WIBU To ask for a different lady to scan my shopping?

goodoldsussexbythesea · 20/05/2026 19:13

I do my big shop in Tesco once a week. I usually have around 100 items. I do scan as you shop and I seem to get picked a lot for a random basket check. Fine.
There's one lady who always seems to be working on the self-scan when I go in. She's an older lady and she is incredibly slow. It's so frustrating as I usually don't have a lot of time.
I don't just mean a little bit slow either. I mean about 10 seconds or so between scanning each item. With lots of sighing and breaks and stopping. I think last time she could see the frustration on my face because she said "it's stressful, isn't it?" and I'm like yes... because you are being so slow (didn't say this out loud). I almost asked if she'd like to give me the scanner and let me do it for her but I didn't want to be rude.
Last time, the scanner was telling her she needed to scan over 80 items so it took absolutely forever.
And she puts it all back into the bags wrong too.

So anyway, today I went to tesco, got selected for random bag check and saw this lady was on. My heart sank. I needed to rush home and put it all way and then go on the school run. I didn't need another 20 minutes adding on. She started making her way very slowly towards me and I said, in the politest voice I could muster "do you mind if your colleauge does it?" She looked really taken back so I said "it's just I'm in a bit of a rush, sorry" I tried to look as apologetic as I could but she looked really confused and a bit upset.

The colleague heard the conversation, came over and started scanning. I was out of there and in my care in under 5 minutes.

I feel so bad though. I don't like upsetting people and I keep thinking of her face. I just couldn't do it though, it's so bloody painful.

I don't want to be mean enough to say anything to her supervisor but I really don't think she should be on that section. She should be sitting down on one of the tills, where she's not on her feet and customers haven't chosen a quicker option.

WIBU?

If you were a customer in my shop. I would be asking you to shop elsewhere.

Retail workers should not have to put up with this attitude towards them.

Yes you have issues & problems, as does the majority of the population & also the retail workers themselves.

Your situation means you are limited in options so you need to work with what's available.

Rescans/basket checks are definitely not random. If you are getting more than average then in the kindest way you probably need to use a manned checkout or click & collect - you could split it into 2 shops if you struggle to budget.

Taking it all out on retail workers is not the answer

It’s kinda funny how you suggest the OP might not be suited to doing scan as you go, but when people who are clearly not suited to working on the self scan it’s apparently a banning offence to not have time for it on a single occasion?!?

Trixie4577864 · 20/05/2026 21:30

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate.

You weren’t rude. It’s nice that you’re thinking of her but I wouldn’t worry. I’m sure she’s had worse. I’m sure you have more to worry about.

I expect them to do a different job. Th bb ge ones at my local Morrisons are way past retirement age and possibly earning extra. Fair enough, but not on the tills.

It's not easy to just "opt out" pretty much in tesco is on a part time contract, if you want to be able to pay your bills, you're reliant on picking up OT, sometimes one department, in this case self service, can be your only option.

MrsWalker2025 · 20/05/2026 21:32

This is all so odd. You could just do in to the supermarket and go through a normal checkout, you could just order online like lots of people have said and they don’t check you have money on your card.

Serencwtch · 20/05/2026 21:33

goodoldsussexbythesea · 20/05/2026 21:29

I have explained SO MANY TIMES why I can't!!!

In that case you will have to accept that is the option available to you & accept that it won't meet your high demands in terms of speed.

How would you cope if the store manager asks you not to return?

Most supermarkets now take a zero tolerance approach to abuse towards staff, especially those with disabilities or additional needs.

Yeah but that’s bollocks. They don’t take the money till it’s been packed the same morning it’s delivered. When stores verify the card they will check you have anything below £1 in there, usually 90p or something but afaik Tesco don’t do this!

Actually you haven’t explained why you can’t use a normal check out, so why is that?

You said yourself you go at a quiet time which is why they keep doing a rescan….

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 20/05/2026 21:34

I can clear up the issue OP is having with deliveries/click and collect!!

They check you have enough money the first time you order

So if OP has never done an online order before then it absolutely will check her card. Not taken the money - that's done on the day - but check the card to see if the money is on there, like she says.

This explains why so many of you are saying if doesn't check the card at all and you can order with just pennies in your accounts. It's not your first order.

And if OP has never successfully been able to order it then it's always her first order. So she probably has tried loads of times and it won't work for her.

OP, I suggest that you either use someone else's account or make a tiny order on a Thursday, so that it learns to "trust" you and doesn't check your card every time.

I really hope that helps.

Cheeble · 20/05/2026 21:34

Serencwtch · 20/05/2026 21:29

It's okay to feel frustrated.

It's not okay to take that out on retail workers.

Define “taking it out on”. The OP didn’t “take her frustration out on” anyone.

Lovelyview · 20/05/2026 21:35

Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread but why do you have to do a big shop on the day you're paid? Why not shop the day after? You aren't being unreasonable but your life seems unnecessarily stressful.

I have explained that actually. Please read my post re - normal checkouts.

If someone gets asked not to return for saying the above then the world really has gone mad.

As an aside, the number of OP-bashing threads lately have made me realise that I’m genuinely wasting my time here.

Berlinlover · 20/05/2026 21:38

I work in a supermarket and this wouldn’t bother me at all. Working in grocery retail gives you a thick skin.

Fuck that. Get your shopping delivered or go elsewhere. Unless you’re regularly mis scanning items then regular checks of 80 items is a piss take. Cba with that.

THANK YOU!!!!! I think this might actually be why!

Because I promise it does check my card and won't let me order and I can't understand why people are saying its bollocks. I even went on my tesco app and tried to order in case I was wrong and it didn't let me!

i hope when you are old and tired and working past time you thought you would be retired by that some young woman treats you as badly.

I am considered “old”, but I disagree.

There are a few people (both old and young) locally who are incredibly, painfully slow on the till. It can take forever to get to the front of their short queues while watching other queues move twice as fast. I’m mentally tearing my hair out when I’m in a hurry.

I don’t think OP did anything wrong. It’s frustrating when you’re in a hurry and it is a business where efficient service is necessary.

KuanKaKu · 20/05/2026 21:42

You’re being ageist, hopefully Tesco will support their employee and prevent them from being subjected to ageist customers in future.., hopefully you’re on their cameras and she can point you out to her line manager to ensure she is not subjected to discrimination at work

I would get a credit card. Do a click and collect order for Thursday once your payment has been charged send a payment from your bank account to clear the credit card

Maybe order the day she gets paid for the following day then?!!

goodoldsussexbythesea · 20/05/2026 21:45

I'd also just like to point out that I don't think slow lady should be just kicked from this department because she's an inconvenience to me.
She's clearly exhausted by it. I said in my OP, she's not just slow. She stops for breaks. She huffs and puffs her way through it. She told me it's stressful. It's not good for her.
And yes, I am not the one to decide that for her, but someone should take her aside and ask if this is working for her. Because I don't know how she carries on, quite frankly. Maybe, like me, she currently doesn't have a lot of choices in life :(
