I like the house but who cares what class it is

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 22:24

flagpolesitta · 30/04/2026 22:21

Also why is new money used negatively? It just means you actually worked for your wealth rather than acquired or inherited.

Bankers? Marketing execs? Life coaches?
Money is made very strangely nowadays.

LBFseBrom · 30/04/2026 22:25

Can't tell from that, it looks as though it has been extended. If you are that interested in how 'middle class' the house is, you need to see some of the other houses in the road and find out what people do for a living.

I'm not sure houses actually take on class but places like that exist in very mixed areas.

Can you easily get to a good city or enjoyable countryside or is it a Suburban Trap? I fear suburbs.

Where I live now is a tiny fraction of the space where I grew up, but both were in interesting cities and not far from nice walks.

Ashbourne is lovely. Small picturesque town surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Ha. I don't think so. People desperate to appear MC wouldn't have that decor and hot tub. The aspiring MC abhors a hot tub.
Looks to me like the house of people with enough money to have their house the way they want it with the things they want in it, who couldn't give a monkeys about class.

LOL.

What is an acceptable way to make money, in your opinion?

NoSoupForU · 30/04/2026 22:22

What the fuck is a middle class house? And why the fuck are people so obsessed with labelling themselves middle class? Can't you just live your life and like whatever you like rather than whatever you feel curated to like in order to appear sufficiently middle class?

I don't like the house. I'm not a fan of new build Barratt type houses and I don't like the layout or decor.

This. What a bizarre thread. Can’t we just live in what we like and not be judged?

My house, built by an architect in 1967, described as ‘frankly bizarre’ by a firmly middle class acquaintance when bought by us ten years ago would have you all scratching your heads.

Hotpants123 · 30/04/2026 22:26

What i find tacky and classless is random people on the internet taking about someone's home making disparaging comments.

A settee belongs in a front room!

Apologies.

We have a three piece suite in our front room. With a dumpty obviously, we're not animals.

Funnys · 30/04/2026 22:23

Snobby!

Noooooo a lounge has a couch 😁

LooneyLiberalSpaceWaster · 30/04/2026 22:27

Nice on the outside, naff on the inside.

What is an acceptable way to make money, in your opinion?

I am not sure, but I do not think working is necessarily more honourable than inheriting. Especially if the paid work makes the world more unequal, polluted, or narcissistic.

Are you referring to the scales on the sideboard in photo 5?

WildGarden · 30/04/2026 22:28

Are you referring to the scales on the sideboard in photo 5?

No, I was talking to the posters who were trying to defend new money as better than inheritance. Both can be problematic.

The house has a lot of potential and would be fun to change and has enough space to live in and experiment with changing it at the same time.

Allseeingallknowing · 30/04/2026 22:29

ToffeeCrabApple · 30/04/2026 22:20

Nice middle class home but it's a cramped plot. All that money on decor for a small garden, its a bit fur coat no keks

Not ever wants a large garden. This one is nice enough and big enough for most.

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 22:31

£625k is astonishingly good value!

WonderingWanda · 30/04/2026 22:31

I don't think class can be defined by house size or income.

That house is the sort of house someone on a very good middle income might be able to afford but that could be someone working class who is doing well for themselves financially.

It is bland and boring, devoid of personality and looks like the show home to me....none of that indicates class either.

WildGarden · 30/04/2026 22:26

well of course a front room has a 3 piece suite (and the long one is called a settee 😂)

Allseeingallknowing · 30/04/2026 22:32

On another thread a poster wanted to know whether she should accept a house with a downstairs loo and no garden, and on here there are horrible, snobby comments on a house which most could only dream of!

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 22:27

Who was talking about honour? I don’t think any form of wealth is inherently ‘honourable’. The point was merely about the disparagement towards ‘new money’. Why?

Fatsnowflake · 30/04/2026 22:33

Is this a clever marketing ploy? Mumsnet are obsessed with class so it’s a perfect way to get your target audience looking at the listing.

LBFseBrom · 30/04/2026 22:33

Very shallow. Do you want people to categorise you, class-wise? Just be yourself.

If you need a house of that size, it's very nice, more than adequate.

It's also unbelievably cheap, you can't buy a three bed semi around my way for that price.
