To ask what you’d cook for a vegan dinner party?

Hosting a vegan dinner party for 6 people. One of them is allergic to all nuts.

I’m not a great cook and stressed. What should I make that seems impressive? Just a main and dessert

YABU. It is not an AIBU question.

I'd provide my DFiL's Iman Bayeldi, which is wonderful, but quite time consuming. His was a Cypriot version of a Turkish classic.

Hellometime · 19/05/2026 16:02

Deliciously Ella bean shepherds pie topped with sweet potato.
I also do a Mexican bean chilli thing and top with tortilla chips (and cheese but omit if vegan) could add avocado and salad on side.

Ottercave · 19/05/2026 16:02

Just bear in mind that if you do do a curry or chilli not every vegan likes/tolerates spicy food.
I've had this on many occasion eating out and spicy is the only choice on the menu.

@Thetimeshop

i personally prefer to use natural products like dairy rather than those with a long list of ingredients. Fair enough if you don’t use substitutes but I find it odd personally to describe yourself as vegan or vegetarian then eat fake versions of the products you are shunning. We all are allowed choice, mine is to eat naturally and locally where possible, meat, veg, pulses and a little dairy (doesn’t actually agree with me)

I don't use 'milk substitutes' personally (I don't eat cereal for example so not much requirement) as I try to eat naturally myself and most breakfast cereals take a lot of processing before they're edible.

But is it really a substitute? Sometimes it is just 'I don't like black tea so I'll put this (insert liquid) in it. In some countries (some parts of Spain for example) this has been the norm for years. If I eat a bean burger or a vegetarian sausage the word 'burger/sausage' refers to the shape, no animal is burger or sausage-shaped. They're just foods.

For some, It's more so that a burger made from a dead animal is contributing to a lot of suffering, hence they decide to stop eating it. Not because they didn't like the taste of the convenience of a meal that's essentially a sandwich. I don't find that odd. 'I don't want to eat an animal part but I like burgers, I'll have this one that has a similar texture/taste but isn't causing that suffering. That isn't odd to me at all.

I can't see anything 'natural' about suckling on a bovine either. Maybe out of necessity but then there's a lot I'd eat out of necessity even cauliflower.

Sorry for thread derail OP!

StripyShirt · 19/05/2026 16:57

Don't overthink things - we don't all eat weird stuff!

You could do worse than thinknof wjat you'd make non-vegans and then think of something to replace the animal stuff with.

Japanese or Chinese style could be a refreshing change.

Tips:
Mushrooms or brown lentils are great mince substitues, and are good in their own right
Tofu is always good and is available from virtually every supermarket.
Many vegans don't like fake meat.
Many people don't like curry.
Vegan cheese is variable.
Swedish Glace ice cream is lovely 🙂

Hillarious · 19/05/2026 17:07

Google Meera Sohda’s Mushroom and Tofu Bulgogi in the Guardian’s Feast magazine. That is excellent. You can swap out the tofu for beef if anyone is insisting on meat, but hopefully it’s not an issue.

Bosh! Sweet and Sour Crispy Tofu is rather good too.

Certainly, avoid fake meat.

101Nutella · 19/05/2026 17:39

Nachos with guacamole, salsa. You can make a cashew based ‘cheese sauce’ for the other depending on the allergy type. Pick de gallo, - all can be prepared ahead . Serve with margs.
then lentil and bean chilli, with rice,
then Churros for dessert - I think a lot of them can be vegan any way. Same for choc sauce.

Or just glorious figs for pudding if you can get them! Or chilled, thinly sliced oranges with Cointreau.

But fresh fruit has to be very good and very ripe to be suitable for a dinner party.

A lot of vegans won’t eat figs.

Soontobesingles · 19/05/2026 18:14

Everyone on this thread not realising 90% of vegan dairy alternatives are made from nuts…

TofuTuesday · 19/05/2026 18:24

poetryandwine · 19/05/2026 17:57

Thank you.

Sorry. I didn’t want to rubbish your idea, cold fresh fruit would be great, I wish more people would offer it, even with vegan cream. It’s just a bit of a niche issue about wasps and figs.

FullCrimp · 19/05/2026 18:27

I would do a nice rich mixed bean and mushroom chilli with home made guacamole and some grated cheese on the table for any non-vegans to add on top if they want it.

for pudding maybe a vegan brownie with coconut ice cream or something like that?

my partner would probably do a tofu and brocolli stir fry with chilli and basil.

Many, many vegans and vegetarians detest mushrooms.

Breadcat24 · 19/05/2026 18:49

On the basis of the many posts not liking spice, mushrooms etc maybe ask vegan friend if there is anything she/he doesn't like?
I have some sympathy as my poor vegetarian friend only ever got the option of goats cheese tart in restaurants through most of the eighties

Any veggie dish that doesn’t involve dairy or honey. I’ve cooked Christmas dinner for a vegan for years on that simple principle.

or eggs.

This without the yoghurt

to die for with some flatbreads

Came on to say this as I’m eating it right now!!!

Beetroot, risotto, mushroom, butternut squash, or goat's cheese.
Every menu unless you go to a restaurant that does a certain cuisine.

Often there will only be one starter and one main and they'll both be mushroom or goat's cheese.

venusandmars · 19/05/2026 19:46

I love Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall's 'Much More Veg'. Butternut Squash with chickpeas and spiced apricot dressing is excellent.

OneNewEagle · 19/05/2026 19:49

Tagine, curry, chilli avoid as it’s all people think you eat. Also no fake vegan stuff as we all only like one or two and don’t eat them that often (I’ve been a vegetarian over 40years).

keep it very simple. So lemon spaghetti (omit the cheese). So you need pasta, fresh Lemons, olive oil, basil. Completely delicious. Serve with either massive green salad or green veggies, tastes wonderful with asparagus. Looks lovely due to the colour and smells nice too. Crusty bread with (vegan) marg to bulk it up. We have it as a special treat meal.

i love tropical fruit so I’d probably do that as a dessert. You could do it as a big fruit platter and if you wanted to a hot dark choc sauce or choc vegan tart to go with it or some biscuits.

venusandmars · 19/05/2026 19:49

Or Google all the vegan Christmas dinner options. You'll find some delicious showstopper dinners that are miles away from veg chilli or curry.

ah well that’s my cornflakes pissed on then.

Breadcat24 · 19/05/2026 20:36

@fullcrimp pissed on cornflakes would be vegan I think

StationJack · 19/05/2026 20:36

I don't detest mushrooms but I wouldn't choose to eat them.
I don't like pastry either so the mushroom wellington wouldn't be great.

I don't dislike them but I wouldn't be thrilled.

The meals suggested seem to be a bit what people think vegans like, which is why we get the same dishes on every menu.
