AIBU to find drag on mainstream TV disrespectful to women?

AIBU to think that drag is derogative woman face and unacceptable.

Women are oppressed by men, for example;

  • 1 in 4 women will be raped by a man in their lifetime.
  • Men generally hold most of the power and wealth, 90% of the ultra-wealthy in the world are men.
  • Men are less likely to experience sexual harassment and often have more freedom of movement without fear of violence.
  • Men are generally free from unpaid caring roles
  • Women are more likely to be objectified by men and valued for their body and youth whereas men are not and this creates a power imbalance.

With this in mind AIBU to think drag on main stream TV such as this 'artist' is totally unacceptable.

He has made fun and a jokes about lactation in grotesque fashion, squeezing cream out of his huge fake tits into a cup and has made fun of pregnancy and wears comedy size 'tits' and 'arse'.

The portrayal of any group's body or bodily functions in a grotesque manner for humour should surely be considered unacceptable, particularly when it mirrors historical patterns of oppression. Shouldn't it?

but it can be questioned, it is being questioned right here in this thread as we speak, it has been questioned for decades. No one is stopping anyone from saying they don't like drag.

It’s being questioned yes among the very group that it oppresses but not amongst the oppressor

heterosexual men were getting away with it and then it was questioned but I beg to differ anyone is questioning gay male presenters on tv doing continuing to do the same

Unfortunately, women can talk about these things until they are blue in the face but nothing will change until men call it out too.

Just like the suffragettes, they needed men onside to make it happen unfortunately.

Not sure I believe some of those images. And that they are not AI and entirely exaggerated.

Normal drag such as Dame Edna. No. I don’t find it offensive. I found Dame Edna hilarious.

It's interesting that when women's rights are being discussed, other women will tell us to go and talk elsewhere. Anyone would think the conversation might make people feel uncomfortable.

Thanks@millymollymandy4

I used to work with a gay man who did drag. Some of his acts were funny but some were just not funny and disrespectful to women.

the conversation doesn't make me uncomfortable. My comments were in response to the evidently untrue assertion that drag can't be questioned, and then the idea that women's questioning is of limited utility until men are on board too. If you want to reach men mumsnet is not the place to do it.

wishingonastar101 · 12/05/2026 17:06

I don't understand why drag is cool and funny and 'woke' but blacking up is a big no no...

I think you'll find most of the feminist movements have started with women discussing things with other women. You are misrepresenting my comments too, I said sadly things move when men get on board. And men getting onboard is normally after women have started the movement.

You are very dismissive and almost reprimanding me for starting this thread. It's most peculiar. Perhaps if you don't think it's worth talking about you should buzz off.

Nobody is saying it can’t be questioned - quite the opposite - we are pondering it’s not being questioned more widely

you are taking comments too literally even when they are recombined to you more clearly

I won’t be responding to any more of your comments as you seem to just be here to derail the thread into an argument

Well said

I’m relieved to find I’m not the only one who it just doesn’t sit with right

StarlingWaters · 12/05/2026 17:34

all I've done is point out that the assertion that drag can't be questioned is nonsense. Which it evidently is. If you don't want to engage with that be my guest.

I agree OP. Drag has always made me feel uncomfortable but this style of “extreme drag” is utterly demeaning. Anything that encourages people to think it’s fine is bad - and if the BBC are showing people on mainstream TV that are doing more extreme “comedy” online then the BBC is part of the problem.

I do find it interesting that there hasn’t been a similarly “hilarious” vein of comedy TV which shows women dressed like Mr Incredible waving two-foot-long fake floppy crimson schlongs and calling themselves “Rape Fiennes” as an incredibly witty play on the name Raphe Fiennes.

The reason is: because behind drag , we are talking about men - whether homosexual or not, they have always been the powerful oppressors - and many men have a fetish for feminisation. Like rape is about power as much as sex, this kind of fetishisation follows the same course - it’s not gently mocking. It’s a revolting distortion which women are supposed to laugh along with, just like we all used to laugh along with blackface and cruel racist jokes.

Why is it on us to prove that it’s not just offensive but actually socially dangerous? We have unmanageable amounts of sexual abuse in this country and no one wants to look at why. Part of the “why” is that we have normalised disgusting objectification of women - and men are NOT subjected to the same treatment. This is not harmless fun.
