To ask what you’d cook for a vegan dinner party?

Hosting a vegan dinner party for 6 people. One of them is allergic to all nuts.

I’m not a great cook and stressed. What should I make that seems impressive? Just a main and dessert

I make this for dessert - so easy - you can also just make the filling and have individual desserts in ramekins. I buy cartons of coconut cream rather than faff around with the tins…!

One vegan chocolate tart on a plate

Easy chocolate tart

Perfect for a dinner party, this vegan tart has a crunchy digestive base and creamy chocolate filling made with coconut milk

lentils will replace minced meat in pretty much any recipe - so cottage pie, spagbol, lasagne (bechamel with plant milk), stuffed peppers etc. Need to 'beef up' the seasoning is all

Snowyowl99 · 19/05/2026 13:27

Mushroom bourguignon for main. Or cauliflower steaks with roasted veg and gravy
Starters...maybe pear and walnut salad or beetroot salad. Or lots of soups are vegan
For dessert trifle ...plenty vegan cream in supermarket. Or simply a selection of fruit..Strawberries etc with whipped vegan Greek yoghurt..alpro do a lovely one....and delicious green n black organic dark chocolate on the side

I have a good repertoire of recipes but I can only think of two vegan recipes that I would choose to serve at a dinner party - a good veggie chilli made with a mix of cubed veg & beans served in a fresh tomato & chilli sauce, and home made wholegrain bread.

Or a mushroom risotto, using expensive dried oyster mushrooms and fresh garden parsley to add lots of extra flavour. Even then, I'd struggle to serve vegan parmesan 😩

I'll never understand people who choose not to eat real cheese/milk/yoghurt. But then I used to live on a dairy farm and I saw daily the love and care the farm manager showed his herd of prize winning Friesians.

Perhaps you ought to research the cruelty involved in the life of a dairy cow. Artificially impregnated throughout their life, calves removed at birth amongst much anguish to mother and their offspring. Their udders artifical bloated to contain as much milk as possible. Please have a heart . Watch the documentary "Cow"

Guaranteed to make me want a cheese sandwich and a milkshake.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/05/2026 13:41

Why would you do this to yourself?

RationalIrrational · 19/05/2026 13:41

Mushrooms bourgignonne

Aibergines parmigiana

Butternut squash stuffed with lentil & roasted red pepper salad

Asparagus & green pea risotto

Gnocchi primavera or with spicy tomato & courgette sauce

Chickpea & broccoli tagine

i usually do a normal dish & substitute meat with breaded aubergine slices or butternut quash chunks.

Pudding - prob some sort of choc cake made with oil instead of butter & vegan ice cream, or fruit tart

Given that op might live nowhere near you that’s not that helpful. Where I live the nearest supermarket is 9 miles away. I’ve no idea where I’d find a Korean one.

There are 3 within 2 miles of my house so it’s reasonable to expect that other people also live near Asian markets. There was one near where I lived in Yorkshire, another in Lancaster and there are hundreds in London.

If it doesn’t work for OP then she doesn’t have to do it. It was a suggestion that would work for many people in the Uk… not sure why you’ve decided that your scenario is more common than mine or that it makes my suggestion pointless for everyone on planet earth.

So fucking rude

ButterYellowFlowers · 19/05/2026 13:44

boundarysponge · 19/05/2026 13:04

@ButterYellowFlowers that’s great but we live all over the UK and that recommendation is very specific

It was a suggestion. Not a command. Not every suggestion has to work for everyone on Earth.

mayflowers9 · 19/05/2026 13:47

NoctuaAthene · 19/05/2026 13:19

Bit harsh - you may not have an Asian supermarket near you but you can buy tofu, maple syrup, soy sauce at all major supermarkets and even some small ones?

