I know it’s his son too and he can call him what he likes but after months of carefully choosing the perfect name together which also has its own well known abbreviation I do feel a little miffed that he has taken to calling him by the first letter of his name.
The letter is also commonly a shortening of a completely different name altogether.

I do it, everyone has a nickname. YABU

My son is also a Joseph. He has many nicknames JJ Joe, Joey. Monkey. The only person who uses his actual name is my dad. Even school call him Joey.
Is it really a big deal? As he gets older and goes through school his name will get shortened anyway.
My eldest has the nickname E because that's what her sister called her when she was learning to talk and it just stuck.
I think your husband can call him what he wants and so can you.

The thread has reminded me, my best friends’ parents gave both her and her brother short names that (so they thought) couldn’t be shortened. Hers is two syllable and his is one. They’re both common diminutives of longer names.

Absolutely everyone calls my friend by the first letter of her name.

Nicknames happen, and when like the OP’s they’re out of affection, and if the recipient doesn’t mind, then there’s no harm. It’s THEIR name, not yours.

A school friend’s parents did this. They figured there was no way to abbreviate Fleur.

We called her Floral.

My sister won't let anyone abbreviate her sons name. She has stuck to it from day one. If it bothers you I'd say it to DH.

My brother was ALWAYS called by his full name within our family, let's call him 'James' One day when he still lived at home his work called and asked if 'Jim ' was available. My DM was 'im sorry there isnt a Jim here ! Do you think it might be James you want?'

Of course it might/ probably will happen. He is 6 now. My own son is 3 and will not accept a very common nn for his name. If I call him it he says 'no my name is x'
So while we might choose the name, they aren't ours.

When I was about 12 and landlines still existed I called a friend and used her nn. Her mother told me to use her correct name, she is not a dog. 😯

I can understand why it annoys you @harvestingsomewarmthand it would annoy me too.

If his name began with any other letter and he was shortening it I don’t think it would be an issue. But he is literally calling him by a different name!

Why call him Jay and not Joe, same syllables so it’s not like Jay is easer/shorter.

I have about 20 names for my son, and sometimes i use his real name.

Same for my daughter. She gets called "dummy," "snickerdoodle," "me love," etc. I'm surprised she even knows what her real name is, actually.

SALaw · 19/05/2026 23:44

That would wind me up too but then I hate when people email or text me “Hi S”. S?!!! I have a name!

My brother is Michael. We've only ever called him Michael. Friends, coworkers, etc., usually default to calling him Mike. People just shorten names.

YANBU. I find it highly irritating when my children's names are shortened even to the correct abbreviated version. I call them by their full name. People always say oh do you call them x, y or z. No!!! I call them their name 😂

There are "correct" abbreviated versions? I didn't realise there were rules. I once knew a Christopher who went by Toph. Unusual I thought, possibly unique, but not "incorrect". Do you consider Peggy, a well-established nickname for Margaret to be incorrect? Or Sandy, for Alexander (or Sandra maybe)?

And that doesn’t strike you as even a little bit of a dick move? When people ask her “Can I do….?” does she say “You can, but you may not?”
