What i find tacky and classless is random people on the internet taking about someone's home making disparaging comments.

Agreed. Poor manners.

LOL.

Whats amused you?

A new build would never be my first choice but this seems like a lovely example. Four bedrooms, 3 receptions, parking for 3 cars (plus a double garage). Bedrooms aren’t the biggest but they seem well designed. the garden isn’t huge but it’s well
balanced with the house. Can’t tell
how overlooked it is from the back but there are worse examples for sure, overlooked from all sides. Mumsnet must have some sort of filter for the wealthy; this is a big house and a pipe dream for many. It’s a substantial size property and hence it is classed as band F.

This. What a bizarre thread. Can’t we just live in what we like and not be judged?

My house, built by an architect in 1967, described as ‘frankly bizarre’ by a firmly middle class acquaintance when bought by us ten years ago would have you all scratching your heads.

Now I want to see your house!! I’m sure it quite lovely.

SlumChum · 30/04/2026 22:36

The fact it is detached, has four bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and has a garden office puts it firmly in nice middle class house for me. Most of the place is also decorated tastefully but as you said that's not really important in your decision.

Who was talking about honour? I don’t think any form of wealth is inherently ‘honourable’. The point was merely about the disparagement towards ‘new money’. Why?

I am talking about honour, because disparagement of new money or inheritance sometimes comes from value judgments about activity and reward.

Then why the disparagement towards ‘new money’? Do you believe working for a living to be ‘dishonourable’?

The money people earn
is not related in any real way
to the value of what they do
in many cases

Nothing middle class about that house. No books, art, evidence of travels, musical instruments...just an awful lot of fake plants.

What a ridiculous statement.

ApplebyArrows · 30/04/2026 22:47

Practically a slumhouse. Smaller than my dog's kennel.

TwentyPastSix · 30/04/2026 22:47

It’s not MC by my definition.

Wolmando · 30/04/2026 22:48

It must be a fairly cheap area, it's similar to where I live for house prices, a lot of places would only get you a 3 bed for that price

Somedreamer · 30/04/2026 22:50

These mean and snide comments are peak mumsnet 😂 Pretend you’re hearing them at a Year 8 school disco, OP 💃

Heylittlesongbird · 30/04/2026 22:53

If you have genuinely just linked a random house which is similar to one you like then I feel quite sorry for the owners. They’ll have a huge amount of traffic and their tastes are being criticised without their knowledge or them asking about it. It feels a bit mean to me.

Travelfairy · 30/04/2026 22:54

Beautiful home, I wouldnt think average. I love the garden room. Lovely spacious home that alot of people could only aspire to own

So much bollocks talked on this site . ‘Evidence of travels’ 🙄

hahabahbag · 30/04/2026 22:57

It’s huge, around here though it would cost double that admittedly.

ButterYellowHair · 30/04/2026 23:02

Class doesn’t depend on the price, size or decor of a home. It’s more nuanced.

rollinginthedeepsea · 30/04/2026 23:02

I think it’s rather lovely personally! Similar price to where I live , further North, looks like a generous sized house for a family living on a comfortable wage

SonyaLoosemore · 30/04/2026 23:05

Inburess · 30/04/2026 21:29

I’m looking at a similar house (in a slightly different area) and I suppose wanted to know what people would think of me if I lived somewhere like that! I know it’s shallow!

I would think you were maybe a bit 'flashy' but that's just me!

I am delighted to learn that when I sell, all the suitcases perched precariously on the top of wardrobes will be seen as evidence of travels.

MeganM3 · 30/04/2026 23:09

Yes middle class, but of the suburban / bland type of middle class. Rather than the more cultured and educated, ‘agent-guarde’ type of middle class.

SpringLambton · 30/04/2026 23:10

Middle class by house size and price (in that area). Decor and furniture are closer to aspirational working class.
