AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

toomuchpressure78 · 29/04/2026 14:08

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

Could you sleep with a fridge in the room? They are noisy and make the strangest of sounds from time to time. It seems a strange idea to me but then once I’m up and making my morning brew I never ever get back into bed especially with a drink! If that’s your morning ritual though and it’s being hindered and made less enjoyable now, and there are no issues with space or noise or mess or other inconveniences that could be caused by a fridge and kettle in your bedroom then why not. What would you do about cups and spoons and so on? Would you take those up to bed with you each evening or keep a supply of mugs and cutlery?

ETA if you are going ahead with this I’d recommend having one of those combined coffee/tea maker things that boils water in about 15 seconds! Seems less hotel-y than a kettle and maybe more acceptable to the DH?

Kossak · 02/05/2026 19:20

I'd have the tea-making equipment. Go for it. Let's face it, most of us stay in hotel rooms with tea making equipment and a small fridge, and very few of us spill it all over the floor. I don't think I've ever done that!

Does he sleep through the noise it makes?

Yes he does

Obviously, you are right. In fact I'd go as far to say in a loft conversion 2 flights up, it is essential! This is mostly because I have a 2nd floor bedroom and I've thought about this many many times, and now I know my thoughts are right.
And I don't even drink tea in bed! But I would like to!!

chattyness · 02/05/2026 19:37

We've got one of those one cup machines instead of a kettle it sits on a tray on top of the chest of drawers and the drawer immediately below houses tubs of tea bags, sugar, and a wee jar of powdered milk. In Winter time I bring a small jug of real milk but in warm weather it goes off, so I use coffeemate instead. I wouldn't bother with a fridge.
it hasn't made the bedroom damp.

Not a chance, I would hate that, so much noise and mess......

How much noise and mess do you make when you make tea? OP would only be boiling the kettle once in the mornings, and mess is hardly a normal part of the experience.

DownyBirch · 02/05/2026 19:41

Tell your husband if he doesn't want this stuff in the room then making tea every day is down to him from now on.

Teasmade. Had one second hand the minute we got married otherwise I couldn’t get out of bed!
Still have one 46 years on, just invested in a brand new one from Amazon

IME those really are incredibly noisy. OK if you need to be woken up, but not otherwise.

Feis123 · 02/05/2026 19:54

A kettle will add damp but he has no objections to the on-suite?

Avie29 · 02/05/2026 19:59

Once DD is older (she is 2) i am getting a teasmade (alarm goes off and it makes your cup of coffee/tea) only reason i don’t have one now is i worry DD would try get the hot cup.

I've never had tea or coffee in bed. How critical to you is this ritual to you? I personally would not like the clutter that will come from having a mini-kitchen in your bedroom. And you're going to have to bring the dirty cups downstairs to wash anyway.

I have a cup of coffee every morning in bed. One of my simple pleasures.

What about that old classic, a Teasmade ?

I see I’m not the only one to have made that suggestion. 😁

scotvic · 02/05/2026 20:07

You are right, of course! I have a kettle in my bedroom and it has changed my life - so practical. But I can’t be bothered with all
the hassle of milk etc. so I’ve taken to fruit teas - lemon and ginger to wake up, berry tea, camomile etc. to help me sleep.

Oldraver · 02/05/2026 20:07

I would have a kettle or coffee maker but no fridge. I used a type of coffee whitener (from Morrisons a Polish one) which I prefer in coffee

ToffeePennie · 02/05/2026 20:08

We have a 3 story home and I desperately want a mini fridge and kettle in our bedroom, just for cups of tea!!
I haven’t dared approach DH yet.

Well, yes if you’re going to work at 5am the old one spluttered a bit but the new one is very much quieter and of course it has to remind you the tea is at the optimum to pour or ignore.
Living in an area with hard water we use filtered water to reduce the noise too.

I wouldn’t be without it.

If you have to carry 2 cups of tea up 2 flights of stairs, one day you will undoubtedly spill them like i did ( tripped on my own slippers, burning my hands and getting tea on several stairs which are carpeted). Tea in bed in my opinion is essential. Get a mini kettle and a milk flask and enjoy your tea in bed. Open a window if it’s steamy. The only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning is the thought of getting back into it with a cup of tea!!

ForCosyLion · 02/05/2026 20:20

The answer is very obviously a Teasmade!

Chilly80 · 02/05/2026 20:27

Tell your DH he's in charge of making the tea now then

ForCosyLion · 02/05/2026 20:31

I have a mini immersion heater like this one. It goes in a mug and I take it when I travel, so I can always have a cup of tea in the hotel. It's brilliant. You'd only need the teabags and a flask of milk. I know this one is on the American Amazon, but for some reason it's not on Amazon UK but it does have a UK plug included!

The moose of the mini fridge running in the bedroom all night would drive me crazy.

We also don’t eat and rarely drink upstairs, last thing I ever want to have to do is clean up a spillage upstairs. Just sit downstairs with your tea. Like a normal person.

Mitzuko · 02/05/2026 20:39

I'd love it, feels like a hotel treat. Go for it!

Are they quieter these days. I'm half deaf but an old swan tea made I had used to make an unholy racket. Sure it woke the neighbours as well

ElectricLegs · 02/05/2026 22:33

I bought a Goblin Teasmade about 45 years ago. The new Swan version certainly looks better. Mine had a really strident buzzer, but I would be up long before the buzzer went off as the boiling of the water sounded like an eruption of Vesuvius. For some reason the idea of having one now horrifies me. Each to their own though.
