AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

If you make the tea then it's your call. That said I'd be a bit worried about spillages and such - the area that the tea making happens in would need to be pretty waterproof and easy to clean.

ChaChaChaChanges · Today 14:10

Kettle definitely - and I’d go for one of those teeny desktop fridges for a pint of milk personally - but how about a thermos flask for the milk if you don’t want a fridge?

namechangedforthis21 · Today 14:10

Just go buy the kettle and mini fridge. We have a mini fridge in our room from when dd was a baby and she’s now 13. I couldn’t be without my cold water when I wake up for a drink.

SylvanMoon · Today 14:10

I've never had tea or coffee in bed. How critical to you is this ritual to you? I personally would not like the clutter that will come from having a mini-kitchen in your bedroom. And you're going to have to bring the dirty cups downstairs to wash anyway.

atamlin · Today 14:10

Stop making him tea and let him learn natural consequences? If he’s happy to traipse up and down the stairs every day, let him do it.

PygmyOwl · Today 14:10

I've voted YABU because I agree with DH that I wouldn't like a fridge and kettle in my bedroom. No one is really being unreasonable though - it's just a difference of opinion. Maybe start having your cuppa downstairs rather than in bed?

Like the en suite, for example?

I'd feel more on your partner's side but YANBU. If a fridge and a kettle in the bedroom is going to make you happy, go for it.

Life is too short

Ooh following along because our loft conversion is a spare room mostly used by my DPs when they come to stay for long weekends and visit my DC. I've been thinking about doing the same for them, so they can enjoy a cuppa in peace in bed if they are awake before everyone is getting up.

wombat1a · Today 14:12

Not a chance, I would hate that, so much noise and mess......

Making tea in a bathroom seems quite yuck to me, which I know doesn't make much sense.

LoveWine123 · Today 14:13

If you want one, get one! There are some really cute small ones on Amazon. How much clutter will you be adding? Our bedroom is also in the loft (which I love!) but I never drink tea or coffee in bed. If I did I’d definitely be getting a nice set up for the bedroom.

KeyleftinCar · Today 14:13

I'm genuinely considering getting a Tassimo or such for my bedroom.

My only concern is that a fridge can be pretty noisy and may disturb your sleep. I'd consider a really good flask/metal bottle that keeps stuff cold for 12+ hours. I used one when at a hotel for several weeks for work- I filled it with ice water first then added the milk which stayed cold for about 18 hours.

purplecorkheart · Today 14:16

I probably would not bother with the mini fridge and go with the metal flask idea. I would get a small mini kettle that you could stand on a tile or something similar and when empty keep in a drawer.

Catza · Today 14:17

Kettle is reasonable. Mini fridge - not so much. You can get an insulated flask to pop your milk into in the evening which will be much cheaper and will keep liquids cold for 8+ hours.

FlipARock · Today 14:18

Just do it if it’ll make you happy. My kids have not so mini fridges with a glass door in their rooms and they look really nice.

CupcakeDreams · Today 14:19

Just go do it. Why does he need consulted on such a trivial thing?

MyThreeWords · Today 14:19

How about a thermos flask, filled the night before?

Kettle plus mini-fridge might make a nasty cheap hotel kind of a vibe.

Shinyclean · Today 14:20

Teasmade and take small tray with mugs and small flask with milk up with you when you go to bed.

DramaAlpaca · Today 14:20

I'd do it if I had an attic bedroom. I rely on DH bringing me up a brew most mornings, but I'd love a kettle and a mini fridge. I have a kettle and a mini fridge in my office at work and I love that, saves me trudging up a couple of flights of stairs to the staff kitchen.

ShittyGlitter · Today 14:20

Yes do it! It would be like a hotel room, you can pretend your on holiday 🥳

lola006 · Today 14:21

I put a kettle in my room about 5 years ago and it’s the best thing ever, I highly recommend! I bring my coffee mug upstairs at night (I drink instant coffee) and fill the kettle before bed. DH initially said it sounded silly, but he agrees that it’s fantastic. I have a little set up on a small table.

I couldn’t do a mini fridge due to the noise though.

jackspratswife01 · Today 14:21

Definitely get one like you would in a hotel, lively dressing table or console table with a small kettle 2 lively cups and a few types of tea in a canister, you could make it look lovely, also just use a pretty little flask of milk or buy small long life bottles to use also perhaps get a teammate ?

Elliemayclampett · Today 14:21

Yes! I’ve got a hot water dispenser machine thing in my bedroom. Attached to a smart plug so I can tell Alexa to turn it on.
I’ve got a stash of tea bags and coffee sachets. I get round the milk issue by buying milk sachets from Amazon.
I love it. Perfect for weekend and winter mornings.
Do it. You won’t regret it.

I wouldn’t be keen on keeping a fridge in the same room as a toilet. Or making tea in there for that matter.

OP why don’t you and your DH take it in turns to make the morning tea?
