My favourite Greek yoghurt travels by refrigerated lorry all the way from Greece

Embarrassed to admit that I never thought about this before. My favourite brand was not available online this week and the substitute - also Greek’ - had travelled many miles overland through the Balkans, Europe and ferry etc - to reach me. Turns out that’s what my normal v delicious and well known branded yoghurt does every week, because it can’t be called Greek if it isn’t made, packaged etc in Greece. So I’m thinking, there must be a UK-equivalent Greek-style’ yoghurt that is just as delicious but without all the miles?

I’ve also been buying this one recently as the Fage has disappeared from my Sainsbury’s. It’s very nice and also cheaper.

Yes more than half price cheaper and nice and thick

Estate Dairy is what you're looking for.

Their yogurt is made in Cheshire I think. It's gorgeous, proper yummy yoghurt.

10% fat so great for kids and 9g protein so much better than a lot of the supermarket greek style ones.

This, a thousand times this. Estate Dairy Greek yoghurt is the stuff of dreams. At one point, they rationed it on ocado - you could only buy one tub at a time. Honestly, cut me and I bleed estate dairy. It's thick, delicious, perfectly tangy. Nothing added.

WotsitsAndLambrini · 19/05/2026 20:23

Rachel’s Organic Greek style set yogurt is thick and gorgeous.

Mithral · 19/05/2026 19:02

That's not true, it's often made identically but not in Greece.

The Fage one is much thicker and has more protein. That said, it costs a fortune so I don't buy it.

Another2Cats · 19/05/2026 20:26

Just to add to the list, Aldi do both Greek style yogurt and actual Greek yogurt (at almost twice the price).

Their Greek style yogurt is nothing to write home about but their actual Greek yogurt is really nice indeed.

Agree, and the Tim’s Greek Family Kefir is the only kefir I can eat, tastes great!

I have to go out of my way to Waitrose to get Tim's yoghurt. It really is the best one and all the flavoured ones are fab too. Agree that their kefir is the only one I like as well. Wish it was available in more supermarkets.

This is another myth, a few have thickners but the majority dont

Its just strained yoghurt that is made somewhere that isnt Greece

You may be right that most don’t contain thickeners - but if some do then it’s not a myth! Could just be the flavoured ones but I’ve definitely been caught out in the past with gelatine in my yogurt. I don’t buy ‘Greek style’ any more as I haven’t liked the texture of those I tried.

pandora206 · 19/05/2026 20:29

The key is checking the ingredients. The most nutritious yoghurt has milk and cultures, and nothing else. I'm a real Greek yoghurt addict, but this video has made me reflect:

Lancashire farms is great and contains no ingredients other than milk. I was making my own but in the end swapped to LFs as it was cheaper and no one could tell the difference.

Lancashire Farm Greek style yoghurt. I actually switched to Lancashire Farm natural bio yoghurt from Fagr and can’t taste the difference

Agree with this one, the dark blue full fat. It’s delicious

Its very popular but I can tell you from personal experience its more likely that people eat traditional yoghurt.

Fuck's sake 🙄

Yes, when I was living in Thessaloniki with a Greek boyfriend we did indeed mostly eat sheeps' milk yogurt in those flat shallow earthenware pots- so there you have it, that's an entire two people to add to your anecdata.

But, given that Total absolutely dominates the market- both in Greece and abroad- and that Total is made from cows' milk- you can't say that Greek yogurt is mostly made from sheeps' milk.

For a start, Greek yogurt is very very popular, both in Greece and abroad, and there just aren't enough sheep to go round!

Anyway, this led me to go down a rabbit hole and it transpires that Fage are building a multi kazillion Euro plant in the Netherlands, right next to all those cows. Whether they will have to brand Total "Greek style" yogurt for the British Market is an interesting point. They'll probably just write it in very small letters if they do.

No, don’t tell everyone about the Yeo Valley yummy yogurt. Everywhere will sell out, just like the Langley Farm cottage cheese 😂

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/05/2026 20:38

I’m amazed so many people (some of whom will have children) are so blasé about the environment

Fave Greek-style plain yogurt is Cyprofood which has a nice mild taste and isn't at all runny. Goes nicely with fruit in a way that other tarter yogurts don't quite.

I first picked it up because I misread its label and thought it said Cryptofood which made me laugh.

Well only in as much as Greek yoghurt can also have thickners in them, Ive got one in the fridge now, someone else posted another brand up thread. Both genuine Greek yoghurt from Greece. The thickner is cream, but its a thickner nonetheless.

BIossomtoes · 19/05/2026 20:50

Tims - we buy ours in Waitrose but there are other stockists. It knocks all the others out of the park.

The 'Greek style' stuff isn't as nutritious!

I make greek style - ie strained - and its just as nutritious as Greek

Its the straining , I strain overnight, at least 8 to 10 hours

A lot are thickened , you need to read the ingredients. Mine is milk and naturally occurring sugars

Why are you swearing, whats the point of that on a thread about yoghurt of all things?

Calm down.

I heat full cream milk in a large saucepan to 84 degrees, let it simmer at that temperature for 10 mins (you can omit this step), then cool it to 44 degrees. Alternatively use UHT milk straight from the carton. Add live cultures - usually a tablespoon of yoghurt from the previous batch or a spoonful of live yoghurt from the supermarket - and stir gently. Then it goes into either an electric yoghurt maker or an Easiyo flask. Any flask will do, with a towel wrapped around to keep the heat consistent. 8-10 hours later decently thick yoghurt. I then strain it through the strainer that came with my electric yoghurt maker or through a muslin cloth for a few hours. Lovely ‘Greek’ yoghurt. No additives and really very lovely. Sounds like a faff, but it quickly becomes second nature.

Also think about the poor sheep in Greece. I wouldn't buy it for this reason. Not exactly renowned for high animal welfare practices.

Eh? It’s not made with sheep’s milk. It’s cow’s milk.
