repeating and repeating and repeating the same stuff that's already been addressed.

I am done. It's actually just extra irritation and stress I don't need.

You might as well go through the normal checkout if you’re always being selected. Especially for a big shop. I’ve never used 1 it’s frustrating enough using the self checkout when I’ve only got a couple of things.

goodoldsussexbythesea · 20/05/2026 21:40

THANK YOU!!!!! I think this might actually be why!

Because I promise it does check my card and won't let me order and I can't understand why people are saying its bollocks. I even went on my tesco app and tried to order in case I was wrong and it didn't let me!

Well there we go then problem solved. Do a small online order tomorrow to be delivered any evening and then you will be able to use online delivery/click and collect every week going forward.

Except something tells me you won’t 🤣

If you had 80 items to be rescanned then you must have had a huge shop. I work in retail and have never seen anybody need that many in a random check even at Christmas unless you failed the check and needed a full rescan

The most I've ever seen is in the 40s and that will be a £200/300 shop

youalright · 20/05/2026 21:50

tachetastic · 20/05/2026 21:24

With respect, I think that is a foolish question.

The purported aim of self scanning is to save time for shoppers by allowing the scanning to be done as they go around the store. A customer choosing this option typically has little time.

If every shopper has to build in enough time for their items to be scanned by a member of staff anyway, the whole process provides no benefit at all to the customer, but only to the supermarket which controls the decision as to how many customers to check on any given day.

But you agree to this when you sign up to use it so you know you need to allow yourself the extra time

JemimaTiggywinkles · 20/05/2026 21:50

You aren’t unreasonable OP. And I absolutely HATE the “just pay extra to have it delivered” attitude. If you had spare money to chuck away - fine. My experience of delivery was expensive (cos I wanted my shopping delivered evenings / weekends when I’m not at work) and there was always something missing. No chicken mid-shop is fine cos I could replan a meal and buy what I need. No chicken in my delivery meant a trip to Tesco (that I was trying to avoid) or paying ££££ for the same item in a local shop.

Well actually maybe I will, since someone has actually been helpful!!

Why does something tell you I won't? because I'm dramatic and am just finding excuses because I can't possibly know my own fucking life?!!

Glad you're finding it all so amusing.

You sound like someone who just loves to complain and does not want to look at alternative solutions.

  • Just go to another supermarket
  • order online. The money does not go out of your account until after the delivery so you need to do is book a delivery slot for the day AFTER you get paid so you know that you have money in your account.

Complete non issue.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 20/05/2026 21:53

Yanbu as you did it as politely as you could

There was a really slow man helping me in Asda yesterday - I just thought, you look like you need to sit down. But was friendly and didnt complain obvs

This is what happens now that people are labelled 'fit to work' - no retail jobs available for young students, slow people manning the self scan checkout

I have to shop on the day I get paid, which is weekly on a Thursday. I don't have the budget to order it in advance and I'd have to order it a few days before to get the slot I need. I believe they check your card to make sure you've got the money on there, and I wouldn't have on, say, a Tuesday, I'd only have my weekly spending money which isn't as much as I spend on a big shop. If that makes sense.
Same reason I can't get it delivered.
Can't chose another supermarket either as we are remote. I only have a tesco and a waitrose. Otherwise, I'd shop in lidl.

I get my big shops at Tesco delivered. There’s often slots in the morning for the same day in the evening. I am sure there will be click and collect slots available as well. You add what you need to your basket throughout the week.

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 20/05/2026 21:57

Sometimes, I am actually worried about the people I see on here being bullied.

OP, please do step away now. As you say, you don't need it. These people don't want to listen to you. This is evidenced by the fact that they are endlessly coming up with the same solutions over and over even though they have been addressed and explained over and over again. It's planly obvious they have no interest in reading what you have to say. They just see a "gotcha!" moment and post it so they can gleefully enjoy feeling as though they caught you out.

Don't let it get to you. Enjoy your evening and relax and don't give this any more thought.

How do you know what she sounds like when you very clearly haven't bothered to read what she says?

She has explained why she can't go to another supermarket. She said there is only a Tesco and a Waitrose available where she lives.

She has explained why she can't order for the next day, many many times.

It's very clearly an issue for her and nothing to do with what she asked for advice on.

Technically you are 100% right, but I think even most companies would accept that they build a worst case scenario into their terms and conditions.

Do we have to live our entire lives on the assumption of worst case scenario? The world is depressing enough as it is........ 😫

traitorstraitors · 20/05/2026 22:01

@goodoldsussexbythesea OP, breathe.

Don’t worry about the check out lady. She will be fine. She knows she is slow. She will have been able to see you were in a rush. You were not shouting or swearing or name calling.

She will be fine.

This has got hugely overwhelming. People are just trying to help, but when they are all saying the same things, without knowing your circumstances, I know it doesn’t help.

Step away. Breathe. Try and get some sleep.

(As an aside, if you ever get paid early again, try a small Tesco order. Maybe once you get that first order the next ones will go through, as a pp suggested, and it will provide you with another option.)

ThatCosy · 20/05/2026 22:01

Tesco checkouts are sooooo slow

I have no chance of getting a same day delivery or click and collect slot from my Tesco. All areas are different, and some have more delivery drivers than others.

OP has said she can't either. Why would she be lying?

Especially if Tesco and Waitrose are her only supermarkets, I expect there's a high demand.

Maybe you will - they have literally just solved the issue of how to make your life easier and it’s a maybe…..

No I came to that prediction because, going by this thread, you seem completely inflexible to the idea of change that isn’t you doing a full weekly shop on a Thursday and using a self scanner.

RollOnSunshine · 20/05/2026 22:03

I would ask to see a manager if the machine wanted 80 items rechecking. firstly the time and secondly I pack my items very specifically and do not want the light items squashed.

I they insisted on 80 getting re-scanned I would empty everything out of my bags and walk off. Yes it's going to necessitate a trip to another shop but they are taking the piss with that number.

Youhadrambledonfor18pages · 20/05/2026 22:05
  • Do your big shop at a time when you’re not in a rush
  • do your big shop online
  • don’t bother with scan as you shop - just bung in the trolley then go to checkout

There are lots of options available to you that won’t cause this hassle.

I said, in the politest voice I could muster "do you mind if your colleauge does it?" She looked really taken back so I said "it's just I'm in a bit of a rush, sorry"

If someone gets asked not to return for saying the above then the world really has gone mad.

As an aside, the number of OP-bashing threads lately have made me realise that I’m genuinely wasting my time here.

The way OP is coming across on here, I doubt her 'politest voice' was probably at best rude & at worst abuse.

No it's not okay to refuse staff members based on protected characteristics like age or disability & a supermarket manager would not support that.

She needs the supermarket more than they need her.

Serencwtch · 20/05/2026 22:08

goodoldsussexbythesea · 20/05/2026 21:29

I have explained SO MANY TIMES why I can't!!!

Well then YOU NEED TO PUT UP with the length of time it takes.

You are conflating two different things.

Being old does not = being slow
Being young does not = being fast

Being slow is not a protected characteristic.

They have no choice. Once you have been selected for a check the items won't transfer from your hand scanner to the checkout without either being put through their scanner or you having them scanned at a manned till or going through self scan

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread but why do you have to do a big shop on the day you're paid? Why not shop the day after? You aren't being unreasonable but your life seems unnecessarily stressful.

I'm finding this thread unnecessarily stressful on behalf of @goodoldsussexbythesea.

I think it is fair for people to say she is being unreasonable by asking for another assistant (which I actually think was quite reasonable) but for goodness sake just accept the assignment that was set. 🙄😩😂
