AIBU to think children should not be taken shopping in pyjamas?

NoahVale · 04/05/2026 09:06

what is the craze for taking y our young dc to the shops in their pyjamas?
bad enough that they drive there but walking down the high street in pyjamas,
it looks appalling.
i just saw a man going past my house, he had been to the shops, and i thought, i bet he didnt wash before he went to the shops, next thing a woman coming up the road with 3 dc in their pjyamas

Oh give over. I wish some of you could come and visit and look out of my window, or do a few school runs with me.

Sometimes it tells you ALL you need to know about a person. I used to work in a local school and we knew which parents would be the ones scraping in the playground at pick up when they came for the nursery show aground in PJs (yes, some couldn’t even be fucked to get dressed for that), and stinking of weed.

(But there is a reason Jeremy Kyle producers used to scour the estates around me for guests!)

mixedcereal · 04/05/2026 11:23

It’s dystopian that a healthy, happy, well cared for 3 year old child can’t leave their house in PJs without being called neglected and lacking self respect

i dont think 3 years old count in my scenario

This thread reminds me of those extremely tedious threads which appear around Christmas where you have families boasting of spending Christmas Day in their pyjamas! Again, absolutely unfathomable! All my life, beginning when I was a child, for me Christmas Day means dressing in your best or new clothes, not slobbing around in matching pyjamas!

Funnywonder · 04/05/2026 11:39

I will notice if someone - child or adult - is in pyjamas, but I couldn’t give a toss. Apart from anything else, you have absolutely no idea what is going on in other people’s lives. Depression. Illness. Learning difficulties. Neurodivergence. Anxiety. Bereavement. Lots of stuff that might cause someone to go out in nightwear or take their children out in nightwear, either regularly or as a one off. You just don’t know. People like you, OP, remind me that it’s simply not enough to move through this life not hurting anyone. You will be judged on everything.

Waitingforthesunnydays · 04/05/2026 11:41

Adults I would judge, young kids I wouldn’t. Sometimes it’s just easier and really, how does it possibly impact on anyone else around them?? I put my ds in his PJs after his swimming lesson then we go and do a weekly shop then home to bed. I’m not going to make my life harder by changing him into clothes for an hour just to battle with getting his PJs on when we get home just because he “might look slobby” in the supermarket. He’s 6 years old. He can still pull off the PJs in public look without looking slobby I think. But even if he doesn’t I really couldn’t give a crap!

TragicMuse · 04/05/2026 11:43

Tell yourself they’re all wearing co-ords and you’ll be fine…

Jeremy Kyle also use to advise people to wear tracksuits as they were cooler under the studio lights!

Forestgreenblue · 04/05/2026 11:52

Honestly - I think it depends on the age of child and time of day. I think we’ve all had the ‘oh god I’ve forgotten to pick ingredient up for tea tonight’ moment.

Ive often nipped into the supermarket with child in pyjamas to pick up said item/s

Adults in pyjamas in public - utterly gross though. It takes 2 minutes to stick trousers and a top on

allthatremainsislove · 04/05/2026 11:52

SEN parent here, my child lives in pajamas due to sensory issues. It’s the stares from people like you that make my heart hurt each day. My daughter and I aren’t “scummy” , “chavvy” or disorganised /
lazy. If I didn’t allow her to wear pajamas out we’d never leave the house. The comments here so so judgmental, please take a moment to imagine if it was your child and how much these comments and stares would hurt. I’ve grown a thick skin over the years but the wrinkled nose stares never fail to hurt me.

Oh I’ve heard ALL the stories. When we first moved here, a couple of parents on DDs class couldn’t wait to tell me they had been on JK and show me the videos 😳🤣

I really truly couldn’t care ! Adult or child. What difference is it to me ? Especially very young children !!

plsdontlookatme · 04/05/2026 10:32

I'm not, why would I be? I dress a certain way to go to my office job in central London. I'd feel silly dressed the same way in a Lidl in a rural deprived area.

It was what you said about going into Lidl 'dressed up to the nines'. I mean, without being privy to the contents of your wardrobe I'm going to hazard a guess that you own casual wear, and no one on the thread has suggested it's necessary to dress smartly for the supermarket. Just... not PJs. shrugs

The phrase 'the lower classes' makes you sound rather snooty, though. Just saying.

Of course it’s the last one! Opinions on MN change very swiftly if there’s an opportunity to argue about it!

What is the breakfast run?

I don’t think they’re running for breakfast. All sound a bit 🥴

Slowrunevenfeelsgood · 04/05/2026 12:08

Just came back to thread and can’t believe that the OP started the day off and then spent the entire morning just banging out posts on pj wearing kids. Go for a walk! Like the family you stood and watched this morning

OneNewLeader · 04/05/2026 12:09

I wear Zara/M&S Coords as sleepwear, I can wake, walk my dog, change, run, shower and then go to work. Judge away.

Life is to be lived, to extract what value/enjoyment you can from it, while you can. Who really knows why people shop in their PJ’s. Hardly seems worthy of comment. And yet here I am.

just musing as people walk past my window

Is there nothing more interesting on Netflix?

It's not something I'd do personally but couldn't care less. Can you articulate why it really matters or what it represents to you OP? What are you afraid of?

I wouldn't even notice

Hard agree with this. Plus of all the things one could be dismayed by - billionaires hoarding wealth, AI killing jobs for school and uni leavers, the Middle East on fire, climate collapse - people wearing clothes they're comfortable in seems pretty daft.

Ah. You need a whole new area of Mumsnet, titled ‘I am Being Completely Reasonable. Come and Agree With Me’. You’ll have plenty of company tbf.
