AIBU to want a kettle and mini fridge in our bedroom?

Recently completed a loft conversion, and bedroom is now on the 2nd floor, after 15 years of marital bliss in a 1st floor bedroom. The bedroom is lovely and we finally have an ensuite so no longer have to share a bathroom with 2 DDs and their endless collection of hair bands, unclosed toothpaste tubes, shampoo spillages and the rest.

Only problem is its now 2 flights of stairs down in the morning to make a cuppa, and 2 flights back up again to drink it in bed. We're a week in and I'm over it.

I want to get a kettle and a mini fridge in the bedroom, so tea can be made without dealing with any stairs at all. OH thinks this is unnecessary and will add clutter and damp to the bedroom. But then again, OH only makes the morning tea about once a fortnight and would basically cease to function if I wasn't getting up every day to make the tea.

Who is right?

A teasmade is what you want. Absolutely brilliant invention. Makes the tea to an alarm/ set time, if you weren’t aware. And then no mess (although I do sit mine on a dark coloured mat just in case).

Or if you don’t want that, a kettle but the teasmade is more practical.

I would draw the line at a fridge. Not needed. I just bring up a jug of long life milk each evening- although ordinary milk does last fine till the morning if you’re funny about uht.

You can get really teeny fridges that won’t cause and damp type issues if you really want one, we had one when dd was a baby.

I wouldnt even hesitate. I often peruse Rightmove as a hobby and when I look at those townhouse layouts, my first thought is 'where would I put the tea making equipment in the living room'

There is no way Im traipsing up and down stairs for tea when Im sat in the living room. I will tolerate one flight for the bedroom but nothing more

I'd put milk in a flask each night, put a kettle in there, just like in a hotel room, make a little space for it. I cant live without a cup of tea by the bed or by the sofa.

I guess if it was me I would have thought this through a bit more before the loft conversion- it sounds like you are not really suited to a 3 storey house.

I often smile at the questions asked here. FGS if you want to have morning tea, get a kettle, it's not cocaine in a cup and you're not a toddler! You can use an insulated mug for the milk overnight, and wash the mugs in the en suite sink. What exactly is the problem here? If DH doesn't like it, make him go up and down the millions of stairs every morning with your tea then. Betcha he'll shut up quickly then.

I thought teasmades went out with the ark!

Teasmade and take small tray with mugs and small flask with milk up with you when you go to bed.

This is my preferred option. For what it's worth.

Monty36 · Today 14:27

Put a dressing gown on and go downstairs for your tea.

RoseField1 · Today 14:27

Get a hotel style mini fridge as they are silent. A regular fridge or a tiny drinks fridge will be too noisy.

hahabahbag · Today 14:28

jett is ok but fridges are noisy so I’d just buy a water bottle which keeps cool for 24 hours for the milk or easier still, drink it black (milk hater here Grin)

LostFuse · Today 14:31

Thermoelectric mini fridges are not as noisy as they don't have a compressor.

Likeabirdjoyfully · Today 14:33

Small kettle boiled once or twice a day and a small thermos flask for milk should not make the room damp. Enjoy your cuppa.

ShittyGlitter · Today 14:20

Yes do it! It would be like a hotel room, you can pretend your on holiday 🥳

I agree!

Twasasurprise · Today 14:36

A tray on a small table with a tiny kettle, mugs and small fridge, perhaps underneath the table, is like a hotel setup. I don't see the issue if it works for you. Do you have mains water in the ensuite?

Maddy70 · Today 14:38

The fridge noise will keep you awake. Just take some milk up to bed with you when you go to bed. It'll be fine by morning

outerspacepotato · Today 14:39

Doing stairs is good for you. 😆 I'm with your husband that it's unnecessary clutter in the bedroom.

But.

Why not do a two or three week trial period and see how you like it? I don't see a mini fridge and a kettle causing a decent sized attic room to be damp. It sounds like a lot of people really enjoy this setup.

Happyjoe · Today 14:40

I hate tea in bed, now I've got older. Can't lay in bed because everything aches, need to get up and moving!

Fine over fridge and kettle, but would make the room feel like a hotel? And fridges are rarely quiet when running. Will you be making it with bottled water?

Thistooshallpass. · Today 14:40

I wouldn’t like a kettle and fridge in the bedroom. Also if you have a water softener then the water from the bathroom is not drinking water .
Two flights of stairs is not that much .
However it is your home so if it makes you happy do it .

notacooldad · Today 14:40

Just go do it. Why does he need consulted on such a trivial thing?
It's hardly trivial Even mini fridges can be noisy, take up space and ruin the aesthetic of a room. I'd like to take part in the decision if dh wanted to do something like this.

CandidOP · Today 14:40

Since having a puppy who sleeps in the kitchen and still needing an uninterrupted cup of tea first thing I have installed a really small tray with a travel kettle which sits on a chest of drawers. I take milk up in a flask each night and keep a small container of biscuits and teabags on it. Twenty minutes to lie in bed with a quiet cuppa before the puppy wakes up each morning has saved my sanity.

AltitudeCheck · Today 14:44

I'd get one of those Breville one cup hot water dispensers instead of a kettle as it doesn't steam and less chance of spills. Would take it downstairs to refill and return it upstairs at bedtime.

A little cool bag or flask for the milk as couldn't stand the noise of a fridge in the bedroom.

ChewbaccasMrs · Today 14:44

You can still buy Teasmades OP,I've been thinking of buying one myself and our kitchen is only 1 floor down.

ColdCalmGreen · Today 14:48

When we bought our house, the larger one I would have liked 🤣 had loft conversions incorporating a kitchen area, so more ,like a self contained flat ( no oven ) , it was fabulous.
I would definitely have a sink/ tap fridge area if I had the money to build one, as well as lovely bedroom and separate bathroom.

AirborneElephant · Today 14:51

Kettle yes. But fridge absolutely not. I’m very sensitive to noise at night and turn off any fridge in every hotel room I stay in!

TeaDrinkings · Today 14:52

My username will tell you all you need to know!!
I love the idea!
I remember Teasmade back in the day. A little set up that even had a timer and you could wake up to a fresh brew.
I have a small cosmetics fridge for my creams and face spritz. You could get one of those.
Make yourself a little tea/coffee station like in hotels.

LittleGreenDragons · Today 14:54

Either you get the kettle/thermos (fridges are noisy) OR
He makes it and brings it up OR
You just make your own and drink it on the sofa with a heated snuggly throw. He dies of thirst.

The person not making it doesn't get the veto.
