To ask what you’d cook for a vegan dinner party?

Hosting a vegan dinner party for 6 people. One of them is allergic to all nuts.

I’m not a great cook and stressed. What should I make that seems impressive? Just a main and dessert

What you are saying here is for the very few. The dairy industry is incredibly cruel. These cows have a horrendous existence. The dairy industry subjects cows to a lifetime of forced impregnation, separation from their offspring at birth , and physical exhaustion. As a female i feel so sorry for them. .imagine being continuously forceabily impregnated., pumped full of hormones so your breasts are as huge as possible to hold more milk. Then you give birth, baby taken again and you are impregnated again

I know a lot about it due to work i was involved in. Don't be fooled that they live a pleasant existence, it's hell on earth for them .

@SpryTaupeTurtle , It has nothing to do with this thread.
Why should I call the poster out? I know plenty of dairy farmers and their cows aren't maltreated.

Ah right. You know plenty of dairy farmers and their cows aren't mistreated. That's completely irrelevant to the ones that are and live miserable lives. There are reasons vegans don't eat dairy.

Or just glorious figs for pudding if you can get them! Or chilled, thinly sliced oranges with Cointreau.

But fresh fruit has to be very good and very ripe to be suitable for a dinner party.

Figs aren’t usually vegan.

Why would you do this to yourself?

Bore off. Get some imagination in your cooking. Perhaps eat a vegetable now and then.

Eh?

https://www.veganfoodandliving.com/features/are-figs-vegan/

Are figs vegan?
Some vegans choose to avoid certain types of figs due to their unique pollination process that involves a mutualistic relationship with specific types of wasps.
During the pollination process, the body of the pollinating wasp is broken down by a protein-digesting enzyme inside the fig.
As a wasp has died in this process, some people argue that figs are not vegan. Others counter that it is just a part of nature, and doesn’t really constitute exploitation of the wasp.
While the idea of consuming wasps may be off-putting to some, it’s important to recognise that the fig fruit itself does not inherently involve the exploitation or harm of animals.

Why aren’t figs vegan? My fig tree produces lovely fruit, shouldn’t I be eating them?

Some vegans believe that figs are vegan. Others don't. Particularly the wasp pollinated figs.

I would make it as easy as possible on myself and find some vegan food that is easy to cook in the oven, microwave or airfryer.

As I said previously on the thread both Aldi and Lidl have very decent vegan ranges.

One of my favourite vegan meals is vegan sausages, peas and mash You can also get vegan gravy.

You can also buy vegan pies. Linda McCartney do them but Morrison also do their own version. Aldi did as well but think they were just for Veganuary

Tesco also have a decent vegan range. The wicked kitchen range is good. They also do their own plant based range. Wicked kitchen do a very nice vegan macaroni cheese

You can also get food like bao buns. Aldi do their own brand but there are bigger brands as well

You can also get vegan sushi from lidl.

You could also buy some vegan mince and make a vegan spag bol

MrsSchadenfreude · 20/05/2026 15:49

I’d go Central European and make a slow cooked mushroom goulash with sides of lecso (fried peppers, onions and garlic), red cabbage and mash or potato kugel. I’d have dips - Romanian aubergine salad, beaten beans with pitta or toast to start. And a chocolate orange cake for dessert, maybe with an orange sorbet. For added protein you can add white beans to the goulash.

StationJack · 20/05/2026 15:50

The Plant Chef range from Tesco is good. Check if it's nut-free.

It's a damn sight easier and cheaper than making a meat course for lots of people. Or having to cater for vegans AND meat eaters.

@ToomuchtimeagainJust out of interest, what are the wasps dissolved by?

Natural enzymes in the fig dissolve the wasp so by the time you come to eat it the wasp has essentially been fully absorbed into the fig.

It’s forbidden to give dairy cows hormones in the UK and the EU.

Jamie Oliver online has a recipe has a lovely recipe for a butternut squash and sage risotto that I cook. I'm sure you could find a vegan parmesan substitute.

Apparently figs grown in the UK are not pollinated by the fig wasp as they cannot survive in the UK climate. I cannot tell you what a relief that is.
