To think that alcohol should also be banned for anyone born after 2008?

Alcohol causes just as much, if not more harm to society as tobacco does. IMO it should be banned as well. Any possibly junk food as well?

OP posts:
Lifeaftershit · Yesterday 07:21

Disagree.
I enjoy drinking alcohol the same way I enjoy eating.

Coffeeandbooks88 · Yesterday 07:27

Maybe people can learn to drink in moderation? Plus I am sure people will still cigarettes one way or another if they really want it.

SailingYachty · Yesterday 07:29

Sure people can drink in moderation. Drinking in moderation is still strongly linked to cancer though and more young people are getting cancer. I think it needs to be made clearer how dangerous alcohol is.

Cats have killed people???

Didn't you grow up watching movies where cats ate their owners?

Or maybe it was just a short lived 90's niche horror genre that my weird friend was into?

sunflowersandsunsets · Yesterday 07:31

Yeah, let’s just ban everything and we can all live our lives in padded rooms with water and bread for sustenance 🙄

ChavsAreReal · Yesterday 07:31

Yanbu. And football.

And junk food. Obviously.

Young people are also drinking less than previous generations did, so maybe they should be drinking more.

Uniaccomm · Yesterday 07:33

5.7% of UK hospital admissions are alcohol related, and it is well-known that rates of live cirrhosis, alcoholic psychosis and infant mortality declined during Prohibition in America.

Banning it would not work of course, but it really can't be painted as a good thing given the above.

By young I mean 30s/40s, I got cancer in my 30s which is pretty young, I’ve always drunk alcohol socially never considering it as risk. But it is a grade one carcinogen.

DuskOPorter · Yesterday 07:38

It is much more likely that the prohibition on drugs will end rather than alcohol getting banned. The younger generation are drinking far less than previous generations but alcohol is not ever going through another prohibition in the western world.

Maaate · Yesterday 07:42

A lot of the youth these days aren't big alcohol drinkers anyway - most seems to be into big stanley cups of protein drinks , skincare and going to the gym.

So the problem may resolve itself anyway

CinnamonJellyBeans · Yesterday 07:42

A lot of us barely drink alcohol, but I'd be sad to see it go.

We do have an functioning alcoholic problem in the UK. Trying to make it "classy" with prosecco and G&T still makes you an alcoholic.

I have done some research and the figures are hard to come by, but I think we have had an explosion of FASD in the UK that is manifesting itself in the behaviour of young people.

Charlenedickens · Yesterday 07:48

Op, you can live in the Middle East, this sort of society exists.

me personally no I don’t want things banned as some abuse them, I’m not up for a nanny state and believe in personal responsibility.

Owly11 · Yesterday 07:51

There's always one person who spoils it for the rest of us.

RupertTheBlackCat · Yesterday 07:51

I've been around a lot of people, both professionally and personally, with addictions. In principle I am very anti drugs but, having seen people addicted to both, I'd far rather someone used weed than drank alcohol. If alcohol was invented today it would immediately be banned.

Do you really think you are omnipotent?!

Do you really know people who think they are omnipotent?!

Do you know what omnipotent means?!

I meant it as a collective rather than individual

MyDeftDuck · Yesterday 07:52

How would that work then OP? Why specifically ban it for anyone born after 2008? And do come back to explain your logic, I’m surely not the only one to be curious about your reasoning.

MyBraveFace · Yesterday 07:55

It wouldn't work because it's relatively easy to brew your own alcoholic drinks, in contrast to growing your own tobacco - in the UK we don't have the climate to grow tobacco plants, but you can knock up some hooch with pretty much any fruit or vegetable matter.

They kill birds and wildlife.

Shall we ban all predatory animals then? Including the Lions and tigers in the jungle? What about the birds who kill and eat insects?

Except that starting on weed is a hell of a slippery slope to much harder drugs like heroin and cocaine. Although my experience is limited to family and friends so I accept that may not be true for everyone.

nutsfornuts · Yesterday 08:02

Well, you’re not wrong, alcohol causes huge amounts of harm. Even people who drink quite moderately are probably increasing their risk of cancer.

I think the personal choice to slightly reduce your life expectancy to enjoy a nice glass of wine with dinner is a personal choice and not one I’d like to remove from people. Just like I wouldn’t advocate for enforced exercise or restricting food for overweight people.

I think where the idea of a ‘ban’ does have more validity is when you look at the broader societal harms which arise from excessive drinking; increase in domestic abuse and violence generally, drink driving, damage to property etc . However, it’s culturally acceptable to drink onto excess and hard to regulate to stop it.

As for banning junk food - define junk food?

FiveFitFoxes · Yesterday 08:02

I do think there needs to be more warnings about alcohol and cancer.

Also unpopular opinion but there should definitely be more warning about processed meat and cancer.

I fail to see how this would be policed. Imagine going into a shop age 26 and being banned from buying fags yet the 29 year old in the queue is allowed. Yes smoking is not good but I have never heard of anyone being killed by a smoking driver, got into a fight through smoking, raped or murdered someone through smoking. Instead of curtailing peoples free will to have a peaceful smoke in their own home, they should be tackling the huge illegal drugs problem we have in this country
