My favourite Greek yoghurt travels by refrigerated lorry all the way from Greece

Embarrassed to admit that I never thought about this before. My favourite brand was not available online this week and the substitute - also Greek’ - had travelled many miles overland through the Balkans, Europe and ferry etc - to reach me. Turns out that’s what my normal v delicious and well known branded yoghurt does every week, because it can’t be called Greek if it isn’t made, packaged etc in Greece. So I’m thinking, there must be a UK-equivalent Greek-style’ yoghurt that is just as delicious but without all the miles?

That's not true, it's often made identically but not in Greece.

Greek style is just natural yogurt with thicker. Greek Yoghurt is strained and looks almost solid. They're very different.

Thank you for educating me about cream. I had absolutely no idea it was made from milk.

I will sound incredibly shitty now but what the fuck do they teach you people at schools in UK. Or reading things or basics. What

😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/05/2026 20:52

Longley Farm Greek Style yoghurt is nice, and made in W Yorkshire.

I was being sarcastic. Of course I know that cream is made from milk. Bloody hell.

Judging by the grammar and spelling in your previous posts, I wouldn't be commenting on UK education 🫠

A 280 page thread of people arguing about Greek yogurt. Peak Mumsnet .

Babybirdmum · 20/05/2026 21:14

This is also my favourite yoghurt and I noticed it was out of stock in Asda

The Yeo Valley Greek Recipe, NOT Greek Style, is very good.

This gets my vote too.

biggest difference is “Greek style” had less protein than actual Greek yoghurt.

the Yeo valley Greek recipe is the only one I’ve found that comes close.

Wonderknicks · 19/05/2026 19:22

This one

Also just started buying this -Yeo Valley Greek Recipe Strained - but the 0% fat version. It’s delicious - very thick, still creamy even though fat free, not too sour. 10g protein per 100g.
Much more sustainable, as made from organic British milk, in Somerset.

I used to love Fage or M&S actual Greek versions, but have noticed in short supply last few months - and just seems madness to transport so far.
Agree majority of “Greek-Style” is too runny and sour, including (confusingly) Yeo Valley Greek-style.

Fage at some stage changed its packaging to state produced in the EU from EU milk and “Greek recipe” - so seemingly no longer Greek, despite the branding!

Lancashire Farm Greek style tastes delicious, and is so thick you can practically slice it! Disappointingly low in protein though.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 21/05/2026 07:53

Another vote for Lancashire Farms. It’s so thick that I put it on toast as a labneh-style cheese.

I think you might be wrong.

If you’re opting for Greek yogurt because of its incredible health benefits, then do not choose a “Greek-style” yogurt thinking it’s the same thing. These usually contain cream, gelatine, gum blends, stabilisers, preservatives, milk solids and more, to thicken the yogurt and quicken the straining process

Most of this thread has been about why that quote is false 😆 just check some labels!

I can't make sense of why the Lancashire Farm stuff is so much lower in protein when it seems to be otherwise identical to Fage. It has no additional ingredients, and as far as I can understand it is strained. It's a puzzler.

I’m in SW London and can’t find it anywhere atm

I’m in West Yorkshire, can’t get it here either.

Gosh, thanks so much for the alert! I was just in Asda, checked the ingredients and bought a huge pot of 'Greek Style'. I had no idea and was still basing my buying on old info.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/05/2026 10:39

I noticed in M&S yesterday that they have Authentic Greek yoghurt, in 0%, 5% and 10% fat. £2.30 for 500g, in all fattinesses.

Marmalademorning · 22/05/2026 18:26

Well, I haven’t had real Greek yoghurt in years, so I bought a tub of Odysea from Sainsburys after work to see if if does taste nicer. I se to remember it did, but it’s been a very long time. Planning to have some for breakfast tomorrow. It was only £2.75 for a big tub. I would have thought it would cost more being the real stuff.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 23/05/2026 21:57

Wonderknicks · 20/05/2026 10:04

No, Yeo valley do both "Greek style" & "Greek recipe" which is strained. See my photo up thread yesterday. It says "strained" on the front of the pot.

Thank you, I do wonder sometimes why people make posts without checking facts first

Marmalademorning · 23/05/2026 22:26

Tried Odysea this morning. The 10% fat one, and it was lovely. The nicest Greek style one I’ve come across is Sainsburys, and Odysea is nothing like that. It was really thick, smooth and creamy, and not bitter at all.

HelenHywater · Yesterday 06:25

I tried the Aldi version yesterday - it wasn't very nice.

Words · Yesterday 06:38

You can make your own. Cheap yog maker from Lakeland, small pot of good quality natural non bio yog to start with and just shy of a litre of milk. UHT astonishingly, makes v good greek yog and doesn’t have to be boiled first. Leave to do its thi g for 8 hours, strain and there it is. Very good indeed. Reserve some from your first batch to make the next.

Wonderknicks · Yesterday 10:53

Or make it in a wide necked flask. I use my instant pot which has a yoghurt setting. I litre of UHT milk makes 500ml of yoghurt after straining.
