I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing

This thread has taught me something I didn’t know - that child marriage (ie 16) is still legal in parts of the UK.

The IOM isn't part of the UK, hence it's own laws and why it's an international tax haven.

Scotland is though.

Badbadbunny · 17/05/2026 13:54

@Pieceofpurplesky

The difference is the marriage which is a traveller tradition which would not allow sex before marriage.

You're deluded if you think Irish travellers don't have sex before marriage!

FernFaery · 17/05/2026 13:53

This. It’s not the same as a regular pair of 16 year olds getting married. This is her culture. They probably won’t end up divorced. Her parents did the same.

Doesn’t mean they will be happy.

ThejoyofNC · 17/05/2026 13:49

So much bullshit on this thread.

I would correct people but what's the fucking point. Think what you want about gypsies and travellers, we couldn't care less.

Enjoy your ignorance.

Enlighten us then.

Explain why children of both sexes rarely stay in education until the statutory age of 18 and what you think is good about that.

Explain why girls are taught to believe that cleaning and cooking are more important than anything else, and why you think that's good.

Explain why your community celebrates a 16 year old girl, who should be taking GCSEs, getting married, and why you think that's good.

If we're all so wrong, please clarify.

I was reading a thread on here from somebody who settled down in their late 30s who wasn’t happy the other week.

They should also explain why they don't think the laws of the country in which they live should be abided by?

It's normal within the traveller community.
It's also none of your business.

Child marriage is none of society's business?

pinkyredrose · 17/05/2026 13:57

GinaandGin · 17/05/2026 13:37

Child protection is everyones business.
Children being forced to finish their education early is a safe guarding issue.

16 isn't a child. A minor yes but not a child. You can work full time and pay tax at that age.

ThejoyofNC · 17/05/2026 13:57

lottlecat · 17/05/2026 13:53

If you want to correct and educate people, please do. I would welcome a reasoned discussion. The fact is there never is one and all we get is defensive posts and ‘this is bullshit’ comments. I can only assume this is because you don’t have a sensible point to put forward. I’m happy to learn, what I have learned so far isn’t good and those who disagree can never say why or how things are not as we think.

Okay, no problem.

Getting married at 16 is NOT normal these days in gypsy/traveller culture. They have faced a lot of criticism from their own kind. Venezuela's grandfather has been very vocal of his disapproval.

We absolutely still get married younger, but not that young.

As for all the nonsense about women being slaves, it is of course false. At least 50% of our women work these days. Isn't it amazing that they have the choice to be a SAHM? I know many women would love to have the option but don't.

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:15

Are you a traveller? If not then do not comment on other cultural traditions.

I think it reasonable and understandable that people will comment on the wisdom of a 16 yr old getting married even if it happens as a tradition/cultural practice and cultural practices do evolve and change over time .
Having said that, i hope these young people are happy with their choices.

Overtheatlantic · 17/05/2026 13:59

I don’t care if it’s normal in the traveller community but I do care that no one is ever allowed to criticise travellers. Why? Even when their actions are reprehensible people seem terrified to say anything or on MN they get shouted down.

Can I ask (sensitively) is there a disconnect in the figures you just produced and whether said travellers ‘travel’ or whether they live in a house?

Well nowadays they can work, but they are legally obligated to be in some form of education as well until 18. So no, they can’t just go and work unless it’s something that can be classified as education as well.

Because the UK school system is an absolute pit.

Cooking and cleaning are important.

Why shouldn't they be celebrated?

You don't want anyone to "enlighten" you. You just want to share your prejudiced views.

They are considered a child by the UN Convention ofn Childrens Rights (which is against marriage of U18s)

MyFellowScroller · 17/05/2026 14:01

Like one or two others I thought all the home nations had agreed to 18. Any comments on Scotland's decision. I remember there was debate. Was this the Salmond years?

So what age are they leaving school? And I mean boys and girls.

And if the education system is poor then do they consider private schooling?

Housework isn’t what I would call important, but is it seen to be a female responsibility?

JLou08 · 17/05/2026 14:02

lottlecat · 17/05/2026 13:13

Normal doesn’t mean ok. Do you k ow how women are treated in these communities? It’s not what I would want for my Daughters.

I think plenty of people from other communities wouldn't want their daughters exhausted from working full time and spending most of their wage to pay someone else to look after their children.

FernFaery · 17/05/2026 13:58

I think children eg under 18s should not be married.
16 year olds should be getting an education not a wedding ring.

Usually this would be a pretty uncontroversial opinion but suddenly it's different because it's a celeb family with a funny reality show.

Would you make the same comment sbout an arranged marriage at 16 within the muslim community?

I would yes. I don't believe that anyone should marry at 16 in this day and age. The majority of teens just aren't mature enough.
