WIBU To ask for a different lady to scan my shopping?

I do my big shop in Tesco once a week. I usually have around 100 items. I do scan as you shop and I seem to get picked a lot for a random basket check. Fine.
There's one lady who always seems to be working on the self-scan when I go in. She's an older lady and she is incredibly slow. It's so frustrating as I usually don't have a lot of time.
I don't just mean a little bit slow either. I mean about 10 seconds or so between scanning each item. With lots of sighing and breaks and stopping. I think last time she could see the frustration on my face because she said "it's stressful, isn't it?" and I'm like yes... because you are being so slow (didn't say this out loud). I almost asked if she'd like to give me the scanner and let me do it for her but I didn't want to be rude.
Last time, the scanner was telling her she needed to scan over 80 items so it took absolutely forever.
And she puts it all back into the bags wrong too.

So anyway, today I went to tesco, got selected for random bag check and saw this lady was on. My heart sank. I needed to rush home and put it all way and then go on the school run. I didn't need another 20 minutes adding on. She started making her way very slowly towards me and I said, in the politest voice I could muster "do you mind if your colleauge does it?" She looked really taken back so I said "it's just I'm in a bit of a rush, sorry" I tried to look as apologetic as I could but she looked really confused and a bit upset.

The colleague heard the conversation, came over and started scanning. I was out of there and in my care in under 5 minutes.

I feel so bad though. I don't like upsetting people and I keep thinking of her face. I just couldn't do it though, it's so bloody painful.

I don't want to be mean enough to say anything to her supervisor but I really don't think she should be on that section. She should be sitting down on one of the tills, where she's not on her feet and customers haven't chosen a quicker option.

The question was, was she unreasonable to request the other available staff member instead.

You think SWBU and I think she wasn't. That's all that was required here.

I didn't say the OP had advocated for the staff member to be dismissed, my post was responding to another poster, so why not wind your neck in and actually try reading posts properly before you completely get the wrong end of the stick with your condescending attitude?

The onus is on Tesco here to employ/maintain appropriate staff, and to then give them appropriate work. There are a variety of roles I see whenever I go shopping, and they should know who is struggling with what and move them accordingly.

Well they do a % of your trolley in my local Tesco so it can easily be 80 items.

Yeah if she was doing a £500 weekly shop maybe but someone struggling financially its unlikely

Obviously OP didn't do that - you can tell from her posts on this thread (and actually starting it) that she is kind and considerate and didn't want to upset the woman. Many of us would be the same.

But surely you must know that lots of people are not like that, and have no patience with elderly or disabled people's needs at all and would react very differently?

Lots of people everywhere are wankers, but that’s not got anything to do with OPs situation.

If the ‘elderly or disabled people’ are put in the area where they feel stressed then the manager or whoever sorts the rota should move them. But it’s not OPs fault or problem to sort.

A couple of posters have said the same thing, to just move her to another role. Move her to where? The 3 core areas are pick, fill, serve, if you're physically struggling she's already in the most appropriate area for that, serve.

No, I agree - I was thinking from the perspective of the ultra slow staff member and how what she could be subjected to from much less nice customers than OP.

Well what happens to other people when they cannot move someone, they cannot support someone, they cannot retrain someone?

Ultimately if someone cannot do the job and you have supported them as best as you can (which is Tesco’s job) then what? Carry on employing them because it’s fine as we will always pair her up with Emily as Emily will now do two peoples jobs? Tesco are there to make a profit and I can’t see them paying someone if they can’t do the job.

If Tesco have a delivery driver who loses his licence, Management don’t want to retrain him for the shop floor, Management don’t want to retrain him to do the trolleys, then what?

Well she will be jobless unable to pay her bills, which no one will want, we dont know she cant do her job to the managers standards, its just not to ops.
Tesco (and all the supermarkets tbh) are great at hiring and keeping disabled people (I am one) or people that may struggle due to age etc, they know they are the perfect employer for this type of stuff, as theyre an entry level employer. It didnt work for the OP that day, but it could not work for her even if every single person working self scan was ultra fast, they may be caught up with another customer etc, going through the scan as you shop is not a guarantee of absolute speed and there are alternatives like the normal checkouts even if its not what she wants to do

But she can do her job its only op who thinks she can't. I think the fact op stated she had a 80 item rescan proves she's prone to exaggerating so I highly doubt the woman is even that slow. People tend perceive time very differently when waiting I honestly wish supermarkets had timers that customers could press because lots of people have a very bad habit of saying I've been waiting 10 minutes and its been 2

Not really. I’m always given a week’s worth of fresh food that has to be eaten in the next 48 hours. They don’t know what order you’re planning to cook it, that you’re doing the chicken tomorrow but need the beef mince to last until Saturday. I’d much rather shop myself if possible so I can check the dates. We’ve also got so many allergies in our house and substitutions are an issue. They don’t know that we can only have one particular brand of a product which is safe. Internet food shopping is a minefield.

You haven’t upset her or anything, the speed at which her colleague took over suggests that you are not the first person to mention it.
First off your life sounds exhausting, I hope you have some therapy or something in play as that doesn’t sound good.
Secondly, if you have a spare £10 at the end of the week, try placing a click and collect order or a delivery slot for a small amount - I found £10 did it for me. The system will learn to “trust” you and have faith that you can pay and you will be able to get a delivery in future.
Thirdly, it sounds like your autistic daughter has been really lucky having a SEND school place! That must be a huge weight off your mind because of the help from school.
Finally, have you considered asking your pub boss for an advance to try and order a slot? Explain it all to him/her exactly as you have done here and maybe they will help you - I find people are much more willing to help if you explain the circumstances instead of taking it on by yourself.

where I work we do. I regularly have customers telling me they’ve been waiting ages and I point out it’s only been 3 minutes…

Am I missing something here? We shop regularly in Tesco, and occasionally elsewhere, and always scan items straight into bags in our trolley as we go around. When we are finished, we scan a barcode at the scanner machine to say we've stopped shopping, pay in just the same way as if we were processing a small self-scanned load into the bagging zone,take our receipt and we're off on our way. Sometimes a little queuing, but generally none at all. 5 minutes at most on a bad day! We get the very rare basket check, but haven't had one for months now.
