To ask what you’d cook for a vegan dinner party?

Hosting a vegan dinner party for 6 people. One of them is allergic to all nuts.

I’m not a great cook and stressed. What should I make that seems impressive? Just a main and dessert

Also where are these Korean markets???

Round the corner from my house? An Asian supermarket run specifically by Koreans.

gerispringer · 19/05/2026 12:58

Ohdearnotthisagain · 19/05/2026 12:58

AnnaQuayRules · 19/05/2026 12:58

I'd do a vegan tagine. I've got a really good recipe for one, I'll try to link

Here it is: Vegan tagine recipe - BBC Food https://share.google/2kYU8WMFrHxqohuAS

Given that op might live nowhere near you that’s not that helpful. Where I live the nearest supermarket is 9 miles away. I’ve no idea where I’d find a Korean one.

StationJack · 19/05/2026 13:03

Not risotto or chilli or curry. Make something that is normal food that happens to be vegan and nut free.

Roast dinner with a non-upf meat substitute.

boundarysponge · 19/05/2026 13:04

@ButterYellowFlowers that’s great but we live all over the UK and that recommendation is very specific

Meadowfinch · 19/05/2026 13:04

I have a good repertoire of recipes but I can only think of two vegan recipes that I would choose to serve at a dinner party - a good veggie chilli made with a mix of cubed veg & beans served in a fresh tomato & chilli sauce, and home made wholegrain bread.

Or a mushroom risotto, using expensive dried oyster mushrooms and fresh garden parsley to add lots of extra flavour. Even then, I'd struggle to serve vegan parmesan 😩

I'll never understand people who choose not to eat real cheese/milk/yoghurt. But then I used to live on a dairy farm and I saw daily the love and care the farm manager showed his herd of prize winning Friesians.

lifeisgoodrightnow · 19/05/2026 13:05

Look up tea steeped chickpeas. I promise it’s a mild Indian curry which tastes so incredible that when placed alongside meat dishes even meat eaters have preferred it.

Owlmoonstar · 19/05/2026 13:05

Ooooh I vote for Indian. So many vegan side dishes you can make to make it feel a bit more fancy.

With a mushroom curry of your choice.

Dessert- a huge pile of flapjacks arranged on a plate with some strawberries/raspberries or whatever you fancy to decorate.

notacooldad · 19/05/2026 13:07

Remember to check the alcohol is vegan.
I would
Welcome drink 🍸 French 75
Appetiser: Toasted sourdough topped with smashed sweet peas, fresh mint, lemon zest, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

Main: pan seared king oyster mushroom 'scallops ' served over a parsnip or pea purée, with charred asparagus spears and a saffron-infused white wine sauce

Dessert dark chocolate and avocado mousse decorated with broken white chocolate bits and raspberries.
All easy to make and the starter and dessert can be made in advance.

Surgeonsattheedgeoflife · 19/05/2026 13:07

Most vegans I know don’t eat meat substitutes (the sort that are supposed to represent meat) so I’d check that if you’re planning to serve that sort of thing.

StationJack · 19/05/2026 13:09

Chips and beans.

CurlewKate · 19/05/2026 13:11

Indian-easy because there are so many good dishes that aren’t specifically vegan, they are just nice food!

mondaytosunday · 19/05/2026 13:15

Hairy Bikers have a great cauliflower curry though for the life of me I can’t find the recipe! But something similar. We are meat eaters but I made this for a dinner party for a vegetarian and someone allergic to just about everything and it went down a treat. We didn’t miss the meat at all.

DeltaVariant · 19/05/2026 13:15

Veggie chilli if you take the time to caramelise some vegetables and use a good vegetable stock is easy and tasty! Can be left in a slow cooker for hours too.

OneBusyFinch · 19/05/2026 13:15

TheEyesOfLucyJordon · 19/05/2026 12:49

Vegan chocolate trifle for pudding. Takes 10 minutes to make and was voted best dessert at a massive vegan gathering I went to 😍

Oooh! Would you mind sharing the recipe please? @TheEyesOfLucyJordon

BeasKnee · 19/05/2026 13:15

Dhal or chilli as they are easy, tasty and we eat the vegan versions through choice anyway. I know lots are saying that's boring but honestly, if someone is cooking for you, you get what you're given. Not a dig at vegans by the way, just generally in life. There are friends I go to who serve the same meal every time. Honestly, I cook something similar at home and I prefer my version, but that's not the point. I'm asked over, eat food that someone has prepared with care for me, and we enjoy each other's company.

Don't stress too much about it, choose a one-pot thing if you aren't that great a cook rather than forcing yourself outside comfort zone because you want to impress. Everyone will enjoy it

Bowling4soup · 19/05/2026 13:16

Make a vegan brownie served with Swedish glaze vanilla ice cream

Bit harsh - you may not have an Asian supermarket near you but you can buy tofu, maple syrup, soy sauce at all major supermarkets and even some small ones?

For what it's worth if you're trying to impress/ please your guests in a 'dinner party' style as opposed to simply feed a crowd as quickly and cheaply as possible, I would also avoid one pot/ stew / curry /chilli type dishes - there's nothing wrong with them of course but many people will have that kind of dish very regularly if they cook at home and if you're not particularly skilled / confident as a cook they may be a bit meh/below average. I'd also avoid fake meats and cheeses as these tend to be more divisive. Personally my go to for something impressive but easy is always some kind of puff pastry concoction, a tart or 'en croute' with roasted vegetables, something like this https://topwithcinnamon.com/squash-caramelised-shallot-tart/ or perhaps use roasted Mediterranean style veg for a more summery feel. Buy ready made pastry (jus roll blocks are vegan), arrange the veg nicely on top and bake, you can't go far wrong. Serve with a nice green salad or steamed greens, crusty bread and perhaps buy a vegan garlic aioli for dipping?

Dessert I agree fruit is easiest, although also something like a fool or mousse is also pretty easy using coconut cream or soy cream?

https://theveganlunchbox.co.uk/quick-easy-vegan-lemon-mousse-dairy-free-dessert/

Again arrange it prettily with icing sugar and raspberries on top - all in the presentation!

Or here is a chocolate version

Butternut Squash & Caramelised Shallot Tart - Izy Hossack - Top With Cinnamon

I love all the curries!
Choose one for the main.

Love Nigella's Dark and Sumptuous Vegan Chocolate Cake with rasberries and vegan cream.

Large baked mushrooms in olive oil and herbs with sour dough for starter.

Vegans are objecting to the cruelty involved in dairy farming - that calves are immediately removed from their mothers and fed milk substitutes so that all the milk goes to the dairy industry.

I’m pleased to say that the numbers of ‘calf at foot’ dairies are slowly rising.
