To ask what you’d cook for a vegan dinner party?

Fueoe · 19/05/2026 12:29

Hosting a vegan dinner party for 6 people. One of them is allergic to all nuts.

I’m not a great cook and stressed. What should I make that seems impressive? Just a main and dessert

@StationJack I am sorry you have been disappointed in the past but still think it best to ask the vegan in question what they do or do not like rather than ruling out everything you do not like

Cathmawr · 19/05/2026 20:40

Butternut squash risotto or lentil shepherds pie are my fave vegan dinner party dishes 😊

FullCrimp · 19/05/2026 20:41

Breadcat24 · 19/05/2026 20:36

@fullcrimp pissed on cornflakes would be vegan I think

Piss is from an animal though 🤔

Breadcat24 · 19/05/2026 20:51

@FullCrimp
Vegan human urine products primarily fall into three categories: upcycled fertilizers, medical therapies (extracted hormones), and synthetic testing urines. Because human urine is a natural secretion, it is vegan as long as it is gathered with full consent and does not involve animal exploitation

StationJack · 19/05/2026 20:53

Are exclusively breastfed babies vegans?

Copy that!

Do you know why lots of vegetarians and vegans hate mushrooms? Is this documented in the literature somewhere I can reference? I am a vegetarian mushroom fan and did not realise.

I think mushrooms might just be overdone on menus. I have a colleague won't eat mushrooms due to mycelium intelligence though.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 19/05/2026 21:20

I eat mushrooms but only if you remove the peel and stalk, and cut them up quite small, then cook them very thoroughly.

Girlsjustwannahavefunno1 · 19/05/2026 22:09

Slowcooker daal.
Lentils (red) , coconut milk , frozen chopped onions , approx 2 tins of chopped tomatoes , curry spices, stock and garlic & pour it all in slowcooker , with a bit of water (bbc food has exact measurements and it is easily doubled /tripled ) .
Get own brand microwave rice and do a few packs and maybe some naan bread. Jobs a good'un.

gerispringer · 19/05/2026 12:58

Mushroom wellington
rosemary roast potatoes
broccoli / carrots other veg
sherry and mushroom gravy

Yes this! Best option I've seen so far (as a vegan of 10 years)

Of course, milk is freely given

I’d do a roast with a roasted cauliflower ‘steak’ or roasted aubergine in a miso sauce as the main, rosemary and garlic roast potatoes, swede and potato mash (cook ahead), vegan Yorkshire puds, make your own sage and onion stuffing with breadcrumbs.

Yum!

BarrellChested · 19/05/2026 22:28

A massive salad.

I make this all the time. I serve with sushi rice which has been seasoned with rice vinegar and pickled Cucumber. I do one half of my air fryer with tofu in breadcrumbs and the other half of the air fryer with chicken in breadcrumbs. You can cook the sauce ahead, and the rice and reheat. You can prep the chicken and tofu too and just whack in the air fryer when they arrive. Be generous with the oil spray.

Please make a proper dessert, not fruit or ice cream, they are so boring. Chocolate mousse is easy and quick, or a crumble with soy or oat cream.

If you need a starter how about soup? Easy to make in advance. I do a lovely tomato one. Roast tomatoes and garlic and onions for 40 minutes then add a tin of butter beans and the bean juice and some water and herbs and cook for another 15 minutes then take out of the oven and blend. Really easy and super delicious.

I make a really nice pasta, you just cook passata with garlic, herbs and onion powder and a bit of marmite, then at the end add in capers and chopped artichoke hearts. It's absolutely delicious and very simple. Do crusty bread with Naturli butter to go with it.

Screamingabdabz · 19/05/2026 23:07

Starter: bruschetta and anti pasti
Main: any nice pasta dish - lemon spaghetti upthread sounds nice. Garlic bread and salad.
Pud: vegan tiramisu

Mushroom wellington
rosemary roast potatoes
broccoli / carrots other veg
sherry and mushroom gravy

Second a roast dinner with mushroom wellington - makes it really special. Or mushroom and vegetable pie (add brown lentils to make it ‘meatier’) Pastry with vegan butter/spread is great.

Rice pudding with plant milk is really creamy tasting or apple and pear crumble and custard made with plant milks.

Dahliasgalore · 19/05/2026 23:22

Ok, thanks to this thread I just read all about the process of how some figs are pollinated by wasps 😳

Toomuchtimeagain · 19/05/2026 23:26

poetryandwine · 19/05/2026 12:53

Or just glorious figs for pudding if you can get them! Or chilled, thinly sliced oranges with Cointreau.

But fresh fruit has to be very good and very ripe to be suitable for a dinner party.

Some vegans (me) are funny about figs because of the dissolved wasps.

Toomuchtimeagain · 19/05/2026 23:48

Easy vegan dinner party

Caramelized onion tart with ready made puff pastry, Hasselback potatoes done in Rosemary and olive oil with lots of crunchy salt, salad.

M&S ready made vegan brownie warmed up, Swedish Glace vanilla ice cream, selection of red fruits

To make the tart slowly cook down more thinly sliced onions than you ever thought possible in a little bit of oil. Very low heat for a few hours. Tip into a dish and cover with a layer of ready made puff pastry. Supermarket ones are usually vegan. Oven until pastry is cooked
Score through lots of salad potatoes with 3 - 4 cuts but don't go right through. Leave unpeeled. Coat in olive oil, rosemary, pepper and sea salt. Also in the oven and probably put them in first as they take a bit longer.
Big mixed salad with seeds and beans for a bit of protein (would usually do a walnut, fennel and orange salad).

Helliephant · 19/05/2026 12:47

Stir-fry with fake meat because 9 times out of 10 all vegans get is chilli or curry on loop

@Helliephant , I would check that they eat fake meat before presenting it. I haven’t eaten meat for nearly 60 years and while I appreciate that recent vegans might appreciate something resembling what they’ve been used to I certainly wouldn’t. Fake meat turns my stomach. I’m made of beans and lentils. ☺️

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 20/05/2026 00:05

I'd probably do 3 or 4 Ottolenghi style salads, some nice bread/dips and booja book ice cream for dessert. Keep it casual.

I like roasted cauliflower with pomegranate almonds and tahini, date pitta and spinach salad, lentil or white bean salad, muhammara or romesco dips.

Meadowfinch · 19/05/2026 13:04

I have a good repertoire of recipes but I can only think of two vegan recipes that I would choose to serve at a dinner party - a good veggie chilli made with a mix of cubed veg & beans served in a fresh tomato & chilli sauce, and home made wholegrain bread.

Or a mushroom risotto, using expensive dried oyster mushrooms and fresh garden parsley to add lots of extra flavour. Even then, I'd struggle to serve vegan parmesan 😩

I'll never understand people who choose not to eat real cheese/milk/yoghurt. But then I used to live on a dairy farm and I saw daily the love and care the farm manager showed his herd of prize winning Friesians.

lol - you must know that Most dairy comes from hyper industrialised farms where the animals are treated utterly horrifically.

id honestly rather eat meat than dairy. At least it’s over for the animals once they’re slaughtered and they aren’t subjected to an endless living torture.

fretaway · 20/05/2026 00:07

I made this the other week:
https://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/squash-spinach-and-chickpea-filo-pie/amp/

We’re not vegan but the dc have food allergies, it was a total winner and disappeared in a flash!

If you fancy a hot pudding you could make apple crumble using dairy free butter, or use rhubarb if you wanted it to be more in season. Hot custard made with Bird’s custard powder and oat milk, or plant based vanilla ice cream.
