Parent went mental at my Ddog!

WesternAmy · 30/04/2026 17:42

Can someone please tell me how Ddog was at fault here?! We were walking on a footpath close to our house earlier, and a woman was pushing her toddler along on a sort of bike thing.

As we were passing, the toddler dropped a cuddly toy. Ddog instinctively went to pick this up (it resembled a dog toy) and I stopped him.

The woman went mental, shouted at Ddog “NO, NO” and I hurried us away.

I can tell it has impacted him, he has been really subdued since which is not like him at all.

Am I wrong to think the woman should have had some restraint?

One thing this has taught me - there is something that (D)Mumsnetter’s hate more than having to sleep with their Husband’s. DDogs!

OP I've got nothing against yours or anyone's dog. That said you've got to be realistic about the general public. Strangers aren't going to know that you have a sensitive dog or to treat it differently because of that. Most people have their own crap to worry about.

Apart from the minimum of 10 posts a month complaining about them in some capacity.

10 posts a month? Um that’s a tiny number in the scheme of mumsnet

HarkHarktheDogsdoBark · 30/04/2026 18:35

People are not brought up around animals enough. A compulsory year in wildlife conservation or on a farm would do wonders. Either as a break from school or midlife.

No wonder our society lacks compassion. Fluffy toys or 'nature' (walks in municipal parks) or screens. Not living beings.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 30/04/2026 18:32

have you read the OP correctly?

I can’t see anywhere that suggests the dog needed to be told to leave the toy twice.

Yes I have. Why would the woman even make a peep if the dog was under control? Doesn't make sense does it?

DuchessofStaffordshire · 30/04/2026 18:36

WesternAmy · 30/04/2026 17:45

He’s a very tame DLab.

Labs do pick things up and retrieve them, it's kind of their job. But, I can see why the woman panicked. Just let it go.

No….which I think is the point of the post 🤣🤣

there was no need for the woman to shout out, because the dog had already left the toy alone.

Branster · 30/04/2026 18:38

A labrador should be more robust than becoming subdued because she heard a strange woman shout.
I would be very surprised if your dog was affected by this incident.
I think you are looking for problems where there aren’t any.
The woman was worried and raised her voice in panic. She did nothing wrong.
You reacted the correct way and did not allow your dog to pick up the toy.
No issues anywhere.
To whoever said teach your dog not to pick things up. This was something dropping right next to the dog, the dog would want to investigate and sniff the object. Imagine if that was a sandwich dropping next to a labrador. Gone in half a second!

MosquitoFace · 30/04/2026 18:38

I run a Ddog counselling session to help emotionally impacted dogs with this exact trauma. Just send me £500 pounds and I will send you DLab a tick tock video which is 100% guaranteed to instantly soothe the poor creature. not guaranteed

True.
perhaps it’s more, I don’t log on often.

it’s always basically the same post, with the same comments, each and every time anyway

AndWorseAFemale · 30/04/2026 18:38

If I'd have been quick witted enough (I would not) I'd have shouted back at the child "NO! Don't Taunt Dogs!!" - because it's the same level of ridiculous as her shouting at your dog.

I don't think shouting NO twice counts as "went mental at" though.

VoiceFromThePit · 30/04/2026 18:38

Obviously you need to train Ddog but the woman was a loon, out of order and should keep her trap shut and mind her own business imho.

It’s not as if you knocked the toy out of the kids hand, the toy being on the floor was on her.

Arlanymor · 30/04/2026 18:41

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 30/04/2026 18:37

there was no need for the woman to shout out, because the dog had already left the toy alone.

So you think she just randomly said stuff when the dog was fully under control and there was no need? Why would she even bother? Really why?

Or is it more likely that she didn't feel the dog was under control, this all happened in seconds, and she responded in the moment.

We have one side of the story and of course the OP is going to say: "But I had said no and it was all fine!" Someone who uses the term 'going mental' and applies that to someone saying 'no' twice?

Love how triggered mumsnetters get when anyone dares to show affection towards their pets 🤣

Don’t be weird. I have a cat who I adore but I don’t call her dcat because it’s fucking stupid.

DeskGnome · 30/04/2026 18:42

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 30/04/2026 18:25

Well someone was being dramatic and it wasn’t the OP

Lol it’s definitely the OP.

It’s a complete non story.

Funnywonder · 30/04/2026 18:42

rwalker · 30/04/2026 17:50

She didn’t want Dslober on it

🤣🤣

I think you’re overreacting OP. The woman probably panicked a bit when she thought your dog was going to lift the toy. It’s a non event and I’m sure your pet will get over the trauma of being drop kicked - sorry shouted at - very soon.

dovess · 30/04/2026 18:43

What on earth is a ‘Ddog?’ Get a grip .

Fair play.

But the whole point of DH is that it’s quicker to type than husband. DDog is more letters, it’s so weird and cringe. Also nobody thinks your dog is dear or darling other than you, and I would shout at it if it tried to out its horrible slobbery mouth around my kids toys too.

Edited

Incorrect. I think the OP's dog is both dear and darling.

Yep still triggered...

stichguru · 30/04/2026 18:47

Nothing bizarre happened at all. This wasn't about her being angry at you or wanting you to pay her for the toy if your dog destroyed it, this was about her wanting him NOT to destroy the toy, probably because her son wouldn't sleep without it. IF your dog had destroyed the toy, or even just slobbered on it, even if you'd paid her for Ddog destroying her property, she probably wouldn't have been able to have a new one or even had that one washed and dried by bedtime.

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 30/04/2026 18:48

DDog is probably upset because you're upset OP.

I'm forever saying NO to my 2 DLabs 😂

My current dog and my last dog thought that no was part of their name 😂. It is a massive overreaction though. - the woman that is. Retrievers are called that for a reason, it’s instinctive (and what they are bred for 🙄). At the end of the day, yiur dog didn’t touch or, god forbid, slobber over it. So no harm done. Give him a cuddle and a treat and forget about the idiots on here who get far too excited when dogs are mentioned 🙄. Your dog will have forgotten it by now. Labs are awesome 🤩

SunnySideChaos · 30/04/2026 18:48

She didn't want dog slobber on her kids soft toy, I'm not sure she did anything wrong? I'd do the same, so your dog didn't get it in it's mouth, the dog could have quite easily chewed it up given half the chance.

I also laughed at "ddog"/"dlab" too 😆!
