I wear big comfy pants. I’d like to understand why people wear uncomfortable looking underwear

Is it for men? If so why wear it on a daily basis when you’re not having sex? If you lived on a desert island on your own would you still wear the uncomfortable itchy lace stuff? Aibu

I think thong wearers just dont have haemorroids or big labias

Shallotsaresmallonions · 20/05/2026 10:49

Somethingbland · 20/05/2026 10:47

Yes i clean myself. I still find the thought of thongs disgusting.

I'm struggling to understand why all your pants go up your bum crack. I've never heard of people having this problem.

A different body shape, I guess 🤷‍♀️

MargoLivebetter · 20/05/2026 10:49

I've just done a quick google, as I have never in all my years of wearing thongs heard about them being a health hazard and this came up:

"Thongs… friend or foe?
Whilst the thin strip of fabric on a thong may be sleek and discreet, some people think that these can lead to an increased risk of conditions like thrush, bacterial vaginosis (BV) and urinary tract infections (UTIs) like cystitis.
Contrary to popular belief, there’s no concrete evidence to suggest that wearing thongs is actually bad for your vulva and your health. A study from 2005* looked directly at string underwear and found that it doesn’t mess with the pH balance and the microclimate down there or even the friendly bacteria found on your skin. So, any worries about thongs causing chaos? Myth!
Another study from 2018** decided to tackle the question we’ve all wanted the answer to: do thongs lead to UTIs, BV or vaginal thrush? The study found no evidence to back up the idea that thongs can cause these issues, so that’s another myth debunked!"

So, I beg to disagree that thongs are a vaginal health hazard.

BarbiesDreamHome · 20/05/2026 10:53

Im sad youre you're assuming anything other than massive plain pants are uncomfortable and "for men". Do you realise how judgy and up on your high horse you sound?

To answer your question, all pants can be comfortable if they fit right. I wear high waist for high jeans as its a smoother line, low pants for dresses so i dont get the belly line and lace and thongs are is very soft and good for moving with you and not cutting in if you're being super active.

The only pants I don't have is Judgy Pants. Where do you get yours?

Somethingbland · 20/05/2026 10:54

Shallotsaresmallonions · 20/05/2026 10:47

I've worn thongs regularly for years and never had any kind of infection. Pretty rank to not pay "scrupulous attention to correct hygiene procedures after defecating" anyway, isn't it?

Well apparently there are specific instructions online for the benefit of thong wearers because standard hygiene practice aren't sufficient to guard against the possibility of infections.

Fair enough if you are a thong fan. I reserve the right to find them disgusting. Vive la difference.

MargoLivebetter · 20/05/2026 10:57

@Somethingbland but you are not just sharing an opinion that you find them disgusting, you are saying that they are a health hazard. Massive difference!

ThisCandidMintGoose · 20/05/2026 11:01

what makes you think lace pants or "nicer looking" underwear are uncomfortable? Just.. buy the right size? It's not hard 😂

Mine are so comfy I even wear them with tighter trousers or dresses where plain ones would problably be a better look. Who cares.

Big pants are very uncomfortable for me. On the other hand, sports bras are my absolute favourite, and I would happily live in them. Other people find them uncomfortable.

You are not morally superior because you wear what you find aesthetically looking (in your opinion, it's all relative) ugly pants.

nomas · 20/05/2026 11:01

I don’t find big pants comfortable, nor do I like thongs, Brazilian pants or shorts or high rise pants.

I only wear one specific type of knickers that cover my bum but don’t have hard elastic that digs into my thighs.

Somethingbland · 20/05/2026 11:01

MargoLivebetter · 20/05/2026 10:57

@Somethingbland but you are not just sharing an opinion that you find them disgusting, you are saying that they are a health hazard. Massive difference!

It's not just me saying they have the potential to cause infections!

The advisibility or not of regularly wearing thongs - and actually tight underwear in general - is a long standing and well known debate .

BauhausOfEliott · 20/05/2026 11:02

@SomethingblandYou’re on another thread today too making weird, angry judgements about women who wear ‘sexy’ lingerie. On that thread you seem to think they’re all vacuous and porn-addled and pandering to dodgy men. On this thread you’re telling women they’re unhygienic and weird.

Anyone would think you’ve got some serious issues around other women, because all I’m seeing is a weird internalised misogyny around women who don’t meet your very specific, pseudo-feminist ideals.

My suggestion to you is that you should perhaps find something more important to worry about than other people’s knickers.