For what it's worth if you're trying to impress/ please your guests in a 'dinner party' style as opposed to simply feed a crowd as quickly and cheaply as possible, I would also avoid one pot/ stew / curry /chilli type dishes - there's nothing wrong with them of course but many people will have that kind of dish very regularly if they cook at home and if you're not particularly skilled / confident as a cook they may be a bit meh/below average. I'd also avoid fake meats and cheeses as these tend to be more divisive. Personally my go to for something impressive but easy is always some kind of puff pastry concoction, a tart or 'en croute' with roasted vegetables, something like this https://topwithcinnamon.com/squash-caramelised-shallot-tart/ or perhaps use roasted Mediterranean style veg for a more summery feel. Buy ready made pastry (jus roll blocks are vegan), arrange the veg nicely on top and bake, you can't go far wrong. Serve with a nice green salad or steamed greens, crusty bread and perhaps buy a vegan garlic aioli for dipping?

Dessert I agree fruit is easiest, although also something like a fool or mousse is also pretty easy using coconut cream or soy cream?

https://theveganlunchbox.co.uk/quick-easy-vegan-lemon-mousse-dairy-free-dessert/

Again arrange it prettily with icing sugar and raspberries on top - all in the presentation!

Or here is a chocolate version

Edited

I think a vegan puff pastry with veggies is a great idea, or mushroom wellington. For sides and starters, maybe gazpacho and a roasted beetroot and lentil salad.

StationJack · 19/05/2026 13:53

No beetroot please, no mushrooms and no butternut squash.

CornishPorsche · 19/05/2026 13:57

I'd do a curry feast.

Chickpea curry (chana)
Aloo gobi
Tarka daal
Onion bhajis

Flatbreads
Rice

If you're not much of a cook, I can highly recommend Holy Cow sauces and cooking kits - they are really good and nice and easy.

wishingonastar101 · 19/05/2026 13:58

Homemade babaganouse and humus served with good pittas.
quorn chillie with avocados, vegan cheese, rice.
I agree with others - buy pudding.

You’re the one ragging at someone for making a suggestion on a food post. Because something doesn’t perfectly suit your life… so strange

leeksinmiso · 19/05/2026 14:06

Mexican!

Guacamole + salsa + vegan queso + vegan sour cream + chips

Chili

Roast veg / jackfruit tacos (other varieties here: https://www.delishknowledge.com/18-easy-vegan-taco-recipes-the-best/)

Churros (you can buy vegan ones from M&S or Ocado)

Mexican cinnamon-chocolate pudding (eg. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1012538-vegan-chocolate-pudding-with-cinnamon-and-chile)

StationJack · 19/05/2026 14:12

I don't mind the items I mentioned, it's their ubiquity I object to.

Lentils and beans are good.
Something like ful medammes on a bed of saffron basmati rice with a side salad and flatbreads would be easy and a bit different.

Not everybody likes curry or chilli, and curries aren't particularly easy if you don't normally cook them.

SpanThatWorld · 19/05/2026 14:16

My favourite vegan dessert is crumble made without butter.

Thetimeshop · 19/05/2026 14:17

Guacamole and different breads
Fajitas with faux chicken or tofu or a variety of veg if they're the 'non-faux-meat' types
Chocolate cake with vegan ice cream or cream substitute or toffee sauce for pudding.

OR
Soup or an interesting salad with beans, good quality dressing and olives, seeds etc (check for allergies)

A creamy butterbean dish (loads of recipes online)!

A lighter pud, maybe a traybake or something from here? https://zardyplants.com/lifestyle/no-bake-vegan-desserts/

I would personally love this challenge!

M&S do a decent range of vegan foods (although some look rather processed). The confectionery looks nice and the vegans I know all have a sweet tooth. You can check the ingredients online to see if the products contain nuts. M&S also has a vegan recipe section on their website but again you will need to look out for nut content. Avoid the obvious fake meat/dairy products as PPs have advised. I believe you can pre-order to pick up or have it delivered. And I would buy a posh olive oil too.

Because drinking milk once you're over weaning age (and from a different animal) is bloody weird.

Swiftie1878 · 19/05/2026 14:22

Vegan? Oh Lordy!
I’d buy it in, because even though I can cook I would be bound to mess up and include something I shouldn’t by accident. 😂
’Cook’ do some nice vegan stuff, apparently.

NancyBellaDonna · 19/05/2026 14:24

And I would serve a puff pastry (vegan) tart such as leek, with a home-made tabbouleh salad (using bulgur wheat).
