My favourite Greek yoghurt travels by refrigerated lorry all the way from Greece

Embarrassed to admit that I never thought about this before. My favourite brand was not available online this week and the substitute - also Greek’ - had travelled many miles overland through the Balkans, Europe and ferry etc - to reach me. Turns out that’s what my normal v delicious and well known branded yoghurt does every week, because it can’t be called Greek if it isn’t made, packaged etc in Greece. So I’m thinking, there must be a UK-equivalent Greek-style’ yoghurt that is just as delicious but without all the miles?

'Greek style' is what you want to look for.

ETA after completely missed that you said that. Ignore me!

Leopardspota · 19/05/2026 19:00

I just checked…my fave is the Waitrose one, also from Greece! But they do have a ‘Greek style’ made in Berkshire, so must try that!

pouletvous · 19/05/2026 19:00

same as champagne cant be champagne unless it made there

same with all European food produce

get Greek style yoghurt made in the UK. Supermarket own brand is usually ok. Check the ingredients list

CeciliaMars · 19/05/2026 19:00

The 'Greek style' stuff isn't as nutritious!

dairyfarmerswife · 19/05/2026 19:01

The Yeo Valley Greek Recipe, NOT Greek Style, is very good.

That's not true, it's often made identically but not in Greece.

Eucatastrophilia · 19/05/2026 19:02

There’ve been articles in various newspapers which show that ‘Greek style’ yoghurts, even the more expensive ones, just don’t have as much of the important stuff in them as actual Greek yoghurt. I’d been buying an expensive organic version with my veg box, but have switched back to actual Greek yoghurt for this reason.

MrsColinRobinson · 19/05/2026 19:03

I believe 'Greek style' is often not strained and manufactured in the same way that makes the real Greek stuff so good nutritionally, and also includes lots of added sugar.

If anyone knows of uk produced this doesn't apply to I'd be grateful to know of a nearer source.

Iheartmysmart · 19/05/2026 19:04

Greek style ones are always a bit runny and unpleasant. It’s either got to be proper Greek yogurt or nothing in my view.

Edited

“Greek style” yogurt isn’t the same though.

TheGrimSmile · 19/05/2026 19:07

Also think about the poor sheep in Greece. I wouldn't buy it for this reason. Not exactly renowned for high animal welfare practices.

DeathBanana · 19/05/2026 19:10

It’s really straightforward to make “Greek” yogurt. Make it the usual way then strain it through and old pillow case. Bingo. Yoghurt for life.

Oh christ. I’ve just realised I’m an actual yoghurt weaver 🧘‍♀️

Doyouthinktheyknow · 19/05/2026 19:12

Blimey, that never occurred to me. I have a skyr addiction and just checked, it is from Germany! That’s a lot of food miles🫣

Might have to have a rethink!

thisistheworstpossibletiming · 19/05/2026 19:14

I love Fage but the normal one has been unavailable in Sainsbury’s for a few weeks now

fantam · 19/05/2026 19:16

I have a great little yogurt strainer that is the biz. I put Aldi or Tesco etc. own brand natural yogurt (the runny stuff), in it, and leave it overnight. Beautiful thick creamy Greek Style yogurt in the morning. Don't knock it till you try it!

MrsKateColumbo · 19/05/2026 19:17

@deathbanana that's pretty impressive!__

ManyAardvarks · 19/05/2026 19:17

Was it Fage? We have been having difficulty getting hold of it too, if so. Sainsbury's now ony seem to do 950g pots which is enought to feed a small army.

"Greek style" is largely horrid and not nutrtionally or taste-wise the same.

I missing the point again aren't I? this is about food miles.

I love Fage, & wonder what’s going on with Sainsbury’s. I eat way too much of it so reckoned they were actually doing me a favour.

until I discovered Aldi’s own brand. That is nicer than Fage, cheaper but does have 10% instead of 5% fat. Can’t have it all.

cheekynamechang3 · 19/05/2026 19:18

Yeo valley is great- lovely and thick.

But also, Lidl own brand! It's in a massive blue tub and really thick and creamy.

Wonderknicks · 19/05/2026 19:21

Greek style is horrid & not as nutritious. Greek recipe from Yeo Valley is what you want. Or make your own & strain it.

Ineffable23 · 19/05/2026 19:21

I find the Greek style ones are never the same level of strained thick yoghurty goodness. I wish there was one that was as nice though!

Marmalademorning · 19/05/2026 19:22

Mithral · 19/05/2026 19:02

That's not true, it's often made identically but not in Greece.

I’ve never had a Greek style yoghurt that tastes anywhere near as nice as the proper stuff.

Tims yogurt is lovely and made in the UK by a Greek family.
