AIBU to want my sister to leave my local crows alone?

I have been feeding a group of crows near my house and we’re just getting to the point where they wait for me now in a morning and come very close. My sister has decided she wants in on it but I’ve told her to go and find her own murder as I’ve put in all the hard work with these ones. I told her there is a murder across the way on the field she could do and feed.

this morning I was coming home from shop and there she was feeding Russel from my murder. I shouted at her and she shouted that they’re not my fucking crows, at the point a woman walking a dog walked past and tutted so sister shouted that they’re not my crows and I was shouting at her. The woman just carried on walking but this was right near my house!!

AIBU to think she should just go and feed the others???

Seriously @AliceNotInChains , crows are very intelligent and Russeland Cheryl probably won't forgive you for the unconventional spelling.

Neuronimo · 19/05/2026 15:03

Crows imprint on humans and remember their faces don't they. Surely they would not be for turning 😆

Bring you shiny things? That's magpies, you wally! 🤣🤣🤣

Crows do it too... probably any corvid is gifting-inclined.

I can't believe Russel has cheated on you with your own sister! LTB.

(are you both 12?)

I can't believe it's taken me to page 4 to click "Russell Crow"

CDTC · 19/05/2026 15:05

You and your sister have such a weird dynamic in general that I'm almost convinced she's made up.

hotsoap · 19/05/2026 15:05

Hoping for a thread in classics

It is possible with all Corvids, you double wally!
PS OP, rooks also have black beaks. They do have pale nostrils though which crows don't. I rescued a young rook when I was a small child, he'd fallen out of the nest and damaged a leg and a wing. He lived with us for several months while he healed, then we set him free. he moved back into the local rookery and visited us for years.

@AliceNotInChains You need to write a book on your relationship with your sister, it’s hilariously unbelievable and would make a fantastic comedy show. I love your quick whit and ability to keep people going. I genuinely cannot tell whether you are serious or not. 😅
I hope Russell finds his way back to you.

I’m going to pet shop on Friday for wild bird seed but apart from that some fruit, nuts and dog food

Watch out for rats. We had to relocate a lot of bird tables because they came in numbers for the food.

I could not love this thread more. The Kia Ora reference really made it perfection, (only those of us of a certain age will get it).

Arlanymor · 19/05/2026 13:14

You don't own wild animals. And by the way, shouting at one another is really not good for the peace of wild animals. And you can't spell Russell properly.

Edited

To be fair there aren't really rules to name spelling.

Your sister is trying to rustle Russel.

Blorengia · 19/05/2026 15:11

This is an excellent thread. So much more uplifting than much of Mumsnet...
Go Crows!

Tabarnak · 19/05/2026 15:11

Oooh, what a carrion!

I need to know where you live so that I too can arrange to be 'walking past'

BeeHive909 · 19/05/2026 15:12

Russell is cheating on you sorry maybe it’s time to move on

notnorman · 19/05/2026 15:12

I’ve got two baby blackbirds I’ve been feeding with mealworms and they don’t even acknowledge me!!!

This is hilarious. It sounds like a plot from Midsummer Murders

That would be a very appropriate title for a crow-based detective series!

Are you think Russel's going to cheat on you with your sister?

So why are only magpies famous for it, then?

NameChangeMay2026 · 19/05/2026 14:58

Is this really real???

If so, crows must be very intelligent!

They are incredibly intelligent and can remember faces and wrongs done to them. I know it sounds like a wind up it’s really not.

PrettyPickle · 19/05/2026 15:15

I'm going to contradict myself now and whilst this is childish, I also get your point. You have put all the hard work in and she is now walking in to take advantage of it.

Your sister is jealous and incapable of putting the hard work in, she will not sustain it. The crows will know that. You just continue as you always have.

And here is some proper science, not folklore. A famous University of Washington study showed that crows can recognise a person’s face after one negative encounter and will:

  • Scold them
  • Mob them
  • Teach other crows to avoid them
They also remember positive interactions:
  • People who feed them
  • People who behave calmly around them
And they pass this knowledge to their young. So if you’re kind to crows, the whole neighbourhood of crows may treat you differently.

Russel Crow, Cheryl Crow, of course! 🤣🤣🤣

Conkersinautumn · 19/05/2026 15:20

Hilarious. Though I delight in the Tesco murder that not only know.my car but me now. Also it really pisses off the grumpy security guard (but the other ones are fine with it. Small joys.
