I wear big comfy pants. I’d like to understand why people wear uncomfortable looking underwear

Is it for men? If so why wear it on a daily basis when you’re not having sex? If you lived on a desert island on your own would you still wear the uncomfortable itchy lace stuff? Aibu

Some women find bras really uncomfortable and can't wait to get it off as soon as they get home. Some, like me, don't find them uncomfortable and can't really feel at all it so don't have the same desire to take it off asap. It cannot be news to you that people find different things comfortable or not.

Boomer55 · 20/05/2026 09:29

I just wear bikini style knickers - always have.

I find granny pants uncomfortable.

notnowmaud · 20/05/2026 09:31

My pants, along with some other items of clothing, got misplaced on a flight (or at least I was on one flight and my case wasn’t) long story short, first day on holiday and I had to borrow my dh boxers. Do you know what? I’ve never looked back. Boxers all the way from that time on.

I find big pants so uncomfortable. I don't want all that extra material touching me. I've worn thongs for over 25 years and the only time I wore big pants was just after I gave birth to keep the ginormous maternity pads in place.

Exactly the same. I've worn thongs ever since I had a choice in buying my underwear as a teen. Only wear big pants if I'm having a heavy period, or have just given birth. I hate the feel of the material cutting in to or under my bum cheeks. I can barely feel I'm wearing a thong, whereas I'm constantly aware and uncomfortable wearing big knickers.

Everyone finds different things comfortable, maybe it comes down to anatomy. The only annoying thing about thongs is when people (other women) assume you're lying about finding them comfortable and that you secretly only wear them for the male gaze.

turkeyboots · 20/05/2026 09:39

I don't find lace itchy. The elastic trim on most big pants however will have me clawing my skin off.

That is the lie that women have been fed since birth. Men don’t generally have uncomfortable clothing.

Women are encouraged to wear ridiculously uncomfortable stuff because it pleases the male gaze and we are lead to believe that comfortable = ugly.

Some people then feel they prefer uncomfortable, impractical clothing.

This, every word.

I wear thongs for myself every day.... Never for a man! I find them more comfortable than all the material of a 'big knicker' Plus, I feel like my nan in big knickers 😆

ButterYellowFlowers · 20/05/2026 09:50

Humans are shaped in different ways that make things fit differently. I find very large undies horrible because I am unevenly shaped so they ride up…

Same as bra shapes working for different shapes.

LettuceAndCarrots · 20/05/2026 10:00

I absolutely hate thongs, they are so uncomfortable to me. Like having a wedgy all the time. But I suppose different people are shaped differently and feel things differently as I have friends who find them really comfy.

I feel the same about flip flops - some people clearly can wear them comfortably all day but for me, they are the devil's footwear. I hate the thing between your toes, they won't stay on my feet. I literally can't walk in them as they immediately fall off. Urghh. I suppose it must be my foot shape.

Similarly leggings, and some kinds of fabric.

If I'm wearing a dress, I actually like a petticoat in lieu of knickers.

BauhausOfEliott · 20/05/2026 10:05

Why do you need to understand this? Other people’s underwear doesn’t affect you. Just assume that people are wearing whatever knickers make them happy.

wendywoopywoo222 · 20/05/2026 10:09

Whatever your shape of underwear I would say that if it’s uncomfortable it’s probably the wrong size. I always size up with a thong

OFiddleDeeDee · 20/05/2026 10:10

omg I feel like this is a guy trying to get descriptors of women's underwear

When I was very slim a throng was the most comfortable thing to wear. Who wants all that extra granny pant material?

Really?

My thought is why does any want a stringy bit of material stuck up the crack of their bum?

And the hygiene implications don't bear thinking about: they must be disgusting when you take them off at the end of the day. Did you used to put them straight in the bin?

BringBackCatsEyes · 20/05/2026 10:29

Cutchemist · 20/05/2026 08:33

Oh I don’t want them to do that. Just to understand why they wear them

Why do you want to understand this?

MargoLivebetter · 20/05/2026 10:32

@Somethingbland my goodness, what is going on in your bum crack that you think you'd have to throw a thong out after wearing it once?!

Do you not clean yourself after using the bathroom?

The material ends up going up my bumcrack whatever kind of pants I'm wearing so I'm not sure what the difference is hygienically.

RosieandBluey · 20/05/2026 10:41

I prefer thongs during the day as I don’t like having a vpl. I don’t wear lace though, for the same reason. Just smooth ones. To sleep I wear boyshorts as I find them comfiest.

I thought it was general knowledge that wearing items such as thongs can be the source of vaginal infections because of the bacteria from the anus on the material travelling into the vaginal area.

I know that if you wear thongs there has to be scrupulous attention to correct hygiene procedures after defecating. And the general recommendation is not to wear thongs or tight underwear on a daily basis for health reasons.

Throwing out a piece of material that had been stuck up my bum all day would be my natural reaction were I ever to wear a thong.

Ffffff886 · 20/05/2026 10:43

Some people are not as sensitive to textures and textiles, have very neat, varicose vein free genitals and pubic hair or loose skin is not an issue for them. There is no friction when they wear tight or lace because their body is built different it doesn't chaffe or rub. Their pelvis is probably differently positioned to yours they dont get it bunched up as easily.

Really? I never find that comfy knickers go up my bum crack personally. That’s why I prefer them. Not for nothing are thongs known as bum flossers.

MargoLivebetter · 20/05/2026 10:46

@Somethingbland no, I've never heard that. Worn thongs for over 20 years and never had a vaginal infection!

Yes i clean myself. I still find the thought of thongs disgusting.

I'm struggling to understand why all your pants go up your bum crack. I've never heard of people having this problem.

I've worn thongs regularly for years and never had any kind of infection. Pretty rank to not pay "scrupulous attention to correct hygiene procedures after defecating" anyway, isn't it?
