Is Andy Burnham reasonable to say only a small minority of women object to men being in their toilets? YABU he's right, YANBU he's wrong *titled tweaked by MNHQ at OP's request*

'I don't think that's a majority view. I think it's a minority view and quite a small minority view, actually. But it is a view so you can't completely ignore it. Possibly they might be women who have experienced male violence at some point in their life. I don't know, that's one way of looking at it.'

Andy Burnham backs men who identify as female using women's toilets

The Greater Manchester mayor said the idea that single sex spaces like toilets should be protected for biological women was a 'minority view'.

Like Kemi Badenoch has you mean? Well tbf she's got my vote when/if the time comes

I want to vote for her too but someone on another post said she’s pro fox hunting and will lift the ban which I’m not ok with so I’ll have to look more into that.

Toilets are always used as an example because they have cubicles, so it makes women who are concerned about it seem like they are being over anxious and mean. Maybe Andy Burnham is too stupid to realise that you either have single sex spaces or you don't. Or maybe he genuinely believes that people can change sex.

What about communal changing rooms, teachers supervising pupils on residential trips, changing rooms in schools, healthcare professionals carrying out intimate exams, body searches at airport security, dormitories in boarding schools and on school trips, communal accomodation in jobs like the army? At what point do you think he would draw the line and stop playing along?

I'm not ok with that either. But she wouldn't get that through anyway, as Cameron failed, so would she.

So reporting on something he has openly said and apparently believes is 'smearing' him, is it?

Only if sharing it is something he should be thoroughly bloody ashamed of as should any other decent person.

The country he wishes to lead has every right to know who he is and what he believes in. If he wants to be a proud TRA then crack on, it's a free country, but why hide it? Unless there's something wrong with it.....?

Very happy for him to apologise, acknowledge that he hadn't thought it through, and say that he has changed his mind.

Northermcharn · 20/05/2026 16:26

Yeah. Yet again we have a man telling women that they have to accept men telling women that men are women.

Fck off Burnham. Fck off Starmer. Fck off Streeting. Fck off Lammy.

Edited

Yep they can all take each other out with their infighting.

Gillydoller · 20/05/2026 16:35

I have also experienced violence and sexual assault from many men as I had the great misfortune to be a teenager in the 60s. When people say 'Not all men," my response is maybe not all, but an awful bloody lot of them. And what was overt in the 60s, 70s and 80s is simply covert now with a very pornified generation of younger men displaying an extra edge of hatred and spite as they realize we need them less and less and won't put up with their shit anymore.

However I think you are totally missing the point. As soon as some men are able to access single sex spaces because they are supposedly trans, then other men, trans or otherwise, will also feel entitled to access them too for reasons connected with trouser filth and general perving. And before we know where we are, we'll no longer have any single sex spaces.

You are right that men can assault us wherever they like, but why should we make it even easier for them? And in addition, single sex spaces are single sex simply because they are where we are at our most vulnerable because we are in a state of undress.

This is about far more than excluding trans identifying men - it's about excluding all men. And at a time when being trans means that men don't necessarily even need to look like a female and only have to feel a bit girly, while expecting to enjoy heterosexual relationships too, we are at far greater danger than we have ever been before.

This is a beautifully put post which sums up the crux of the issue that men like Burnham completely ignore. Women don’t dislike trans women pushing in their spaces because they’re trans. They don’t want them there because they’re MEN. It’s MEN who are the issue. MEN, MEN, MEN, MEN, MEN.

MEN carry out 97% of the sexual assaults against women. Trans women are MEN.

Women aren’t ’transphobic’ they’re MENphobic and for good reason.

But how would we know this is genuine, rather than a political move to try to gain votes. I appreciate that could be said about anything any politician says, but generally the think that people say first is the thing they believe.

I'm happy for anyone to argue over when single sex provision is and isn't appropriate.

It's not as though women haven't complained about being excluded from golf clubs.

This might be heresy, but I wouldn't care if the residents of Hampstead decided that they wanted all of the ponds to be mixed sex.

The thing that makes no sense at all is single sex provision that can be used by anyone on grounds that nobody fully understands. It vaguely suggests that women need separate provision because they are 'feminine' while ignoring the reasons that women actually need single sex provision and suggesting that people might be refused access on grounds that would be discriminatory in any other situation.

Agree with your logic, that’s a really important point.

I would be prepared to accept an apology and a change in attitude from any politician out there. Everyone should.be given the opportunity to reflect and admit that their previous stance was wrong. Whether that will happen we shall see.

Mine too. I'm not 100% behind everything she is for, but given the other options, she is way out ahead. I like the fact that she says what she means and means what she says.

People say Tories are backwards but to me they feel more progressive, with 4 female pms/leaders (and yes I know 1 was rubbish and short lived) and 2 POC as leaders. To my knowledge every labour pm has been a middle aged white male.

It is though sadly not uncommon to discover in later years, often via the newspapers, that men who feel passionately that women should not be permitted privacy, dignity, or escape from men when in a state of undress, very much did find this to do with them and their interests. In fact their interest in the matter suddenly gains a lot more clarity.

I think the SNP had a recent case in point.

carnivalcat · 20/05/2026 16:50

I don’t mind trans women using the women’s toilets and neither do most people I speak about this with IRL. However, I know some women do. So the answer is simple isn’t it. No biological men in the women’s toilets.

Monty36 · 20/05/2026 16:58

I have no gripe against trans people whatsoever.
What matters to me in a loo is how safe and clean the facility is. There will be some women who may well not be. From drugs, booze, unhinged.
But they are women so we have to share.
And for trans people they may well not be safe from some women. I would recommend they use the disabled loo. I say this as a disabled person.
The only thing about disabled loos is people often don’t lock them properly.

whatistheworld · 20/05/2026 16:58

this is literally ridiculous, they use a cubicle and wash their hands!!! an open changing room is different but a public loo??? come off it.

I bet most of you already have and didnt realise because funnily enough they look like women!!

Probably at the point when activist colleagues and constituents stop threatening him (or threatening to threaten him)

or

When the political winds blow in a decisively different direction.

Whichever comes first.

She basically just parrots Farage (because that is where the votes are) but she does it shamelessly which is refreshing, the Labour clown show are far too stuck in Woke World and scared of offending anyone (unless they are British white working class) or straying too far from the focus group feedback. She has FA chance of being in power though IMO, they will have no option but to cut deals with Reform after the next GE.

WestwardHo1 · 20/05/2026 17:02

I was not going to ever vote for Labour anyway, and now I'm definitely not going to. The Tories are starting to look like the best option (for me)
