AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

toomuchpressure78 · Today 14:08

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

I’ve thought about having a coffee machine in my room and I only have 2 floors lol hotels have kettles so I say why not?! YOLO

Alouest · Today 17:54

I have a tiny one cup coffee machine, a mini fridge and a kettle in my office. It saves me a lot of time and I'm not worried about exercise. I would say go for it, but research your fridge carefully. Some don't get that cold and some are quite noisy.

Nopersbro · Today 18:14

I can see the argument that they are too bulky/take up too much space/don;t go with the desired "ambience", but with a little creativity it seems likely that you could find a compromise. (I might go with one of those tiny cosmetic tabletop fridges instead of a "dorm" type mini fridge, for example, if it's mainly for milk which you can decant into small containers). Why not give it a try and husband can watch and log any issues and after a reasonable period of time you can discuss again and if it really is detrimental, possibly move either/both into the ensuite or (depending on your layout) into the hallway? (And perhaps take turns making the tea - or if he feels strongly about keeping tea making materials in the kitchen, he could volunteer.)

I am planning to add a ‘wet bar’ fitted into an alcove in my bedroom. Coffee machine, kettle, small sink and fridge along with a few bottles of malt and cognac. Should have done it years ago.

notacooldad · Today 18:48

Do it. Get a toaster too. I do ..I cant i can't be doing all the stairs pre coffee
They may as well stick a microwave in while they are st it!

AndWorseAFemale · Today 18:51

I would worry about damp and mould from the steam from a kettle.

A tassimo or pod coffee machine produces a lot less steam output. i just don't know how good a cup of tea they make because I don't drink it! I suspect they don't get the water hot enough.

Hillarious · Today 18:56

Why stop there? Get a microwave as well!

TirzelyBeloved · Today 19:00

I have both in my room….a mini fridge (although I keep my Botox in it as a singular can of Pepsi). And a small kettle under my desk. When I want some Turkish lemon tea - out it comes

hotchocinsummer · Today 19:03

This is my set up after moving to a 3 floor house, I LOVE IT!
mini kettle, wrapped tea bags and milk pots from Amazon, pushed the boat out and got biscuits too, hotel vibes and I am absolutely not risking sloshing tea up my stair carpet 👍🏼

Hotel rooms have a kettle & fridge & don't look cluttered or get damp.

Get them - & the biscotti.

This is amazing but what do you do on day two when yo've eaten all the biscuits on day 1?! 😆

Totally fair! I would get a little sideboard/cupboard situation to keep all the clutter out the way if it were me, but other than that totally reasonable!

Friends of ours have a Teasmade ( I think they had one as a wedding present many years ago , and replaced it )
We live in a bungalow 😀 much easier

Noseyoldcow · Today 19:16

My grandparents had a Teasmade, and you can still get them. Dunno what they did about the milk, but then their house was mostly freezing. - we are talking before central heating days, and in later life they didn’t get up until after 8am in the winter to save on heating costs - so I daresay a flask did the job in hot weather.

I wouldn't get a kettle I'd get one of those instant hot water things instead.

maxslice · Today 19:21

I’ve always wanted a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom. Could use top of fridge as bedside table.

I’m sorry but thermos flask tea is rank !

Ha, fair enough, I believe you - I only ever do this with a ground coffee brew and with a fancy Japanese thermos that my friend has (I do this when I stay at his place as anyone getting up early to go down to the kitchen wakes the animals and then the children and thus compels the owners/parents to get up).

bangin idea

Ahh man! I’ve just had a throwback memory of when I first got married in 1984…we had a ‘TeasMade’ as a wedding gift! I bloody loved it 😂 Not sure if they’re still a thing…but if so, this might be your solution 😍

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · Today 19:37

Most hotels have a tea tray and kettle so I can't imagine it causes damp. The fridge will make running noise from time to time but you could get a mini drinks fridge that only holds 6 cand and put milk in it. The motor wouldn't be very loud. It would be like a hotel stay every night.

The one cup things are rubbish for tea and make a lot more noise than a kettle!

Blondeshavemorefun · Today 19:56

Well mini blondes has a mini fridge in her room for skin care and drinks
and snacks so why shouldn’t you @toomuchpressure78 for milk and a kettle doesn’t take up much room

you can store Biscuits in the fridge or add a toaster and have marmite toast in bed as well. Heaven !

Reallyneedsaholiday · Today 20:03

Mini fridges can be really noisy and drain electricity. It seems overkill for a drop of milk.

popcornlova · Today 20:04

11 years in the loft here. Sure it’s annoying but Yano what’s more annoying? Carrying everything down the next morning to be washed. I’d leave it alone and drink your tea downstairs
