I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

She is from a traditional.traveller community. It's very normal

Children getting married isn't normal or acceptable.

kscarpetta · 17/05/2026 15:34

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 15:30

Its a very apt question. Why on earth do you care what she does, if her own parents approve of it.

As a poster wrote, the snobbery on here can be shocking. Anyone who deviates outsidr the norm is looked down on

Why do I care about fox hunting? I'm not a fox.
Why do I care about women in Afghanistan? I don't live in Afghanistan.
Why do I care about abortion rights? I'm not pregnant.
Why do I care about child marriage? I'm not a child.

Most people are able to care about things that don't directly affect them.

She is not a child and she is of legal age to get married.

It's strange how people think the laws are wrong. Sure you can get married at 16 in Scotland aswell

InstantlyBella · 17/05/2026 15:34

I cannot believe that people from a country that operates grooming gangs where thousands of girls are assaulted by white English men every day dares lecture another culture on how to safeguard it's own children. They have their ways and it's not for us to judge.

So what do you want to happen? Do you want the law to change on marriage age? Are you going to protest?

Liberancho · 17/05/2026 15:36

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 15:23

And thats her choice if she wants to do that.

The ultimate freedom for women is to be able to choose whatever they want.

I remember a woman saying to me once "I know women have fought for our right to work, and Im a big believer in womens rights, but when I think about it - what I really want to do is stay at home with my baby, while my husband works"

Edited

At 15/16 choice comes down to a style of hoodie or a movie.

NOT marriage and a life of subservience.

You mention 'ultimate freedom' as if this was something afforded this girl.

I cannot help but wonder why some of the posters here are even on here.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 17/05/2026 15:36

Scarlettjune · 17/05/2026 15:33

No because that girl would not be the legal age, obviously.

16 is the legal age to get married in the Isle of Man.

Are you saying that the law is wrong then?

If it’s the legal age in that child’s country though, do you approve? Or say, if they ignore the law and just have a traditional ceremony?

Of course I think the law is wrong. No child should be a bride nor a groom. It’s immoral.

Sigh.

The law says that she is of legal age to get married.

Are you saying that you are better than the law then?

Absolutely I think all countries should ban child marriage.

Under the age of 18 = literally, legally a child.
18+ an adult.
just because she’s wearing enough makeup to pass for 20 years older doesn’t make a child an adult.

Lunarlightning · 17/05/2026 13:25

Would you make the same comment sbout an arranged marriage at 16 within the muslim community?

Absolutely I'd disagree with it within the muslim community!
Culture/religion are irrelevant to the fact child marriage should not be happening in this day and age, religion and culture aren't an excuse for practices like these.

Then why are you not protesting? You live in the UK - where this is a law. (In Scotland). The law is that people can get married at 16

If you're aware of grooming gangs operating have you reported them to the police?
How do you know there aren't grooming gangs in your own country that are going undetected? There are sexually abusive men all over the world I'm afraid. Not just in countries where they've been exposed.

Women commenting that it is perfectly ok for a 16 year old child to get married because of the cultural traditions of the travelling community should give their heads a wobble. It's grim.

That's a rather sad comment. Why do you feel that it's "grim" to marry the person that you love?

I am friends with a couple who were married in their teens, she was 16 and he was 18. They already had a child by the time they got married. They've been married for almost 60 years.

I married young, though I wasn't a minor, I was just past my 20th birthday. My sisters married at 18 and 21. All three of us are still married 50 years later.

Yep most parents of Year 11 kids at the moment are getting them to do their revision and go to bed at a reasonable time.

But the fight was for choice, it wasn't a fight to look down on women who might prefer to remain in traditionally gendered roles.
There are many routes in life, different routes work for different people. Education is an utter battle for some children and not the making of them, a return to more vocational training at a younger age would be beneficial for some.
There's so much snobbery on MN for those who are not seen as living typical middle class lifestyles.

I am not looking down on women who choose traditionally gendered roles, I am pro choice and said as much. But, women being educated (school) is important to this choice.

I do. I also give to a charity in another country I’m linked to that works to end child marriage.

Im passionate that child marriage should not exist.

You didn’t answer the question though. What’s your answer?

I am English you donut. I don't report them because I don't know of them personally, I hardly skulk around the dark recesses of the country to encounter them but they are a widely recognised phenomenon (even if the media only seems to concentrate on the few cases that involve a certain demographic.)

SpringLicken · 17/05/2026 15:42

I am a Traveller and married young.
Is it cultural...yes, is it traditional...yes, is it right...absolutely not!
We are taught to be 'wives' and mothers from being young children and no matter how much we claim we're progressing we're still letting our women and children down by marrying them off young and removing them from education.
I will defend many of our cultural traditions for many reasons but removing the right to an education for our children and marriage of minors is barbaric and should not be celebrated.
