To ask what you’d cook for a vegan dinner party?

Hosting a vegan dinner party for 6 people. One of them is allergic to all nuts.

I’m not a great cook and stressed. What should I make that seems impressive? Just a main and dessert

I'd do a lovely Spanish butter bean stew with either rice or homemade bread, or a veggie paella or biryani. One pot, nice and easy.
Pudding I'd go with summer berries and Ben and Jerry's Bohemian Raspberry ice-cream.

BrieAndChilli · 19/05/2026 12:43

I would do either a veggie chilli with rice or a veggie tagine with couscous.

UninitendedShark · 19/05/2026 12:44

Curry or paella. I’d buy dessert things probably Swedish glacé and ready made brownies/ cookies/ some mixed berries

Bilbobagginsbollox · 19/05/2026 12:45

Lentil and mushroom “Shepherdess” Pie with sweet potato mash instead of regular, sautéed asparagus, and a green salad. Pie can be made before hand and then just heated up.

Peonies12 · 19/05/2026 12:45

I’d do a vegetarian chili with guacamole, salsa; vegan cheese, tortilla chips, rice. Buy vegan ice cream for desert, with fruit

Francestein · 19/05/2026 12:46

Risotto with vegan stock, sherry or red wine vinegar, onion, dill & beetroot with a wee blob of vegan sour cream or cream cheese on top of each bowl and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Or mushroom, garlic and rosemary version of the same thing with white wine vinegar.

Annabelle2025 · 19/05/2026 12:46

Vegan chilli with rice , vegan sour cream, guacamole etc. pudding - home made vegan brownies with raspberries and vegan ice cream on the side.

Helliephant · 19/05/2026 12:47

Stir-fry with fake meat because 9 times out of 10 all vegans get is chilli or curry on loop

7in1Pond · 19/05/2026 12:47

Indian- dhal, rice, bread, chana masala, aloo farsi etc etc.

RaininSummer · 19/05/2026 12:48

Indian all the way.

ButterYellowFlowers · 19/05/2026 12:48

Get tofu from a Korean market and cook in a pan with honey, soy sauce, ginger and a dash of ketchup and chilli flakes. I swear it’s lovely! Serve with egg fried rice with roasted root vegetables done in soya and white pepper.

Dessert? Mango coconut fool. Check that the person allergic to nuts it’s ok with coconut, it’s literally not a nut so they shouldn’t be but I find lots of nut allergy people refuse to eat it because of the name.

No fake meat. Horrible stuff.

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 19/05/2026 12:49

Vegan chocolate trifle for pudding. Takes 10 minutes to make and was voted best dessert at a massive vegan gathering I went to 😍

FunnyOrca · 19/05/2026 12:49

You could ask to move this to the vegan board before the usual group show up and derail it.

Brief is vegan, no nuts and easy to cook?

Starter - fennel and orange salad (easily sub almonds for pumpkin and sunflower seeds)
Main - spiced aubergine bake (just skip almonds… again!)
Dessert - chocolate cherry tart

There are a million recipes for the starter and dessert, I’ve provided links to what I think are very easy versions, but feel free to have a look around.

And even easier option could be ordering a meal kit from Green Chef. They have lots of vegan options and are similar to Hello Fresh etc in being friendly to people to used to cooking.

Fennel and orange salad | Jamie Oliver salad recipes

The flavours of this zingy fennel and orange salad are out of this world, with mint leaves, rocket, almonds & sherry vinegar also making an appearance.

I’d go for curry

Or tofu then.
But as you can see from this thread, not the endless cycle of Indian or Mexican

PersephoneSmith · 19/05/2026 12:50

I would do a mushroom curry, with sag bhaji, Tarka dal and pilau rice. Naan breads and popadoms, mango chutney and onion salad.
yum

poetryandwine · 19/05/2026 12:51

As the weather is getting warmer, I would do a vegetable tagine served over cous cous for the main dish, with pita breads and a couple of delicious Middle Eastern salads.

If a few people are not vegan, I might make a traditional yoghurt and olive oil dressing for one of the salads.

Something like a date, pineapple, plum or orange upside down cake (made with oil) and options of fruit sauce or vanilla ice cream.

Honey and eggs are not vegan

poetryandwine · 19/05/2026 12:53

Or just glorious figs for pudding if you can get them! Or chilled, thinly sliced oranges with Cointreau.

But fresh fruit has to be very good and very ripe to be suitable for a dinner party.

Agree. As a vegan, I eat one pots most days at home. I can guarantee I can make a better vegan one pot than a non-vegan. There’s no point serving chilli or curry to a vegan unless you are actually an excellent Mexican or Indian cook.

Also, I always advise non-vegans to avoid fake meats or cheeses as a lot are expensive and bad. Vegans will know which one or two they like and anything else is a waste of money.

boundarysponge · 19/05/2026 12:54

Also where are these Korean markets???

boundarysponge · 19/05/2026 12:56

Seven vegetables Moroccan style with lemon couscous followed by vegan brownies with berries is my suggestion.

Honey and eggs are not vegan

Oh, oops. You’re right lol. Swap the honey for maple syrup and take out the egg. Exchange for braised pak Choi and plain fried rice.
