Middle class wannabe house. More money than style reveals their working class roots.

We have a hot tub. Blame the previous owners who left it. We are definitely upper end of middle class, arguably in my case aristocracy.

But what class of aristocracy are you?

I once heard a duke pontificate on the subject - 'I'd say we're probably upper middle class aristocracy, if you had to put a label on it.'

Buges · 30/04/2026 23:22

I wouldn’t say middle class. My house is almost identical. Difference is I live in Scotland and it would be at least half that price.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 30/04/2026 23:25

My dream home and dream price! Wish there were houses in London like that! I would say middle class

or is it just run of the mill these days?

Run of the mill, my partner and I have never earned less than 100 grand between us, we don’t live in a house like that

xxxlove · 30/04/2026 23:37

It is just an oversized house. Middle class or even class, my ass

Redpaisley · 30/04/2026 23:43

Yes it’s a poorly decorated middle class house.

IckyIck · 30/04/2026 23:44

My house would put Chatsworth to shame.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/04/2026 23:49

Fucking massive compared to my house, and worth the same!

Edit - there are some odd things about the decor but wouldn’t be too hard to change to someone else’s personal taste

Speakofthedevil · 30/04/2026 23:51

Thank you, good people! For a non-Brit, this thread is comedy gold 😆. Such delightfully sneery snobbery.

For what it's worth, I like the exterior; it's a beautiful house. Don't care if it's 'new build', 'non-Victorian', 'without acres of land', it's still a very nice-looking house. Interior is not to my taste, but it's not my home; obviously, the owners liked it. Best of luck to them with the sale.

If you like it, OP, and can afford a similar house, go for it. It's so difficult for me to comprehend someone choosing where/how to live/decorate based on perceived 'class'. Stick an Aga in or whatever that medieval nonsense is called, and be done with it. A few fridge magnets for 'evidence of travels' wouldn't hurt either, I guess. Just choose something more upmarket, so St Anton/Val-d'Isere/Tuscany rather than Benidorm.

NicknamesAreAPain · 30/04/2026 23:52

I cannot believe that this house is sooo reasonable! Where i love it would be millions! Mind blown.

SixtySomething · Yesterday 00:01

I really like the outside of the house and think it looks classy. I do think there's a few problems.
It's an impressive looking house on a tiny plot on a featureless road of identikit houses, presumably a bit far from anywhere - note the nearest railway station is 8 miles.
Inside they have really squashed an awful lot in - three ensuites etcetera, and , with the garage being integral, it somehow ends up feeling a bit cramped IMO.
As for what other people will think of you, some will think the above. Others will like /not like it according to how you decorate it.

Nothing middle class about that house. No books, art, evidence of travels, musical instruments...just an awful lot of fake plants.

I’m always amazed, but probably shouldn’t be, that well -off people have the most appalling taste in wall art.
They’ll spend £100k on a kitchen then put something tasteless and cheap on the wall.

I once heard a duke pontificate on the subject - 'I'd say we're probably upper middle class aristocracy, if you had to put a label on it.'

Yes, but also, what is 'arguable aristocracy'? It sounds a bit flimsy to me. I only talk to solid aristocracy, the titled ones, dukes and that sort of thing. I don't think I could talk to someone who wanted to argue about whether they were aristocracy or not. What if it turned out they were just middle class after all? So ill-bred!

Don't bother talking to me, I'm only a baronet.

The longer I have lived away from the UK, the more horrified I become at the relentless obsession with class. It’s a nice house, no need to sneer at the decor not fitting your ridiculous preconceived class markers!

Mumwithbaggage · Yesterday 00:52

It's a nice house. I prefer my house which is more rural and bigger with different decor (not fancier, just different). Each to their own.

Credittocress · 30/04/2026 21:12

I wouldn’t say there is any class when it comes to that house 🤢

Unnecessarily bitchy comment. What's wrong with it? It might not be my personal taste but its fairly neutral. I'm house hunting atm and id say its pretty representative of the vast majority of houses that have been decorated in the last 5 years. I'm not sure what about ir screams classless to you?

NeedSomeHeadspace · Yesterday 01:13

The decor is AI according to the Agent’s brief.

So much bollocks talked on this site . ‘Evidence of travels’ 🙄

Exactly! What are people expecting exactly? Pages from a passport stuck to the walls? A large photo of someone pretending to hold up the leaning tower of Lisa? (They'd probably mock that for being naff as well!)

I doubt most people could even tell whether a random "object d'arte' is from Denmark or Dunelm from a photo?

Not to mention the fact that many people deliberately remove as much extraneous clutter from their homes before putting it up for sale on purpose, as estate agents specifically advise

a) to make it look as uncluttered as possible
B) for privacy - they dont want loads of photos of their kids splashed all over the Internet with their exact address
C) for security - if a load of strangers are going to be tramping through your house (usually when youre not there) you'd be an idiot to leave anything expensive or easily damaged on show, just in case.

I do wonder if half of these superior intellectuals have either intelligence or basic common sense!

I think middle class encompasses a wide range of income and taste. There are various niches within the parameters. Bookish/ musical MC is one. Shiny and bland but pricy is another.

This, with bells on.

Crwysmam · Yesterday 01:46

Yes obsession with class tends to suggest an aspirational attitude. My DSIL is a terrible social climber. They have recently returned from Japan and since I have a number of friends who have also holidayed in Japan over the last couple of months I commented that it was becoming the new Benidorm. She wasn’t impressed and didn’t see the funny side.

As to the house, there’s too much grey. I’m currently nursing a threadbare living room carpet at the moment. Due to the grey era I haven’t been able to find a decent carpet I like to replace it. Even the more expensive manufacturers do every shade you want as long as it’s grey or beige.

I wil admit to owning one grey carpet but it was more out of necessity than choice when we were redecorating DS’s bedroom and he wanted a grey carpet.

My god, are you stupid or what?!? This home is obviously staged. No one selling a house leaves all their personal possessions out for strangers on the internet to dissect. The goal is a neutral, uncluttered space, not showcasing their hobbies for your approval. The absence of books doesn’t mean they don’t read — it means they understand how to market a property, which is more than can be said for this bonehead comment. You've clearly never sold a house before, or if you have and your realtor let you keep all your shit out then they clearly weren't very good at their job.
