My favourite Greek yoghurt travels by refrigerated lorry all the way from Greece

Embarrassed to admit that I never thought about this before. My favourite brand was not available online this week and the substitute - also Greek’ - had travelled many miles overland through the Balkans, Europe and ferry etc - to reach me. Turns out that’s what my normal v delicious and well known branded yoghurt does every week, because it can’t be called Greek if it isn’t made, packaged etc in Greece. So I’m thinking, there must be a UK-equivalent Greek-style’ yoghurt that is just as delicious but without all the miles?

I like Marks greek style. no added sugar, just milk and cultures.

don’t people know how to read ingredients? Isn’t it obvious your vanilla flavoured yogurt contains something other than milk?!

by the same vein isn’t it obviously plain yogurt doesn’t contain anything else?

Thanks for this info - i buy Lidl greek yoghurt and just checked the ingredients and it just contains milk - i need one with live cultures it seems - i have a turkish supermarket I will check out later in the week.

I only eat Greek yoghurt because it's meant to be good for me. 0% aldi in the pink tub. Loads of food is imported so I'm not sweating the lorry miles.

What is added to Greek style yogurt. I have checked several and only milk / cultures show on the ingredient list. What is the crap you say they add? Which brands add this crap?

Is Fage Greek or Greek style?

I think that Greek / Greek style is thicker because it’s strained.

I’ve not been able to get Fage for weeks (Kent) so have been having Skyr instead. It’s ok but not the same!

I have the Lakeland yoghurt maker. I use it all the time as we have yoghurt nearly every day at breakfast. This comes with a strainer that you can use to make Greek yoghurt. Easy peasy.

(Australian and Californian wine doesn't count does it 😳)

Greek style yogurt is absolutely nothing like real Greek yogurt. It is such a shame about its carbon footprint.

Yes. I prefer the 10% & just have a little less. It really is as good at Total/ Yeo Valley in my opinion.

But after reading this thread I'm going to try straining natural yogurt. Will any plain yogurt do, or does ot need to be live?

It doesn’t make Greek yogurt. It makes Greek style yogurt.

Whole milk does give the best results.

My sister uses semi-skimmed but she then has to strain it to get a yoghurt that isn't totally runny, whereas I use whole and it doesn't need straining at all. Unless I want to turn it into Greek yoghurt

Lidl Greek style is lovely

I don’t know if it can only be found in the north, but my local supermarkets stock Lancashire Farm yogurts that do an amazing Greek Style yogurt at a very reasonable price.

'Greek style' is nothing like real Greek yoghurt. I should know, I lived in Greece for several years. The texture and the taste are very different. Total Fage is exceptional, but extremely expensive these days.
