I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

The amount of women on here judging Traveller traditions but use childcare while they work.
We judge you too. We think you are shit parents and lead terrible lives.

Edited

If child marridge and forced traditional roles are so great then why are traveller women 6 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population? For men it’s 7 times more likely. Why are travellers women 30 times more likely to access domestic abuse services than the general population?

Im sick of posters like you writing "middle class". Don't you know that class is an offensive term?

I’m so sick of “open minded”, middle class women condoning shocking behaviour. No it is not okay that traveller women are taken out of education at 11 and heavily socialised to become house slaves. Just because it’s culture does not make it acceptable. Your virtue signalling as wokists perpetuates harm. Not every cultural practice is good. Some need to be stamped out.

I say this as a poc. Paris is largely protected because of her dad. Thousands of traveller girls are not so lucky.

Shame on anyone condoning female oppression

Edited

I think the main supporter of this on this thread is actually a member of the travelling community, TBF, rather than some middle-class handwringer, but I do agree with you.

Travelling girls are no longer leaving education young. There is travelling teenagers in every secondary school across Ireland and colleges including universities.
Many of the women who weren’t educated work in care roles and cleaning jobs, things have changed.
There is 3 girls in my DD year sitting there leaving certificate. It’s possible to get married in have a job.
There is a long way to go but that road is open.
They’ve faced a lot of discrimination over the years, their children removed from centuries by authorities drove them in secrecy too.

Not many at all though. They’re still the least represented group in universities, only around 3% of travellers go.

ObelixtheGaul · 17/05/2026 14:44

Really? I would be bored to tears. Each to their own, but it's nice to have a choice. Nothing wrong with making that choice as long as it IS a choice, not cultural pressure.

I would like it!

One time I had a canadian boyfriend. I went to stay in canada for the summer. I couldnt work on my visa. Its the only time i have been with a man , where he went out to work and i stayed at home. It was great! Very relaxing.

Exactly this. The health and DV stats are dreadful for traveller women. I believe the DA rate is 75%

No but they were judged on here for leaving education which is the natural first step to being a sahm

These are 2 very separate things. Lots of people become SAHMs, they don’t need to leave education early to do so.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/05/2026 14:55

ThejoyofNC · 17/05/2026 14:05

Usually at 11/12 years old for both.

We simply don't value formal education in the way you do.

Those who want schooling, get it. The percentage of those who do has increased since I was that age. But the vast majority don't.

Yes housework is a female responsibility. Earning money is the men's job.

That’s not true. Not in my experience, far from it.
its illegal in Ireland without social services approval to home educate and they wouldn’t approve that.
Roma travellers that are a century behind have authorities at their door if the children are missing school. If they took them out, they would be removed and rightly so.

They are not two very seperate things. If you leave education early you are more likely to become a SAHM.

Every minimum wage job in my city asks for GCSEs

I fucking hate housework. It bores me to tears. I’d be absolutely miserable in life if it was my ‘role’. Are you saying all girls born into the travelling community enjoy housework?

Well I’m stating what I’ve observed. This kind of performative behaviour is largely performed by middle class virtue signallers in my experience. Who are so open minded their brains fall out.

I have been in university tutorials where middle class students (with very plummy accents) have tried justifying female genital mutilation. I’m sick of it.

Whilst they’re trying to come across as progressive and evolved, women’s lives are being destroyed.

They got married on the Isle of Man where you can still get married at 16.

There are restrictions - eg someone resident in England can’t travel to the Isle of Man to get married. But yes if that’s were you are from…:

Do we enjoy work from jobs either? No one really ENJOYS a lot of work.

Some people love their jobs. Many people hate or just put up with their jobs

kscarpetta · 17/05/2026 14:06

Venezuela Fury is currently still of compulsory school age so she'd only be allowed to work 12 hours a week, not full time.

She's probably just about to leave if she hasn't already. It still doesn't mean she's a child.

Eyesopenwideawake · 17/05/2026 14:57

Newmeagain · 17/05/2026 13:23

That’s what I also find baffling. Is it ok for girls to not be educated and be married off early etc just because it’s “their culture”? Where do we draw the line?

Memo : it's not your line to draw.

Nanny0gg · 17/05/2026 14:57

JacknDiane · 17/05/2026 13:49

And? Is everyone got to live their lives according to your rules??

She's happy, the groom is happy, the parents are all happy. That's as much as anyone needs to know.

I wish them all the best.

Many 16year olds are happy with their first loves

I certainly was.

Thank god we didn't marry

Zov · 17/05/2026 14:56

As I always say: we wouldnt make an animal work for fifty years. Why do we make humans do it

HowdoyoureallyKnow · 17/05/2026 14:58

What a depressing thread
@Lunarlightning no it's not black and white you can have a child and be at home with them whilst they are young.

Education isn't a means to an end it's everything and without education we won't have the context of anything at all.
Like being a horse led through life with blinkers on.

Nanny0gg · 17/05/2026 14:58

ThejoyofNC · 17/05/2026 13:49

So much bullshit on this thread.

I would correct people but what's the fucking point. Think what you want about gypsies and travellers, we couldn't care less.

Enjoy your ignorance.

A 16 year old girl has just married.

That's the point

Sartre · 17/05/2026 14:53

Not many at all though. They’re still the least represented group in universities, only around 3% of travellers go.

15 years ago, 3% were in secondary school.
They are opting to have 3rd level training, I know a beautician and two hairdressers from the community. It’s slowly getting better.

kscarpetta · 17/05/2026 14:59

pinkyredrose · 17/05/2026 14:57

She's probably just about to leave if she hasn't already. It still doesn't mean she's a child.

School girls are literally children and deserve society's protection.
They're entitled to an education.
They're entitled to protection against child labour.
They shouldn't be getting married.

The 'good old days' without those rights weren't so good for women.

Yes and it's not normal in our culture either.
