So what can in practical terms fully halt illegal immigration?

Wellwhatnowbellaboo · 09/05/2026 10:06

Reform has won by a landslide .... immigration is probably by the look of it the biggest issue. What can realistically without breaking laws be done to really halt this with a big impact ? What would Farage actually do ? Would and should we as a country break some laws to get this done and speak to what people really feel is an issue ? (Many countries do). This is not in labour's dna so I doubt anything will come if it now ... but if you've thought about it or you have solutions what are they ?
And if you are opposed- why and what's the answer ?

Many ordinary people would like to have their accommodation, utility bills and food all inclusive.

Well 54% of the country are on some sort of benefit so a lot of people do.

A shared hotel and like £7 a week. Yeah hotels do have water and heating so these are covered. Not a comfy life to most people.

They aren’t taking council houses (not allowed) not are being in the process of immigrating (not allowed).

What does it cost per week in a hotel with food?

It’s a comfier life than many people have in the UK, and likely much better than they would have in their home country. Many people would love to have £7 a week left after paying housing costs, their bills and for food.

If that is true it sounds horrendous. "Local communities don't tollerate the building of mosques - if any are attempted they are pulled down in the night"? I am really struggling to articulate quite how sick this makes me feel.

Poland isn't exactly renowned for its multicultural tolerance.

Yes, this is what my French relatives tell me.

Same here. It’s not that the black economy doesn’t exist in France but it is much smaller and it incredibly hard to do pretty much anything without a carte d’identité and a livret de famille (if you have children).

The idea of skipping into the country and immediately getting a job as a delivery driver or in a nail parlour, no questions asked, simply isn’t possible, especially in smaller towns.

I can just imagine a ‘Turkish barber’ or dodgy vape shop setting up in my relatives’ small town - the mayor would be straight round and have it shut down and everyone’s IDs and right to work checked in an instant.

Poland for the poles. What's the issue with that

Without illegal immigrants who will work for low wages certain types of business would have no staff.

Besafeeatcake · 09/05/2026 17:14

Yes I said the basic benefits which is often a hotel and like £7 per week. Hardly the life of Riley.

Yes it depends on the accommodation. If you have food included in the hotel/hostel then you get about a tenner a week

If you have to pay for your food, you get about 50 quid a week.

Adult UC for a single person for living costs by comparison is nearly 100 quid if they're over 25

Peanuts in either case.

But they are supposed to do all that in the UK. Right to rent check by landlords. Employers getting checks. Bank checks etc

If they can’t afford to pay people a proper wage they shouldn’t be operating.

They mean the costs of accommodation. No council tax, rent, utility etc. So that's probably £200 a week as furnished as well. And they are in good spots

ilovesleep6 · 09/05/2026 17:14

Accommodation, utility bills, food all paid for. Usually they get clothes and phones and all basic needs are taken care of. Plus a small allowance for anything extra. I would call that a benefit, wouldn’t you?

What else do you want to give to classify it as a comfy benefit, a car allowance?

Edited

Phone and clothes?

What I fail to understand is why the government are complaining so bitterly about the benefits bill and seem to begrudge uk citizens a penny whilst being quite willing about housing and feeding any random person turning up on our shores. There was a bbc article a couple of weeks ago that said that lawyers help people to pretend they're gay in order to be granted asylum. This is tolerated whilst disabled uk people are demonised.

This is bound to piss people off. Why is the government taking this stance?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 09/05/2026 17:24

They are economic migrants so this is where the action needs to be.

Surely it’s easy to see the connection between the massive grey economy, the endless shops that are only a front for illegal activity and the thousands of illegal migrants.

The government needs to deal with the pull factors.

Reduce the illegal work opportunities, be tough on crime and reduce the cushy accommodation.

kinkytoes · 09/05/2026 10:51

Reduce the comfy life and benefits offered here. I honestly think that's the only way.

People aren't coming here for the weather, that's for sure.

They aren't coming here for the benefits. They come here to work. Without that additional workforce, a lot of older people would not have anyone to look after them. That might be me, you, our relatives, anyone needing that care.

Be careful what you wish for.

If you had to flee your country would you want to live in a country where you already know people who live there, you speak the language and understand the culture or would you go somewhere where you know no one and couldn't speak the language?
There is no compulsion to seek asylum in the nearest safe country. It is also impractical. Are you saying the UK shouldn't take any asylum seekers?

They are not " fleeing". They are flocking.

Because your local family with five children and one disabled is now without work, getting housing, plus support, and not contributing. Now it's £1400 a month just for the children. That's on top of whatever they get for accommodation,.adults, council tax and NHS bills

It sure does and I said some sort of benefit which obvs includes these. But still over half the population get some sort of benefit. No where near this in France, Germany etc

Yes, although usually from charities.

The benefits include child benefit and pension. More.ober 60s then under 16s.

Hahahaha omg so naive. If they come on a visa to care, as soon as the 2 years is up they are gone

Tauranga · 09/05/2026 17:27

Purplebunnie · 09/05/2026 11:49

And at least we would know who they are and if they are accepted they can get a job and start contributing.

At the moment we have people arriving and sometimes we know about them and sometimes we don't. From the news it would appear a lot of those we don't know about end up employed in shops to sell counterfeit goods

What job can they " get"....or rather...whose job?

Great idea to let the world in to the UK to depress wages of those doing unskilled work, already getting a low wage.

Are your relatives addicted to having their nails done and their car washed?

Do they take drugs?

If they don’t then they will be fine.
