To think Starmer will be gone by the end of Friday? Or will it be Monday evening?

Whoever you are voting for today, it's probably not Labour - they might loose 2,000 seats.

How long exactly will it be before he resigns?

We don’t know.

BIossomtoes · 07/05/2026 11:03

Well if won’t be by Monday however much you might like it.

Motnight · 07/05/2026 11:04

I am voting Labour. Feel politically homeless at the moment with Labour the best of a bad bunch.

Starmer seems to me intent on staying.

(My post may age very badly very quickly!)

GasPanic · 07/05/2026 11:04

Oddschecker is indicating 1/3 that he will be out in 2026 atm and 7/2 in 2027.

OneTealShaker · 07/05/2026 11:05

He’ll cling on like a bad smell. he won’t be going anywhere. But that could be a good thing because it saves us from Angela Rayner. Imagine that.

This government is even worse than the last one. People love to say ‘oh but Liz Truss’. Our cost of borrowing is higher now than under Liz Truss.

The choice now is between Starmer and Rayner. Thos country is finished. Unless there is a general election very quickly and these clowns ade voted out altogether.

Lomonald · 07/05/2026 11:06

I mean it is council elections in England isn't it, no reflection on Westminster. So what are you talking about?

Bunnyofhope · 07/05/2026 11:06

You are right about the seats and wrong about him going.

Have you been asleep for the last two years?

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 07/05/2026 11:07

Highly doubtful he will go. He’s clinging on for dear life whoever his replacement would be would be worse than Starmer so…

PollyBell · 07/05/2026 11:07

Going? Since when?

Bookfishtea · 07/05/2026 11:07

I have voted Labour because I voted for local issues and Labour have a good grasp (and track record) of local issues.
I think he will be out, dont particularly like him but dont think we should be having so many different prime ministers. I hope whoever replaces him (if thats what happens) is in quickly and sits up and listens to the voters in order to reduce the likelihood of a reform government/hung parliament next time.

Ablondiebutagoody · 07/05/2026 11:08

Let's hope but someone more left will take over so things will get a lot worse before they can be kicked out at the next GE

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 07/05/2026 11:09

He will go before the next election but not yet. I mean, who in their right mind would actually want to take the reins right now with the country and the world in the state that it's in? Things are going to get worse before they get better - if they get better. I reckon they will leave him to ride it out for a while.

A bad result would confirm rapidly declining support for the Labour Party. That will also mean they lose lots of seats at a general election. Ousting him now would be to try to stop that happening.

whywonthelisten · 07/05/2026 11:12

I think it's hard to imagine how he can stay if things are as bad as expected. However, there is no consensus on his successor (it seems) so the path to replacing him isn't clear.

I guess Wes Streeting is the likeliest candidate. I quite like him. I think he's a good communicator.

Oh get a grip. Boris the British Trump or Starmer?

Actually Burnham and Rayner are looked upon as pretty much equal in the betting odds ATM, even given the fact it would take some operations to get Burnham into parliament.

Streeting is looked on as twice as improbable as those two.

Farage is about level with Milliband, and Cooper and Mahmood looked on as twice as improbable as those two.

Crew20 · 07/05/2026 11:14

Don’t be silly. There’s usually a swing against the governing party in local elections. He’s not going anywhere. But he might be persuaded to step aside before the next general election.

EasternStandard · 07/05/2026 11:15

I’m not sure he’ll resign, who knows though maybe he will. But if not it’s more who will mount a challenge.

Batties · 07/05/2026 11:16

It should be possible to have a discussion about politics in which we disagree without the need to resort to telling someone to ‘get a grip’, you’ve weakened your own position at that point.

RedRiverShore6 · 07/05/2026 11:16

There isn't really anyone to replace him at the moment, Burnham needs a lot of time, my personal choice is Wes Streeting but I'm not sure he's that popular with the party, he also seems to have not got the memo that he is supposed to wear rolled up shirt sleeves and no tie.

letsallchant · 07/05/2026 11:19

Still more of these threads pushing the idea of PM change and an early general election? Beats talking about Farage's £5 million bung I guess. Election will be 2029 and we'll see who looks best placed to run the country then.

Haha at the shirt / tie memo.

stargirl1701 · 07/05/2026 11:20

Why? Both Thatcher and Blair lost thousands of local seats. They still went on to win the next GE.

HeadofAudiology · 07/05/2026 11:21

Do you seriously think local election results don't reflect on Westminster?

Catastrophic Labour loses in local councils and losing The Welsh Senedd for the first time in its history will reflect very badly on Westminster and Starmer in particular.

Any prime minister except Starmer would have gone following the Mandelson scandal. However, Starmer is a special kind of arrogant narcissistic. He will cling onto power until he is dragged kicking and screaming from 10 Downing Street. He puts his own interests ahead of both his own party and the country.

I think we must suffer him as prime minister for a while longer, but if Angela Rayner is the alternative, that might not be a bad thing.