Disturbia81 · 20/05/2026 11:04

I’ve never felt comfortable in thongs even as a teenager so I could never understand it, as I’ve got older I’ve just accepted we can all experience human bodies differently, what we like, what feels good to us. Like how we all have tastebuds but like different foods

ImthatBoleyngirl · 20/05/2026 11:05

Agix · 20/05/2026 09:17

I don't see the point in thongs. May as well not wear any underwear. They seem just for show, no real function.

I like big pants.

Thongs still cover the vulva, you just don't get a VPL. I find them comfortable, I dont even feel them.

Poppingby · 20/05/2026 11:07

I mean the clue is in the 'looking' part of your sentence isn't it? You don't get to tell someone else her knickers are uncomfortable if you're not the one wearing them!

I just really feel that people's underwear choices are a matter for them.

That is the lie that women have been fed since birth. Men don’t generally have uncomfortable clothing.

Women are encouraged to wear ridiculously uncomfortable stuff because it pleases the male gaze and we are lead to believe that comfortable = ugly.

Some people then feel they prefer uncomfortable, impractical clothing.

also heard that narrative from fake-concerned bitter people crying over poor girls feeling they have to wear uncomfortable sports bras and tight shorts at the gym. Newsflash, if we wear them, it's because they ARE more comfortable, not restrictive, and you are less hot.

Pretty much the female equivalent of what men wear.

Why does it sting so bad to know that many women happened to look good in the process, because they like the clothes or find them more comfy, and it has NOTHING to do with male gaze.

Pretty sure many gay women don't wear clothes based on local men's opinion.

Well do you know I was actually wondering why there are two threads about women's underwear started on MN today. I wonder if there is some agenda.

Perhaps you should look at why you are stalking my posts from thread to thread before you start pointing the finger at me for weird MN behaviour.

BTW I'm not telling women they are unhygienic. I am saying that thongs, at the very least, have the potential to be unhygienic. There is a big difference. And is a widely held view .

And perhaps you should be addressing your point about being obsessed with women's knickers to the OP's who started the threads rather than singling out individual posters who post on their threads

Absolutely this.

There’s a certain type of person on Mumsnet who seems to think that any woman who likes clothes, underwear, makeup etc is just a shallow fool making herself miserable to please men. Heaven forbid women might just want to express themselves through their style and have their own aesthetic preferences, eh?

The implied connection between plain/non-revealing clothes and moral/intellectual superiority is essentially the same message spouted by misogynist fundamentalist religions that oppress women. It’s Handmaid’s Tale stuff, frankly.

Electriceelslunch · 20/05/2026 11:14

I’m also a comfy pant wearer. I only bust out my sexy ones when I know I’m likely to be having some sexy time. I’ve never understood thongs. I used to wear them as a teenager cos I thought that’s just what all girls did but it was like having a permanent wedgy. I suspect the women who wear them wear them cos they like feeling sexy or something maybe?

oh, jealousy!

Of course, it all makes sense now 😂. Why else would anyone have an opinion on what other women are wearing.
😂
What's next? Black is acceptable but red makes us look like harlots? 😂

I’m not stalking anyone. Like you, I’ve seen two threads and posted on them. I merely noticed you on both because you’ve been noticeably weird, angry, judgmental and insulting across multiple posts on both of them.

Brokentoes85 · 20/05/2026 11:18

When I was a teen it was all the rage to wear thongs. I remember once my mate saying "my pants are going up my bum" I said but you wear thongs and she said "yeah that's the one thing I can't stand about them, they go up your bum" I think she thought they weren't meant to...

Dahliasgalore · 20/05/2026 11:20

I started getting all my pants and bra tops from Boody (soooo soft). I will now never go back and if they go out of business I will cry.

Pawpaw4 · 20/05/2026 11:22

Sloggi are my friend!

Turnitoffnonagain · 20/05/2026 11:32

People do a lot of stuff that I don't understand. Because everyone is different, and we can all choose what we prefer.

I couldn't care less what kind of undercrackers folk wear. It's a personal thing and nobody else's business.

Just do you, OP.

I've posted on a few threads this morning, not just ones about underwear - although why as a woman you think I don't have a right to a view on womens underwear is beyond me. Unless of course it's because my views don't chime with yours so I should just keep quiet?

What you have done, admirably, is demonstrate the advisibility of frequent name changes on MN. To stop other posters, such as yourself, stalking them.

Somethingbland · 20/05/2026 10:25

Really?

My thought is why does any want a stringy bit of material stuck up the crack of their bum?

And the hygiene implications don't bear thinking about: they must be disgusting when you take them off at the end of the day. Did you used to put them straight in the bin?

How bad is your hygiene that you would think that things need to be binned after one wear? Ugh.
