I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

OP posts:
myislandhome · 17/05/2026 15:21

Why are we mixing up a woman's choice to be a SAHM with 16 year old children getting married?

I think Venezuelas life sounds nice.

She has the added benefit of her father being a millionaire to fall back on.

She is with someone she loves.

If it all goes tits up , her dad will bail her out. She knows that

And the last century didn’t happen. She’s relying on a man for her own existence.

Samysungy · 17/05/2026 15:21

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 15:18

In the Isle of Man, you can vote and pay taxes at 16.

Absolutely you can as you can do in the UK. However, she is still not a woman....no matter how much tax is paid or work she does!

As someone who grew up with travellers in the community this is completely true. They were gone from school after the holy communion and it's well known that a huge amount of the men are thugs. Why do you think there are so many boxers? Bare knuckle boxing is huge.

Not so much nowadays though..yes in the older travellers but I can assure you it's not so much now..they go to school until theyre 18 now, they're in school with my girls, doing A levels here in Ireland, they don't get treated as bad

Maaate · 17/05/2026 15:22

I do think it's hilarious that some are romanticising the traveller lifestyle for women as some kind of trad wife dream

Under his eye

And the last century didn’t happen. She’s relying on a man for her own existence.

And thats her choice if she wants to do that.

The ultimate freedom for women is to be able to choose whatever they want.

I remember a woman saying to me once "I know women have fought for our right to work, and Im a big believer in womens rights, but when I think about it - what I really want to do is stay at home with my baby, while my husband works"

We don't do pensions.

Many gypsy women work.

Sadly a lot of them don’t make it to pension age.
There is horrendous suicidal epidemic throughout the community too, family call-outs due to social media and addiction too.

Yep 100% the men are thugs and cause no end of problems in my area, a child getting married at 16 is not normal tradition or not

That's a choice for women to make, not children.

It really is quite remarkable that in any other circumstance, if a poster was worried about their 16 year old daughter a) going out with a 19 year old and b) wanting to marry him, replies to the OP would be all over SAFEGUARDING ALERT, call the police, dont let her out, etc etc etc

But because this is apparently 'cultural', it gets a pass

Really?

Exactly this. Red flags

I am sure she is far wealthier than him. She probably has millions in a jewellery box.

hotsoap · 17/05/2026 15:25

well, at least she got married. Imagine the 1000s British teenagers getting pregnant without a proper plan in place

Ottersideofthebridge · 17/05/2026 15:25

myislandhome · 17/05/2026 15:11

I have choice. You know what gave that to me?
Education.

But the fight was for choice, it wasn't a fight to look down on women who might prefer to remain in traditionally gendered roles.
There are many routes in life, different routes work for different people. Education is an utter battle for some children and not the making of them, a return to more vocational training at a younger age would be beneficial for some.
There's so much snobbery on MN for those who are not seen as living typical middle class lifestyles.

kscarpetta · 17/05/2026 15:25

Her parents have helped make the choice for her. They have given her their consent to get married.

Why do you care what she does, if she is happy and it is a normal age to get married in their culture

Yes that happens a lot on mumsnet.

Some English people dont seem to know that so many things are different all over the UK.

Age to marry is only one of them.

Age to marry in England is 18
In scotland is 16
Isle of man is 16

Some English people don’t seem to know that so many things are different all over the UK

What has things being different all over the UK got to do with the Isle of Man?

Lemonfrost · 17/05/2026 15:29

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:12

It's normal within the traveller community.
It's also none of your business.

Don't be silly. This entire event has been monetised, publicised and designed for public consumption.

hotsoap · 17/05/2026 15:25

The UK teenage pregnancy rate is about 13 per 1000 pregnant women. It's fallen by almost 70% in the last 25 years, and now is low, and still declining.

Yeah maybe in uk but in Ireland it has changed loads over the years now thankfully and Girls and boys get better education and definitely women get treated loads better, obviously there's still some old school

Most are pregnant because an adult caused them to be - 80% of teen pregnancies are caused by men.

When looking at this case, she too will likely become a child pregnant to a man soon and she will become part of that 80% too.

Its a very apt question. Why on earth do you care what she does, if her own parents approve of it.

As a poster wrote, the snobbery on here can be shocking. Anyone who deviates outsidr the norm is looked down on

Do you approve of 13 year olds getting married , if their parents approve and it’s their culture?

No because that girl would not be the legal age, obviously.

16 is the legal age to get married in the Isle of Man.

Are you saying that the law is wrong then?
